Shep has been around since the network started in 1996. I'm thinking that he owns quite a bit of stock in the company and has more clout than many of the others at the network. I know he doesn't seem to be bound by the same rules that the others are and is more inclined to speak his mind without repercussions. It seems as if Hannity, Beck, Ingraham, etc, know that their role is to oppose the Obama WH at every turn.

Nope: his news program is by far the most successful on Fox, even more so than the opinions, and gets more viewers than any other cable news broadcast. He's a cash cow, so I think Murdoch lets him do what he wants.

It's not just brains - Napolitano is a (dangerously) smart guy, as is Karl Rove. Megyn Kelly is also pretty smart, albeit shameless.

It's about journalistic integrity, and Shep Smith is the only one that has any at all (and, in fact, he's quite a good journalist by any networks' standards, let alone Fox).

Napolitano mixes the bright with the bogus. He said the government wouldn't let BP drill in 500 feet "where they could have contained the spill easily". Not true. In '79 they couldn't contain a spill in 200 feet of Gulf water, and their containment/clean-up capacity is no better now.

Then he gave a compelling private sector argument against any liability cap at all for oil companies.

There is also the fact that the known shallow water oil fields in the Gulf are well known and being exploited.

In order to find more oil they are drilling in deeper water in order to tap new or potential fields.

This picture is a little large but; you will be able to see the shallow water wells already in place.

Whether this judge guy and the bimbo Kelly and the degenerate Rove are "smart" is a topic for discussion, but has nothing to do with this, and I do agree with you that being smart does not guarantee integrity. What's clear is that when put on the defensive, the judge's argument was all over the planet and impossible to follow. It was MMS's fault for providing bad data/information. It was the liability cap's fault. It was the environmentalist's fault for making BP drill in deep water. And by the way, you jerk, severe damage to the environment cannot be rectified with dollars alone. I'll bet he believes that if the disastrous consequences of man influenced climate change come to bear, we'll just solve it by suing the "risk-takers".

Even here Shep was kinda weak,

When Neapolitan says stuff like "the environmentalists wanted them to drill in 5,000 feet of water, Gov. Jindal wanted to drill in 500 feet of water." This is probably absolute bunk. Another flat-out lie.

Shep didn't even call him on it.

It is bunk. Oil companies drill where their geologists tell them they are most likely to hit oil. They don't usually just drop a well willy-nilly. These oil companies have been wanting to get to the deep water reservoirs for YEARS. They know how big the reservoirs are.

The find in the Gulf might be the second largest discovery in the WORLD! Of course they have been licking their chops for years to get down there. Moreover, I think it would be interesting under whose administration oil companies were not required to have insurance under? Who signed the law that put the caps on liability? I can make one guess. . . Interesting that that Judge doesn't bother to mention that information. Nor does he mention under whose administration the MMS went from being a governmental agency to a complete joke. Hhmmmmm . . .

Shep is badass. That guy doesn't take sh*t from anyone. He just looks at someone straight in the face and tells them how it is. They can either hate it or love it, and he'll say it anyway. He almost has the demeanor of someone who's literally saying "come get some".

Sure Napolitano, sue the oil companies, they drag it out in court for twenty years and then wait for the Supreme court to let them off the hook for paying as per the Valdez decision..

And what is truly disgusting and sad is that if the people who were harmed by this spill did have to sue BP the idiots on Fox would be calling them greedy and accusing them of not wanting to work but just wanted a bail out from BP. This 20 billion is a better deal for BP than it is for those who are dealing with their spill. It will probably take much more than the 20 billion to fix this mess. If the people did sue, they would probably have to hand out much, much more than 20 billion.

Though Shep should have gone much further in criticizing Napolitano, it's still a million times better than the drivel that almost always comes from Fox.

The argument that an insurance company would never have let BP drill there is so laughable, given recent events.

The only thing that would have happened is that the insurance company would have defaulted or found a loophole not to pay.

Issue number 2: Did the government screw up by kissing up to the oil companies and ignoring warning signs for so long? Yes

Take care of issue number 1, and when done, go on to issue number 2 not the other way around.

Thank God for Shep! He is the only person on Fox Spews that is decent and stands up for truth. This is pretty cool that Shep is taking up for government. About time we hear the truth. He'll probably be fired soon.
It's funny when these weasels talk about the government like it's a bad thing. You know when they say government, what they really mean is that marxist, communist muslim in the White House. They act like Obama is the one who lifted restrictions on how and where the oil companies can drill. Bush is the one who allowed this to happen and maybe Obama should have looked at the problems BP was having but not fixing. But what the right wing wooses need to realize is Obama has a full plate trying to fix the mess he was elected into. And in my opinion he is doing a pretty good job. Thank God Obama has class and doesn't stoop to the level of these evil, hateful, disgusting, worthless, ridiculous right wing nutjobs.

Shephard Smith is sprobably as well liked at Fox as is anyone else. I once saw Martha McCallum stare at him with a teenie bopper stare that was hard to misconstrue. My guess is that Smith is BMOC (Big Man on Campus) at Fox.

At Fox, as with all networks, it's about the number of viewers, and Murdoch will hire anyone that can bring in viewers. The difference with Fox, though, is that Murdoch and Ailes are willing to to toss journalistic standards aside to max their viewership. Each does it for his own reason. Murdoch is an Australian that was raised on (and built his empire on) the trashy publications that are so popular in the British dominion. Ailes is simply a Nixon era partisan who was raised on the politics of Dirty Tricks. And, he absolutely hates liberals - as did Nixon.

One instance of Shep standing (somewhat) against the rediculousnes of Fox News does not exonerate Shep from his contributions to the Fox News problem. Shep's OCCASIONAL disagreements with his colleagues spin can and is used as "evidence" of Fox's balance.

If he values his journalistic integrity, his ONLY face saving choice is to simply walk away from the lying, GOPbP propagandist network that he lends "credibility" to. Shep is guilty of participating in the Fox News Charade until he doesnt.
