Read Dr. Schlessinger's apology here:

These are my opening comments from my radio program today:

I talk every day about doing the right thing.  And yesterday, I did the wrong thing.

I didn't intend to hurt people, but I did.  And that makes it the wrong thing to have done.

I was attempting to make a philosophical point, and I articulated the "n" word all the way out - more than one time.  And that was wrong.  I'll say it again - that was wrong.

I ended up, I'm sure, with many of you losing the point I was trying to make, because you were shocked by the fact that I said the word.  I, myself, realized I had made a horrible mistake, and was so upset I could not finish the show.  I pulled myself off the air at the end of the hour.  I had to finish the hour, because 20 minutes of dead air doesn't work.  I am very sorry.  And it just won't happen again.

I received some letters, and what touched me is that, even though many of you were upset, you still showed friendship for all the years we've been together on the air, and for that, trust me, I am very grateful.  Here's an example:

I'd like to thank this woman for sending me this letter.  I was so very touched, and truthfully, it helped me make it through the night.  So I'm going to read this letter:

Dear Dr. Laura:

I have been a listener for at least 20 years.  I have bought and read several of your books.  I have always held you in high regard, and have encouraged others to listen to you as well.  I have to say, after today's call with the African-American woman with the Caucasian husband who called seeking how to handle "racist" comments, I am a bit dismayed.  I believe that African-Americans using the n-word is disdainful, as well as Caucasians or any other race for that matter.  I agree that the argument some African-Americans use that it is ok for them to use it and not others, is ridiculous.  But, I have to say, when I heard you saying the word repeatedly, it struck a negative chord with me.

I don't believe you are a racist, and I don't believe, as an African-American woman, that I am hypersensitive.  I have to say after the call, I found it difficult to continue to listen to the rest of the show.  I have not made the decision to stop listening to your show, but I felt compelled to respond because I found it offensive.

Sincerely {and she gives her name}

One last note -
The caller in question (her name is Jade), called for help from me, and didn't get it, because we got embroiled in the "n" word, and I'm really sorry about that, because I'm here for only one reason and that's to be helpful, so I hope Jade or somebody who knows her is listening, and hope she will call me back and I will try my best to be helpful, which is what she wanted from me in the first place and what she did not get.

sorry Laura the election of one Black man vited as president doesnt erase the long history of racism and segregation and slavery that is this country's history, nor does it erase the hatred that some whites have toward blacks and the hatred that some blacks have toward whites and as far as the N-word is concerned it was used against black people as a derogatory term meant to degrade, dehumanize blacks..which in term led some in the hip-hop community to make an attemptp to somehow deflate the word and turn it on its head, which in my opinion i dont like the use of the word either way.

This woman is a doctor? Is she really so blindingly stupid to her own actions that she thinks she can get away with saying the N word because she isn't calling a specific person that word? So I guess Dr. Schlessinger is fine if we call her a raging C word; she shouldn't be over-sensitive about it. Have a sense of humor about it.

If memory serves, her doctorate is in English. Calling her "doctor" is designed to imply she's something of an expert and qualified to "council" people. It's really rather pathetic.

At least when Stephen Colbert does his doctor segments on his show, he notes that he has a DFA, and he could teach Dr. Laura about having a sense of humor.

It would seem I stand corrected. Her doctorate is in physiology. Someone pointed this out on another thread. So, naturally I checked into it, and they are right. My apologies. I was simply going from memory. : |

Actually she has a Ph.D. in physiology but sells her herself as a psychologist. She is a foul and suspicious shrew. Jade is a sad individual because she obviously strives to be color blind but is constantly reminded that no matter how much she assimilates she is a "they" not an "us". Turning to someone like this harridan speaks volumes about how naive she is as a black woman.

You're right. I am sorry for the mistake. : ( For some reason I had it in my mind that she had a doctorate in English. I was wrong. What can I say? I'm human. ::shrug:: Thanks for setting the record straight though. : )

At any rate, I agree with your thoughts completely! I've never had any tolerance for this woman. I feel very sorry for Jade. I feel even worse for her going through the hell of Laura. As for the "apology," I'm afraid it just doesn't make up for her words. The shrew should be fired without question.

I believe you may have been confused if you have ever watched 'the West Wing.' There was an episode, 'the midterms' where they did a spoof of Schlessinger calling her 'Dr Jacobs' When 'the president' asks her what her doctorate is in, she states 'english lit.'

              BARTLET
Forgive me, Dr. Jacobs. Are you an M.D.?

I'm asking, 'cause on your show, people call in for advice and you go by the name of Dr. Jacobs on your show. And I didn't know if maybe your listeners were confused by that, and assumed you had advanced training in Psychology,Theology, or health care.
                JENNA JACOBS
I don't believe they are confused, no sir.
                BARTLET
Good. I like your show. I like how you call homosexuality an abomination.
                JENNA JACOBS
I don't say homosexuality is an abomination, Mr. President. The Bible does.
                BARTLET
                Yes, it does. Leviticus.

                18:22
                BARTLET
Chapter and verse. I wanted to ask you a couple of questions while I had you here. I'm interested in selling my youngest daughter into slavery as sanctioned in Exodus 21:7. (small chuckles from the guests) She's a Georgetown sophomore, speaks fluent Italian, and always clears the table when it was her turn. What would a good price for her be? While thinking about that, can I ask another? My Chief of Staff, LeoO McGarry, insists on working on the Sabbath, Exodus 35:2, clearly says he should be put to death. Am I morally obligated to kill him myself or is it okay to call the police? Here's one that's really important, 'cause we've got a lot of sports fans in this town. Touching the skin of a dead pig makes us unclean, Leviticus 11:7. If they promise to wear gloves, can the Washington Redskins still play football? Can Notre Dame? Can West Point? Does the whole town really have to be together to stone my brother, John, for planting different crops side by side? Can I burn my mother in a small family gathering for wearing garments made from two different threads? Jenna Jacobs fidgets uncomfortably.
                BARTLET
Think about those questions, would you? One last thing, while you may be mistaking this for your monthly meeting of the Ignorant Tightass Club, in this building, when the President stands, nobody sits.Jenna Jacobs squirms in her seat but doesn't rise. Bartlet glares meaningfully at her.
She finally rises out of her seat.
                BARTLET
                Toby.
                TOBY
                Yes, Mr. President.

"And what I just heard from Jade is what I hear from black think, and it's distressing and disturbing."

Yeah, who could possibly think she's racist?

The issue isn't that she said the n-word; the big issue is that she completely ignored Jade's (totally reasonable and respectfully stated) points, treated Jade like a child, patronizingly called her an angry black woman, taunted her with repeating the n-word over and over, and has the audacity to claim that it's "hypersensitivity inflamed by black leaders" that's at the root of racism.

Throw her a** off the air. What a disgrace.

I guess it was stupid to think that since we have the first black prez who was voted in for the most part by whites, that this would change. Maybe if the prez himself were interested in it, but he doesn't seem to address it much.
"Not voted in by white older people", Jade says. Not true. The Obama bumper stickers weren't on the young kids' cars, they were on the minivans and SUV's of white yuppies and baby boomers.

Do they not realize their words are cataloged daily? There aren't an abundance of her words decrying "WHITE THINK" and how "disturbing" it all is.

But here we have her being "disturbed" by what she calls "BLACK THINK"

Your idea of racist and my idea of racist seem to be 2 very different things.
Yes. Bintx has the correct idea, and you have the wrong one. Thanks for finally noticing.

In reference to what "Dr." Laura called "black think", you said this:
Not so funny, because I know what she's talking about.

Are you going to share your profound insight with us, or what?

And so it begins. Now that the word has been used, I predict that many in the blogosphere that panders to the right wing extremists will start using it, regularly, and of course escalating beyond the word.

They will have started the "race" war, and will try to claim that they had nothing to do with it.

To believe that after 46 years racism does not exist is just as foolish to believe a god exist. There are still white people that hate blacks, and what is common in my town is white's hating brown people. so yes there is still racism, my best friend who is Indian (Indians are from India, and to think that Native American's are Indian's is also racist), gets called a dot head all the time from white people. So I see racism and hear racism all the time.

Great. It's been said. Rush has been just waiting to say it. Will his show tomorrow be one long N-word rant with the excuse of "discussing" the topic and of course "satire" and "tweaking the media"?

It seemed to me that Dr. Laura really got a jolly out of saying that word over and over again and convinced herself that she had enough political cover and excuse to say it.

Wow!! I have always disliked this blowhard! But way to go out with a bang! Once.. Well, maybe just bad taste and ignorance, Twice.. wait a second, Did she just... But I counted over 10x, add the rest of the silly explanation and she is done..

In a few minutes the local Racist "shock jock" will start his morning show.. and I am not kidding when I say that he make RushHole look sane, will think he can FINALLY say what he has been dying to say... So he will .. Over and over.. I may record it but here in Idaho.. NOBODY will care.. well maybe like 6 of us.

I hope this ends Dr.(LOL)Laura but I think we all know it is just beginning, The Racist have come out from the shadows into the light and we all see that they are more numerous than we thought, they feel comfortable in mass, they don't even think they are Racist..
I hope the next Generations are watching and learning, I know we can be better then this.

"The caller in question (her name is Jade), called for help from me, and didn't get it, because we got embroiled in the "n" word, and I'm really sorry about that, because I'm here for only one reason and that's to be helpful, so I hope Jade or somebody who knows her is listening, and hope she will call me back and I will try my best to be helpful, which is what she wanted from me in the first place and what she did not get" A quote from "Dr". Schlessinger.
Oh you were "helpful" alright; you told the woman she was "hypersensitive" and suggested "she shouldn't marry outside of her race".
My question to you Dr Schlessinger, would you have been that insensitive and combative to a white caller with the same concerns? Which is what is required of a Doctor.
Or would you have conducted yourself with professionalism and compassion?
You gave absolutely no regard to this woman and her concern. You are only a "doctor" when it is convenient, otherwise you are no different than the white people who come to you for advice and solutions.
You are wrong in so many ways and you are in need of education and knowledge. REAL education and knowledge, not the kind of education you uses to pacify confused people.

You see how this so-called Doctor automatically over-looked the actions of the black woman's white husband and focused on the black woman herself?
Husbands are required to protect their wife's honor. He should have told his family and friends to respect his wife, but he didn't do anything, so this woman has a right to be resentful of her husband. But this is of no concern to this so-called Doctor.
She than wanted to convinced this black caller to believe she has no right to be offended, even though she told the "Doctor" how she felt.
White people have a problem with black people holding anything against them, no matter what whites do to us to us. Remember the Sharoal (forgive the spelling) "scandal" and what she said about not helping a white farmer? This is what whites had a problem with.
Although she had a compelling reason to be vindictive against white people (her father was killed by a white man who escaped justice), no white commentator wanted to explore the possibility that this black woman was within her right to be bitter toward those who benefited from an unjust society, at the expense of her own people.
Black public officials and black people in general are not supposed to be angry when whites do wrong against us. We are supposed to suck it up and let it go.
But that is not how white society behaves when blacks victimize white people. No, they are vengeful and they will make an example of you. Not only that, they NEVER forget ie O J Simpson.
This Doctor is no different than other infidels like Hannity, Limbaugh, O'Racist, Republicans and conservatives who constantly spew stupidity and hate over the airwaves.

This Black woman called about her white husband and why she is resentful of him, but the Doctor gives him a pass and focus on the black woman. According to the doctor the husband bare no responsibility for his wife resentful fellings. I really don't believe the doctor would appreciate her husband look the other way while people insult her in his presence. So it is clear race is an issue with this so-called doctor.
This black woman should get rid of this piece of sh@t because he is nither a man or a husband.
A man would not put his love one in that kind of position more than once and a husband would protect the honor of his wife. If your husband doesn't stand up for you, he doesn't really value you.
To all my sisters; you NEED to be with someone you have something in common with and someone who sees you as their equal.
Even though this man married a black woman, his friends means more to him than his wife.
This "Doctor" should not be giving out advice to concerned people if she can't put her personal beliefs aside.

If that's true she should get another profession because her advice may be worthless.

She never let Jade explain what was being said to give an answer. Soon as she started to, Laura jumped in with a comment and the rest is history. If you're gonna ask the caller to give you 2 examples, let them give you the examples and then give your opinion. And just because Pres Obama was elected President didn't mean all racism in America would cease to exist. That's the dumbest thing in the world. Honestly, it's only gotten worse because some white people can't stand the fact that he is the President...ala Limpballs, Klannity, Buck, and practically everyone on Fixed News, to name a few.
