I wish someone would have the courage to set Newt Gingrich on fire.

Not surprised that Newt sees these 2 things as equivalent when they're really not at all.

Exactly. How precisely does building an Islamic center near Ground Zero risk American lives in Afghanistan?

Protesting the Islamic center near Ground Zero risks American lives. That is how they are similar.

Yup, idiots like Newt have themselves all confused. It would make a lot more sense to say that Newt should have the same gradual journey towards common sense, or a "commitment to America", and get over his religious bigotry.

Park 51 = some people planning to build a community center on their property in NY.

KOran BUrners = some people demonstrating their religious bigotry and trying to fan the flames of fear and hate.

Park 51 Opponents = some people demonstrating their religious bigotry and trying to fan the flames of fear and hate.

Somehow, a lot of people in the third group have made themselves experts at comparing and advising the first two groups.

I think Newtie is still mad that he had to ride in the back of airforce 1 during the Clinton presidency.

Thus, holding grudges and being mad = Fox commentator qualifications, full of lots of advise and a compacted colon.

I appreciate the very practical point you're making, about the inherent TANGIBLE differecnes... but we needn't go that far.

One is right, one is wrong. Period.

Building a Mosque? Morally RIGHT. How do I know? Simple: Just ask a Christian how they would feel about building a CHURCH and then treat the two equally, as required by our Constitution. (Which I hold as inherently good.)

Burning the Koran? Morally WRONG. How do I know? Simple: Just ask a Christian how they would feel about burning the BIBLE and treat them equally, as required by our Constitution. (Which I hold as inherently good.)

It is my greatest belief, the one I hold most sacred, that their is no greater sin than hypocrisy. If something is "good" for you, than it's good for them. And if it's "bad" for them, then it's bad for you. Done. Period. End of story.

The position of the Book-Burners is indefensible. The position of teh Mosque protester is likewise indefensible. The inherent hypocrisy of both group undermines any argument they make.

The tangible consequences are thus immaterial.

I'll pile on too, Eddie, because I should have scrolled down and seen that you said it much better than I did.

I'd also recommend a thorough reading of your post to all of the wingnuts who find themselves constantly writing " Liberal Hypocrisy !" here, directed at issues where there's a disagreement between two liberals, or a different reaction to very different circumstances.

I've been trying to help several of them with understanding what the words " hypocrisy" and "hypocrite" mean..

This, as Eddie points out clearly, is what genuine hypocrisy looks like.

I'm sorry, the risk to Coalition troops in Afghanistan and Muslim popular opinion worldwide is immaterial? The tangible consequences are the strongest bit of leverage we've got against an opposition that refuses to listen to reason. Remember who you're dealing with: tangibility is the only language that has a hope of getting to them.

How could anyone expect anything else? Jones makes sh!t up about having an agreement to move the mosque and tentatively calls off his burning, while Rauf stands by his convictions in the face of adversity. Who else but a guy who abandoned his dying wife in the hospital so he could be with his girlfriend would have a vision of courage in which Rauf should emulate Jones?

this is the right's favorite false equivalency of the moment. Comparing apples to oranges is their stock in trade, and they are ALL jumping on this bandwagon, saying that building what amounts to a Muslim "YMCA" with a prayer room is the same as burning the holy book of nearly 2 billion people.

        credibility? Not so much...

They just continue to legitimize his crazy ideas, pushing themselves further off the cliff everyday. I have never cared for Gingrich but he really makes my skin crawl now. He is a complete opportunist with absolutely no moral compass whatsoever. That is not someone you want as a leader.

Oh, and if you had a commitment to America, you wouldn't have made that stupid, offensive video which uses footage of the horrible events of 9-11. You're a jerk . . . always have been, always will be. Just go find another girlfriend . . . I'm thinking it's about time.

Wouldn't this argument of false equivalency make more sense if the pastor were proposing to build a shopping mall with a drive-in Evangelical church?

How in the world is burning a holy book the same as building a community center?

        It's not the same.

This is the talking point, the distraction. They've planted the "Other" seed that Obama is a Muslim and now, it is full throttle ISLAMOPHOBIA! They have NOTHING to offer the United States in the way of solutions, so they resort to character assassination and fearmongering.

In this case, their stupidity may result in the loss of American lives. These faux conservatives don't care as long as their "team" wins.

It's funny. I hear Rauf talking about moderates not letting the extremists on either side take over but where are the moderates on the anti-Park51 side? Seems like all we are hearing is extremism from those who oppose it. I really don't value Gingrich's opinion on what it means to love America.

One doesn't have to take an "equally big step back" when he is in the right.

What we need is for people like Gingrich, Palin, Beck, Limbaugh, etc to take a huge step away from creating and promoting conspiracies meant to benefit them politically and financially that hurt the country at the national and international levels.
