Making jokes is unpresidential, unless they're hilarious ones about how he can't find weapons of mass destruction after insisting they were there and getting thousands of soldiers killed.

I didn't think the speech was brilliant or inspiring, but that's because I've been a politics addict for thirty years and I've grown rather jaded when it comes to speeches in general. I'm inspired by actual programs and people who risk their political futures to do what they think is right. If the President and his party proceed to do this in the coming months, I'll be inspired.

        Words? Not so much.

I thought it was decent as far as SOTU speeches go. They are always high on rhetoric and short on detail. I didn't care for the seating thing, found it really affected the President's speaking style and I think without the applause, it made for a bit of a flat delivery. Obama, like most speakers, feeds off his audience and his audience was pretty boring.

I did, however, watch the FOX coverage of the speech. I watched the reaction of the "random" people that they pulled in to watch and analyze the speech. Frank Luntz, Mr. "no-bias" reporting. Anyone else catch that? That was pretty funny. I swear they gave nasty pills out to 95% of those folks. Mean defined.

I sort of calibrate my ears and my brain for these speeches. Platitudes and generalities are expected, and sometimes I think Obama has to be more careful than most. In my lifetime, there hasn't been a president with such a deranged and dishonest opposition, waiting to misinterpret everything he says, and even things he doesn't say.

Even listening with that filter on, the Republican rebuttal ( Ryan, I believe) made the president's speech shine in comparison. I drifted off after a few minutes of undefined rambling about spending cuts and erotic whispers about the constitution.

Far too many white folks got it twisted: The State of the Union speech by the President is not about entertainment, no, speeches are about content, substance, solution and vision.
George W. Bush was a buffoon. He gave entertaining speeches for all the wrong reasons, mostly by accident. This is what you get from a clown who could care less about being serious.
The worse thing about Bush's comedy routine, other than a lack of substance and lies, it was acceptable behavior from the leader of the free world".
When I listen to a speech, I pay more attention to what is said than how it is said. I don't need someone who talks loud and says nothing. The speech the President gave was a great speech. I don't need anyone to tell me otherwise, especially when I saw it for myself.
Fox News is childish and their audience is immature. That would explain why Fox News makes a mockery of intelligence.

Another great post from mano! Only thing is mano appears to exhibit a bit of racism against "white folks". Then he claims Fox news is "childish, immature, and unintelligent" - while he completely missed the fact it was Obama who attempted some humor by cutting a couple stupid jokes - of which he completely bombed - again while mano is saying the SOTU is "not about entertainment, no, speeches are about content, substance, solution and vision."

Then, as all good Obama followers (lemmings) always do, sez BHO gave a great speech because mano saw it for himself.

Memo to democrats: You can go ahead and keep mano on your side. We don't want his type on our side. We want folks who possess some decent thinking skills and judge people by the content of their character - not by the color of their skin.

          to onementalgiant.
Thanks for the "great post" complement.
Somehow you believe I "exhibit a bit of racism against white folks". What give you that impression? Is it because I used the term "white folks"?. Would you feel better if I said white people instead?
"Racism" would suggest I have power to control a group of people. I do not.
"Racism" also would suggest I hate a group of people due to their skin color. I do not because it is silly to hate someone for something they can't control. I'm black and some people hate me because of it. That is stupid. I have better sense than that.
So you are wrong on both counts.
Just so you know, I stick by the fact that Fox News is "childish, immature" when it comes to this President.
It is true that Obama has a sense of humor and he displayed some of it during his speech, but the overall speech was serious and informative. Can you deny that? Who doesn't throw in a joke or two during a speech?
It doesn't matter what this President does Fox News will criticize, attack, undermine and mock him, and they have been consistent. This IS childish, especially if you claim to be "News".
You are as twisted as those I point out.
You say I am a "good Obama follower". What if I told you I am a bad Obama follower. Would that make any different? The fact is I still appreciate intelligent speeches and speakers.
When I say it was a good speech, I am speaking for myself. If you said it was a bad speech, would you be speaking for every moron in America? No, you would be speaking for yourself. Just so you know, I don't have to be a Democrat to appreciate a good speech (or speaker). It makes no difference to me.
I will always be on the side of good and righterousness. This could exclude me from both Parties, but I can tell you this: Today's Republicans are the epitome and personification of evil and destruction (self). They are on the wrong side of every issue that is good for the American people (other than the rich).
If that is the side you want to be on than we need to question your intelligence, or should I say, lack of.

This is what the far right often does...instead of examining facts first, then drawing a conclusion, they draw their conclusion first, then make up their own "facts" that legitimize their conclusions.

The conclusion was made first, before the speech even happened, that the President sucked. Muting the applause and laughter was a way to change the facts so they fit their narrative and conclusion. I'm sure thats not an original theory, but bear with me..I'm kinda new at this. lol

The problems haven't started yet in Washington, when the Speaker of the House and the New unqualified Tea Party members get together the USA is going to be in big trouble. Fox News will go down with Beck, when the right person gets killed or threatened it's going to be Hell to pay for Fox. Every one ever threatened should file Police reports and Law Suits against Fox and Beck.

I just had to create an account so I could get on here and ask just what rock did you people crawl out from under? You would know that Fox is fair and balanced if you watched regularly and watched the entire show instead of believing what you are told to believe !!You are entitled to your opinion of course, just as am I ,however I do research about something before I comment on it!!

Wait, wait... I heard the speech, I heard the laughter. People thought this was very funny. Isn't this like James O'Keefe and the fake pimp/ACORN videos? Fox played O'Keefe's videos like they were real. I guess they decided to cut out the middleman and started to manufacture their own cinematic lies. Great stuff for a news show.

Fox and friends is just a morning show, just like Good Morning America is. It was just satire on FAF, as are a lot of segments they've done the past. If you people don't like it, then watch something else - and learn to change your own diaper.

Wow, are all you guys actually dumb enough to believe that these clips are real? No wonder America is going down the drain. I actually watched this clip live. Guess what? NO CRICKETS!!!

Is this really any worse than when Bush was in the office. I seem to remember all of you guys calling him stupid and dumb even though he was an educated man. Yet when somebody of questionable character enters the office, were not allowed to say anything? What a double standard you Libs are!

Actually, Fox edited this clip. Which is OK for comedy purposes but not OK to report it as actual news! Here is the original clip. His jokes were a success:
