The mere thought that the vast majority of humanity, including your loved ones, are going to fry in Hell for all eternity, should bring a smile to your face and put a spring in your step.

The people who believe in Hell are the ones who are certain they are not going there. I almost wish there was one and I could get to see the look on their faces when they are the ones sent sent there.

Is there some sort of correlation between atheism and depression? I'm an atheist and since I think this world is all we have, I intend to live my life to the absolute fullest; my future is full of bright, happy days. =)

What I found most amazing about the study was the revelation that only atheists suffer from depression.

What? You mean that wasn't revealed? But, wait a minute....Pat My-Eyes-No-Longer-Open Robertson just implied that people suffer from depression because they don't believe in god.

I wonder, how does Pat explain depression in people who also have strong faith?

This is the same thinking that you can "pray away the (fill in the blank)". Look, when you get an infection, you take antibiotics. When you have diabetes, you take insulin. When you have surgery, you are given anesthesia. When you have a headache, you take Motrin or Tylenol. You cannot "pray away the pain" when someone is cutting into your chest for open-heart surgery.

And when depression is a diagnosis (as opposed to a temporary conditional sadness) you are prescribed anti-depressants.

God gave us brains and expects us to use them. So when you make idiotic comments like this, "Reverend", you are not fulfilling your commitment to honor God.

Well, you can pray away everything or can you? One guy says that he would believe in prayer if I can pray back a severed limb. I want to see someone who has had an arm amputated pray to have it back--then I will believe. I have had athlete's foot, and I haven't been able to pray it away. I have gray hair and it is still here after prayer. How much do I have to pray? Does God not get it after 1 time, or is it like advertising, and He needs more than one exposure? What about praying for someone else? Can I pray and have someone else cured. My uncle has been dead, can I pray him back to life?

What about the Buddhist version (SGI, Soka Gakkai International) that believes in chanting instead of prayer? Do I have to chant and pray. Damme, Pat, this is confusing. Help me out here.

Nothing fixes your depression like having someone tell you that you were born wrong to begin with and the only way to get better is to be a sheep in service to a nonexistent god/s.

Or maybe the problem is that people aren't getting access to proper mental health professionals and Dr. find it cheap and easier to just put pills in their patients hands.

No Pat must be right it's a lack of fairy tails and magic making people depressed. I mean really everyone likes a good magic show.

Depression is a organic disorder of the brain. It has nothing to do with not believing in God, etc. It can be exacerbated by external things, but it is a disease process.

RiffRabbit, I was driving to work one morning and saw a sign outside a church that said "We're too blessed to be depressed." As soon as I got to my office, I called the church and left a message telling them how uneducated and hurtful that sign was. I told them that anyone driving by who was suffering from depression would be horribly hurt by it. Then, I asked if they would put "We're too blessed to have heart disease" or "We're too blessed to have diabetes" on their sign. When I drove home that afternoon, the sign had been changed.

Just dumb. I don't suffer from depression, but I have a chronic pain condition which was treated with anti-depressants because chronic pain and depression go hand in hand . . . wasn't a pleasant time for me.

Hoping you're getting the care you need. It's cruddy feeling cruddy.

It is time for old Pat to retire. Watched him interview Joel Rosenberg on his fiction book The Tehran Initiative the other day and try to link it to Obama. Believing that this work of fiction is based in reality is directly comparable to those who believe there is truth in Dan Brown's DaVinci Code. Seriously, Pat, your line between fiction and reality are getting blurred.

I am a firm believer in the Gospel of Grace. I also take anti-depressants. Originally they were prescribed when i was going through a hard time with my teenage son. That has passed as do all hard times but I stayed on my medication. See, I found another advantage to taking my citalopram...FOCUS. I am one of those people who can be doing something and my mind is on something completely different. I can be reading a book and get to the bottom of the page and realize that I have not retained a single thing because my mind was elsewhere. I have found that this is not such an issue on my medication so decided that for a mere $4/month it was beneficial to my job and life. They do not get me "stoned" as Mr. Robertson said this morning. He needs to do some real research.

Another thing...With all the "doomsday" and "the Muslims are coming to get us" talk that goes on at the 700 Club is it any wonder people are depressed? Maybe Robertson and his clan are directly responsible for some of the depression running "rampant" in the USA. What happened to the protection of the believers of Christ? Haven't heard him speak of this recently.

Really, this doddering old fool needs to quit living in his glory days of when "he was running for president" (of which he endlessly loves to remind his listeners) and decide whether he is a preacher or a politician. As a believer, I find it not possible to be both. The Lord is so much higher than man's politics and if a preacher is teaching about the gifts bestowed upon us through the sacrifice he would only be lowering his position to get caught up in the hateful game of society's politics.

These comments are simply ignorant.Millions of Americans are prescribed anti-depressants by their physicians to treat a variety of legitimate illnesses(a large number of which are biologically based). These drugs DON'T get people stoned. Typically they work to correct chemical imbalances in the brain that are physical in nature. This statement is equivalent to saying that hypertension is caused by a lack of faith in God & taking medication to treat it is morally wrong.
