I hate to sound like a negative nellie, but history has shown that scandals that dont involve death or rape tend to have a short lifespan. Those involved will have alot of upfront scrutiny, but the story will fade into history when the next earthquake hits or the next government shutdown looms. The media conservative or liberal has A D D and will soon figure this to be old news no one cares about.

Whether it fades into history or not is irrelevant. If those at News Corporation* did wrong, then they should be prosecuted for their actions. The "court of public opinion" is unimportant in this case.

        * If any phrase can sum up what is wrong with the news, it is "News Corporation". News should not be subject to the whims of corporate profits.

        BDA,

I tend to agree with you for the most part but for some different reasons as well. Mainly, scandals like this that happen to incredibly wealthy and well connected corporations and individuals who are tied to the very center of the political and financial power structure tend to meet a proverbial brick walls of lawyers, legislators, judicial allies, delays, mysterious deaths, and changes to the very laws that put them under scrutiny in the first place.

I too share your pessimism. We've been sliding toward classic fascism here and in much of the industrialized world. The biggest perks to being part of the financial ruling elite in a fascist state are being "too big to fail" and above the law.

Like Ayn Rand, Dick Chaney, and other vampires...

I think some people just become insulated, isolated, and surrounded by sycophants and users. They grow cynical, cold, and paranoid. They use their power and money to project that animosity and disdain outward upon the world and try to prove they aren't really paranoid by becoming like a cancer to society itself. They infect and mutate hope into despair, community into selfish individualism, families into marketing demographics, and social strata into rigid class systems.

Some people are happy to play the pariah, as they have hearts full of nothing but fear and avarice.

So what's the problem? British Parliament serves the public with tax money they get from their citizens, right? Accordingly, they can be legally "followed" by PI's and media so the public is informed. You don't suppose Parliament has something they want hidden from the public, do ya?

The LW whining gets tiresome for us normal folks - any chance you could stop all the constant whining?

The actions against Members of Parliament constitute an offence against the Parliament. Any attempt to impede, by any means, an MP from performing his or her duties fall within either a breach of Parliamentary Privilege (goes back to Charles 1st) or a Comtempt of Parliament.

Both are potentially very serious offences as they are deemed to be an attack on the very institution of the Parliament itself and thus an attack on the Sovereign Will of The People.

LOL! Oh, ild, you really think News Corp's intention was to inform the public of what Parliament was up to? News Corp was only following the Parliament members involved in the investigation of News Corp.

So you think News Corp was going to tell the public who Parliament questioned about News Corp? You are a riot.

Why was News Corp so concerned about who Parliament was seeing or questioning about News Corp? You don't suppose News Corp and Rupert Murdoch has something they want hidden from the public, do ya?

What actions against Parliament have been taken? You actually think the following of Members of Parliament constitutes "actions against Members of Parliament"? And curious has the stones to call ME retarded! Pathetic.

Hint Number one: matters of public records are matters of public records for anyone and everyone in England.

Point number two, ONE person (Greenslade) has asserted, "Every Single Member Of The Parliamentary Committee Investigating [Phone Hacking] Were Followed By Private Eyes And/Or Members Of [News of the World] Staff". Greenslade could be exaggerating/embellishing.

Meanwhile, on the other side of the planet Uncle Rupert's Australian satrap, John Hartigan, announced his resignation last Wednesday.

Harto has had a lot of problems in recent times including the Melbourne Storm Rugby League salary cap scandal, the compromising of a joint Federal and Victoria Police raid on a suspected terrorist group by prematurely publishing details regarding the action and the increasing anger at their absurdly biased reporting regarding the Federal Government. The Sydney Daily Telegraph headline following the passing of the carbon pricing legislation last week had a front page with a full page photo of Greens Leader, Senator Brown hugging his deputy Senator Milne with the headline "HEAVEN HELP US" taking up about a third of the page (former Terrorgraph editor Col Allen, now at the New York Post left his mark there). One senior Cabinet Minister took the extraordinary step of dealing with questions from Murdoch journos by giving his answers as a general media release and others have been taking similar actions.

It has been suggested that the change at the top may be used as a chance to repair the relationship between News and the Commonwealth Government. We'll see.

What is undeniable is the fact that Uncle Rupert's playground is getting a bit messy these days and could do with a bit of a clean up. Judging by his previous effort with the Augean Stables, I reckon Hercules might be the bloke for the job!

The thing that bugs me about the Murdochs and their media monopolization is that they did it not only get rich and richer, but to shape the entire world, its politics, and its societies in the image they had of a perfect world. Of course, they are far too stupid to be able to do that well or to anyone's benefit but their own.

But what a world: where the populace is undereducated to the point they are gulled by whatever the Murdoch media tells them Where war and unrest in the Middle East is their preferred status there. Where political leaders have to do what the Murdochs say and not what their own people want them to do.

How could such peabrains as the Murdochs aspire to rule the world in this manner? I guess because they are peabrains who think they're smarter than anyone else.
