Blah, blah, blah, LIBERALS! Blah, blah, blah MEDIA! Blah, blah, blah HATE!!

Hey, Limbaugh, you ARE the media. Why don't you do something to change the paradigm instead of complaining about it?

It is and has always been funny to me that like you said, they wallow in their victimhood, when they HAVE A GIGANTIC BULLY PULPIT from which to speak from. Instead of correcting the so called liberal media, they just yammer on and on about how "bad" it is.

Limbaugh has a gigantic radio audience. As do the other right wing talkers. Liberal or progressive radio doesn't really exist. Where it does, it is small compared to the conservative titans of the genre.

And yet, they complain, whine, and complain some more about how awful the liberal media is.

I've asked this question a bunch of times. If the liberal media is so prevalent and all powerful and biased, why don't the right wingers champion bringing BACK the Fairness Doctrine? Then, they would be given their fair shake, and, coverage wouldn't be as biased as they allegedly believe it is against conservatives.

Since they're NOT begging to have it brought back, makes me wonder that of course, they know, the media isn't liberal.

If you have XM/Sirius, you can get one channel of "Progressive" talk radio. Here's what you get on that one channel-

Alex Bennett- crass, disgusting gutter humor, with almost constant cursing, very little actual political talk.

Stephanie Miller- fart jokes, high-pitched breathless laughter from the host, constant references to her "comedy" tour and guest appearances from Miller's equally unfunny "comedian" friends. Oh, and constant requests that Progressives "stop whining" and fall in line behind the Democratic Party.

Ed Schultz- pro death penalty water-carrier for the Democrats, when he isn't pimping Bio-Green Clean and other sponsors. Friend of "Progressives" like Kent Conrad. No patience for anyone with even the slightest criticism of the President from the Left.

Thom Hartmann- fine human being, and intelligent, but addicted to interviewing Think Tank Conservatives, as if they don't get enough air time on conservative shows (hey Thom, how about interviewing liberals?)

Media Matters for America Radio- God-awful hosts who apparently don't do a minute of prep before the red light comes on. More "uhhhhhhhs" and "ummmmmmmsssss..." and missing sound clips than any show I've ever heard on radio.

Sometimes I think that "Progressive" talk radio is a plot to make Right-Wing talk radio seem entertaining by comparison.

You analysis is on point. But why do you think Conservative radio does so much better than Progressive radio? I listen to Air America when it first went on the air and enjoyed it. I like hearing other peoples thoughts.

There are many reasons, first it isnt about listener support, they dont pay the bills. Advertisers do and the business community is more hesitant to subsidize a liberal message for many reasons. Second I dont think the liberal and conservative bases are alike. I never listened to Air America. The preaching to the choir thing really doesnt appeal much to me. I also like to READ. Dont get ANY news from TV or the radio at all.

I do agree that Liberals tend to look for many sources of news and talk, and don't have the obsessive need for affirmation of their believes that conservatives do. Insecure, ignorant, bigoted, frightened people NEED Limbaugh, Hannity, O'Reilly, Beck etc to tell them that they are RIGHT in their feeling that the world is screwed up by The Other. These people listen to right wing radio to be petted and told It's Ok, It's those Other People who have it wrong. That wouldn't work for Liberals, who don't dismiss different opinions out of hand and who simply don't believe in something called Absolutes when figuring Right and Wrong. That's why I find most "Liberal" talk radio incredibly boring and condescending. Right wingers LIKE it like that.

I'm not so sure that conservative radio does it better, but they do it more, and remember, all of the big media companies are corporation owned, which means, they would like pro corporate shows on there, which tends to be, right wing radio.

When Air America started, it's flagship show was hosted by Al Franken. It also had Jenine Garafalo (sic) and Sam Seder.

Then it got cheap and started dumping talent. It took on Lionel and Jerry Springer. Basically became unlistenable.

Progressive talk radio does every bit as good as Conservative talk radio in the ratings. But it's boycotted by sponsors, forced on to low-wattage stations, kept off the stations owned by the big conglomerates (Westwood One, for ex) because they would rather spread their message than make money. Right wing radio is seen as an investment for the corporations. Air America could have survived and even prospered if a few liberal millionaires had seen progressive talk the same way. Instead Air America got Mark Green and his determination to cut it to the bone to make a quick buck- and when that didn't work, he killed it.

Air America also had a program that featured Chuck D, Lizz Winstead, and a then unknown Rhodes scholar named Rachel Maddow. If Air America did nothing other than launch Maddow's career, then it did well. I agree about the unlistenable Springer and Lionel, but they only appeared on the network long after its death knell had begun to sound.

They need the scapegoat. 'Cause nothing rallies people more than a common enemy. By complaining about the "ref," they get a two-fer: an institution to hate, and a way to neuter any negativity that institution exposes. After all, why should we believe that which we hate?

I'm getting so tired of this whole liberal media bulls**t. It's demonstrably untrue, it's in fact quite the opposite. Media is overwhelming populated by corporatists and Republicans and their messages are far more widely disseminated that the message of liberals.

I just never thought we'd become so collectively stupid as a society that we'd so eagerly swallow lies this obvious.

I just find it odd that people continue to fall for this line again and again and again. I certainly have my problems with the media, tending to view them as generally lazy and unwilling to rock the boat. However, when they do rock the boat, the GOP and its talkshop immediately cry foul. It is enough to make you sick. I never heard this crap when the media launched into Clinton - instead the GOP was cheering them on from the sidelines.

American traditions and the American ethic require us to be truthful, but the most important reason is that truth is the best propaganda and lies are the worst. To be persuasive we must be believable; to be believable we must be credible; to be credible we must be truthful. It is as simple as that.

That reminds me of something I read long ago, probably not too many years after that smarmy commercial was filmed.

A witness in some court case was asked on cross examination how susceptible she was to advertising, and she replied, "Not at all."

The attorney then asked her what tooth paste she used.

"Gleem," she replied. "But it's not because of advertising; it's just that I can't brush after every meal."

Need I mention what Gleem's advertising slogan was?

Murrow was a great journalist but I think his real lasting legacy will be the number of people he inspired to pursue the kind of reporting he was famous for.

"Whenever I'm not sure about something, the ethics of something, the question I ask myself is, 'What would Murrow have done? What would Murrow say?' It seems strange after all these years that I still have him as a kind of symbol and an emblem to live by, but I do."

              Daniel Schorr (August 31, 1916 - July 23, 2010)

I miss Daniel Schorr and what he could have contributed to the discussion in this campaign.

I think that the number of aspiring journalists inspired by Murrow is fading fast. Most "journalists" today seem more inspired by the massive paydays being garnered by Limbaugh, O'Reilly, Hannity and their ilk. Sure you can be respected- or, you can own multiple houses and a penthouse in Manhattan.

I think that most people on television and radio have made their choice. And we are to blame for buying what they are selling.

One of my favorite Murrow quotes:
We must not confuse dissent with disloyalty.
Pretty much says it all, and stands in direct contrast to Fox, Limbaugh, and the rest of the right-wing echo chamber.

Murrow was right regarding dissent and disloyalty. Dissent has to do with disagreement. I don't care that you add a story about actions that you declare were met with injustice. We must not confuse dissent with dissidence either.

Reminds me that essentially, all republicans who are in elected office are more than welcome to chide and act derisively towards any media source that they choose. A good example is Newt last night and today's invictive directed towards CNN.

But... When a democrat does it, like when Obama called out FoxNews once. Oh. My. God. Democracy is crumbling down around us!! Obama has an ENEMIES LIST!! JUST LIKE NIXON! Obama is trying to stifle free speech!

          Anyone see the disconnect there?

The hopelessly corrupt, incredibly lazy, willfully incompetent media, love themselves nothing as much as they loves them a juicy sexy-talk sex scandal. It's about as complicated an idea as they can fathom.

Gingrich knows that. Liberals and progressives have nothing to do with it, and the media are not liberal or progressive. They're paid corporate shills.

My dad was a die-hard Republican growing up, but I would doubt he would recognize this party if he were alive today. Bush pretty much destroyed his faith in the GOP. My mom left the party in the 1980s, not being able stand the Moral Majority and everything they stood for. She recognized then, the racism and hatred that was coming our way. She grew up in the deep South and saw racism in action, everyday so she knew what these people, hiding under their Bibles, were fully capable of. She is now more of a liberal than I am.

Actually, it'd be fairly easy for Limpballs to occupy Wall St. -- just stand in the middle of it.

He would then not only occupy Wall St., but also Water St., William St., Broadway, and most of Lower Manhattan . . .

You REALLY need to let go of this silly inability to understand what the word hypocrisy means. Race is not something that you can control. Your weight is. Those two things are not the same. When you treat two DIFFERENT things, that is two things that are NOT the same differently then it isnt hypocrisy.

I dont care that Rush is fat. I care that he has no decency and no integrity. I care that he is vile, loathsome and just a flat out horrible human being, AND a liar.

This is a reasonable point, Psycho3D, and so I will attempt a reasonable answer.

Race is something that can't be helped. It's just how you were born. And there is massive evidence that mere skin pigmentation has no effect whatsoever on intelligence, ambition, talent, honor, etc.

Fat is something you choose. Rush chooses to be fat. In my mind, this choice of his is fair game for comment. For example, I wouldn't say Rush is obese, you just need to paint stripes on him so you can tell if he's walking or rolling.

Lastly, Rush IS a racist, at least on the radio. He drags race into almost every single show he does. In light of that, poking fun at his weight is no more than his just deserts.

So you can't see the difference between making fun of someone's girth vs someone's race/ethnicity? You also realize rush opens the door by commenting on other people's weight, right? You are really effed up.

The parties only serve to help us easily identify the candidate most likely to represent our beliefs.

Unfortunately, what that's turned into is Republican and Republican-lite.

We need opposing ideologies in much the same way we need the separation of powers, but what we have instead are people enslaved to campaign contributions.

Well I look at it this way, it's one of the only ways to get opposing ideologies to stand out, and without opposition you wouldn't have anyone thinking about innovative ways to fix things or get others to their side. I guess it's not so much about Republican or Democratic parties just as much as having a "one side, and the other side". I think of it in economics terms, like competition, we don't want a monopoly in politics, cuz that'd be like Nazi Germany or something ya know?

I realize Lispy only has to do his propaganda well enough to fool the typical dittohead, but it still seems like he would be better at it by now.

He's complaining about somebody using the term "cockfight" as being prejudiced and elitist (he's imagining this, of course), but then asks if he's comparing the south to Cuba.

In other words " Hey, quit trying to use the bigotry we use against those dang Mexicans in Cuba against us!"

This is why they don't understand what 'hypocrisy' means.

The media is financed by advertising revenue from corporations and small business owners who get a bigger slice of the economic pie when the interests of working people are suppressed and conservatives are in power. It's hard to understand how the media doesn't actually have a strong conservative bias.

Don't try to wrap your brain around it; you can't take him literally. His greatest enemies are the ones that don't exist.

      Limbaugh is primarily interested in:
      1. Himself
      2. Those who support his lifestyle

His lifestyle is to gather adoration and to acquire & maintain wealth.

To keep his $400 million dream afloat, telling the truth would alienate (2). They would, once suddenly educated, vote for people and policy that would make him less obscenely rich. That would make them, and him, think less of number (1).

So what to do? Create your enemies. Divine them from the sky and rant and rave about how dangerous they are: taxes, certain news media, SpongeBob, regulation, abortion, unions, etc. Those are more important than real enemies, like poverty, "free" trade, lack of public education, losing habeas corpus, money=speech, etc.

That's why it doesn't make sense when he crows about the enemy-of-the-day, because those fake enemies always change according to convenience. Take one off the shelf, spout about it, put it back on the shelf, take another one... That's why "the media" are useful when he likes what they say and bad (enemies) when they "hate conservatives."

You know that abortion isn't the enemy; blocking health education is the enemy. Taxes aren't the enemy; regressive tax policy is the enemy. The news media that "hate conservatives" aren't the enemy; the news media that aren't honest are the enemy.

For Limbaugh, honesty is a problem, because it can't sustain his lifestyle. What well-informed person would want to pay more in taxes for working than someone who receives investment income? What educated person would support people who want to raid their pension? So Limbaugh will do all this hand-waving, invoking fake enemies to keep his audience afraid and angry and upset with each other while adoring him. The real enemy for him is the truth about himself, and he has to fool his audience into paying attention to anything but that truth, which supports his lifestyle, which means that every day--each and every day--his audience, if educated, is one step away from being his enemy. That's a tough way to live.

Dishonesty maintains his fortune, and to give that up would be a serious blow to number (1). That would change his lifestyle. Sure, he'll have money for life, but the adoration..gone. He has nowhere to go but straight ahead, performing his self-aggrandizing / bogeyman schtick, until a force bigger than him knocks him off course.

I heard Santorum say on MSNBC that NBC and MSNBC has treated him the most fairly off all the news organization. Guess Rush missed that one.

Great Mother Jones article here on conservative news and radio.

How many times did Rushbo repeat 'cock-fighting' in that clip? With w-a-a-a-y too much emphasis on the final 'k.' He seems to take great delight in that expression.

Limbaugh- you are correct- because crazed 'conservatives' pant-loads like you represent a much more real and present danger to this country than both the Taliban and Al Qaeda.

Well they're both trying to destroy America. One from within and one from outside. I'd say the ones on the inside are more dangerous and hated than the ones on the outside.
