With all due respect, people should not inject race where race has not been mentioned... this is what opens the door for people like o'reilly and beck to claim that any criticism of the President is answered with the charge of racism... no, the charge of racism is leveled at those who unnecessarily and gratuitously inject race into a matter that does not involve race and where race has not even been mentioned... and so please and with all due respect, stop mentioning race where race doesn't belong and hasn't even been mentioned, let others like o'reilly and beck be the ones to kick-off that ball, don't kick it off for them.

Exactly. If there hadn't been any irrational partisan attacks against Clinton, then I would have more sympathy for the charges of racism. It's been well-established that these people hate all Democrats, though.

It may be worse now because of added racism, but after the Clinton years it's hard to look at most of these criticisms and assume that they wouldn't have been used against him as well.

Agreed. Not to mention, that their racism when it occurs is so ridiculously obvious. We don't need dogwhistles to get our point across. I seriously doubt most of the republicans, even the most vile vitriolic ones, actually hate Obama because he's black.

Im thinking their attacks have a lot more to do with the fact that President Obama exists and is a person.

              ... and is a Democrat.

The Pubbies believe that ONLY their guys are fit for prez. It's like they believe they're The Ruling Class - who should be allowed to call all the shots, whether they win or lose elections. (When Dems win, they accuse fraud)

Have you watched them on any talk shows, lately? They filibuster and use up as much time as they can - sometimes repeating the same talking points 3, 4, 5 or more times. Then, when it's the Dem/lib's turn to talk, they get about a half sentence out when the RWer interrupts, talks over, shouts down, etc, the Dem - and even the host!

They think they're entitled to lead - and that's the way they act...

But, in reality MUCH of the attacks Obama gets are from people that deep down are indeed HATING the fact we have a black President.

Veiled racism is still racism, and there are still a lot of people of voting age that remember America when segregation was cool, or they are the products of extremely racist parents that remember that era as the 'golden age' of America.

Um...as hated as Clinton was by Fox and the right wing wurlitzer, he was never criticized for using AF1. So there must be something different about Obama that exposes him to this heightened level of criticism. Hmmm...wonder what it could be?

I think the criticism of Obama is worse than it was for Clinton, but I don't think it's because he's black, even though they use that angle against Obama.

In my opinion, what is causing the increased criticism is the fact that the Republican Party has gotten worse. They have increased their financial dependence on industries and special interests. As a result they have to lie and dissemble more to get more money but hide the ugly truth that keeps getting uglier. And they have to attack Democrats with more and more fury and hypocrisy. They have also become more dependent on votes from social conservatives, racists, gun-nuts and other just plain idiots. So they have to lie more, and attack more, deny more science etc, to get the idiot vote. Obama happens to be black, so they run with that too; it's just a bonus.

I ask myself; would the attacks be just as bad and dishonest if John Kerry was President? I say yes, because all these attacks are just a ploy to hide the ugly truth and divert attention from what the Republicans are really up to.

Remember that Murdoch has done this before in England. He and Thatcher made a deal. Murdoch gave her ridiculously positive coverage in his newspapers, and Thatcher beat back the unions for him and gave him everything he needed. What you're seeing now in the US is just a rerun.

Great post, I couldn't have said it better myself, and if I had tried it would have taken seven more paragraphs and included a few superfluous analogies and sarcasm.

You outlined and crystallized what I've been observing over the course of my adult lifetime from the right. It is this steady, downward, negative spiral of hypocrisy and lies - brought on by greed and their loyalty to big donors over citizens - fueled by a need to appeal to the worst instincts of man and the most ignorant segments of the population - which requires them to dig ever deeper into the well of hypocrisy and lies and begin the process all over...

Brilliant, wizbang, +A post! You need to coin a term for this.

Thanks Coolslaw. And you are right about it being a vicious spiral. You can see the result on this thread and others: lots of former Republican voters who are disgusted. It really bothers me that this still hasn't translated into more votes for Democrats.

A key part of this downward spiral, as I keep saying, is that the mainstream media have abdicated their role as guardians of the truth, and are now just standing aside and using the fray as a kind of morbid entertainment.

Now to coin a term, how about "Republicans are a bunch of corrupt, hypocritical, as*h***s!" Is that catchy? No, I need to work on it.

Not every comment made about PBO by a conservative is racist, but I must say that, as someone who lived under segregation and through the civil rights period in American history, and as someone who has an intimate knowledge of, and direct experience with, racism, almost everything the right has done/said about PBO has its basis in racism. Referring to a black person as "the other," is one of the clearest signs of racism that a white person can send to a black American. Some of us have spent our entire lives being told by some whites that we're "the other" and are not deserving of the respect they'd give to a white person. That Bolling, all of a sudden, doesn't feel that an American president who happens to be black shouldn't use AF1 to travel to discuss jobs or to do anything else, cannot be viewed as anything else but racism. The only way I would view it as not being tied to racism would be if Bolling had said similar things about President Bush, but he didn't. If there's a difference to Bolling, it's not just the difference in the two presidents' political parties. I know racism when I see it. Just thought I'd share my perspective on Bolling's comment from the POV of a black American who has lived 50+ years in this country.

Whether motivated by his own racism, or an appeal to the racist instincts of his viewers, or just simple democratic presidential derangement syndrome. I think we can all agree that Bolling's attack is idiotic.

It's the secret service that takes care of all the transportation needs of the President. They've been doing it for many years now and I don't envy them that job. Especially since we live in a free society and a world full of nut-jobs and hate mongers with brains fried from endless hours of AM radio and Fox news driving their irrational hate.

So there you go Eric Bolling. Not only is Air Force One and the President's travel security in the hands of capable secret service professionals, but you and your hate fueled rhetoric and divisive lies makes it even more necessary!

The problem is that, for the most part, the wingnut talkers are so carefully avoiding the more overt racially-related language that I wonder about the true motivations behind much of their vehemence and how strong it is. They've gone completely nuts since the election in 2008, even to the point of completely doing 180's on certain policies. It makes no sense.

I wish it was so subtle that I could agree with your conclusion. These people show a resentment so hateful and visceral that it's way beyong politics, partisanship and logic.Sure much of the same criticisms would have been levied at a white Democratic President. The difference is the amount, intensity, relentless nature and themes of the attacks. It is so over the top that nothing but tribalism and racism explains it.You can easily rationalize this comment from Bolling as not being racial, just as you can for Gingrich or Limbaugh. When you consider the totality of their attacks ( person by person) individually and collectively it smells like rotten racism!Sorry but to me that is factor one. They do it because it works for them! Why is it so important to the Republican base that someone gets in Obama's face? They want him "put in his place" just like Juan Williams.Visceral racism is driving it because they see both of them as uppity N*****s.That is plain for all to see! They do the same type of relentless attacking of the 1st Lady, and even the children get attacked.Sad but still true!It is unprecedented.

This luxury does not come cheap. Recent estimates of the direct cost of flying Air Force One range from about $60,000 per hour on the low side to $181,000 per hour on the high side.

Ok maybe his cost is right, but how many other presidents used AF1 to go on re-election campaign? How else is he supposed to travel? You just don't want him going around the country HE'S RUNNING stating a case as to why he's better than other the four jack(off's)-in a-box(es)

The reality is that the cost would be much higher if he flew commercially or by a hired private jet. The added security at public airports (vs a military) and to inspect commercial or private aircraft would offset any savings by using a smaller plane. The secret service vehicles and personnel would still have to be transported.

Not to mention how it would be a downright disaster to the flying public. They would basically shut down the airport for the president. THAT would really be a convenience. I am sure that the businesses at the airports would just really appreciate it.

Actually, any airport that the President flies into is shut down prior to his arrival. In effect, AF1 is always flying in a "no fly zone". Airspace is cleared of all other airplanes as a precaution for a period of time prior to arrival and subsequent to departure.

Any public airport. Domestically, where possible the President flies into a military airfield. Until the some time in the late 80's or early 90's, Presidents visiting Chicago flew into Glenview Naval Airstation. Once the airbase closed, they started flying into O'Hare. Even after the base was official closed, but still owned by the government, Presidents visiting the northern suburbs of Chicago would fly by Marine One from O'Hare to the closed base where a motorcade would pick him up. This meant that about 15-50 miles of road would not have to be shut down for the motorcade to travel the full distance from O'Hare.

An interesting side note, all of the entrance ramps to the expressways between O'Hare and the loop and the route to the President's house now have gates (like a railroad crossing) at the beginning of the ramp so that the secret service can very quickly and effectively close down the entire route. They started going up before his inauguration.

Actually, I do believe the press pay the market rate for the flight.

But I found this more interesting:

To put Obama's use of Air Force One into context, we also asked for travel data for his predecessor, President George W. Bush. Bush took 89 missions and 259 sorties in 2002, his second year as president, according to the airlift group. And in his first two years, Bush took 148 missions with 416 sorties, compared with 126 missions with 324 sorties for Obama over two years.

The language of deceit flows effortless from Bolling.

Typical, IOKIYAR... every President travels across the country to get support for the proposals made during a SOTU. Bolling wouldn't be quite so full of BS if he complained about Air Force One costs during the Bush years.

Bolling is such a slug. It's President Obama, not Mr. Obama. I know it hurts your argument complaining about Air Force One and then refer to him as the President, but it's the reality, and just calling him Mr. Obama doesn't change that fact.

Does that mean Mitt Romney will buy out the secret service, then fire them all, then sell off whatever assets they had acquired during their tenure as executive branch security, then hire foreign nationals at pennies on the dollar to build him a hot air balloon out of magic underwear to fly around in?

Of course that was his plan before someone criticized it, now he's doing the same thing, but stating categorically he's never believed in privatizing the secret service.

If these haters really don't want Obama re-elected they should have concentrated their efforts & leveled more critiques towards the GOP field & on getting a viable GOP alternative. Um, no; not exactly -- unless that Piper Cub were Air Force property.

The designator "[branch of service] One" applies only to the Air Force, Marine, Army, or Navy aircraft the President flies in.

Civilian aircraft -- such as the United Air Lines commercial flight Nixon took to CA back in 1973, or the Gulfstream 500 President Obama took the First Lady to NYC on his date night -- have the designator "Executive One" . . .

Next, it was common to see mortified owners nervously checking to see if they were pointing in the right direction, since the front of the Janus looked very much like the back of the Janus. Of course, appearance is only part of what a car has to offer. The Janus' performance is what truly set the reputation of German engineering back to medieval times. Raging down the highway with 14 horsepower at a max speed of 50 mph, the driver of the Janus might expect to hear fellow motorists shout out many different variations of his car's name...minus the J.

Air Force One is simply the name of any plane that the President is in. We have two specially outfitted planes which are designed for use by our President in order to keep him secure. EVERY president has used these planes to travel, even during campaigns. As long as the President is on official business, it's his right to use them. If he's on personal business, he's billed for their use.

I NEVER heard these folks bi*ch about GWB using AF1 to make 77 trips to Crawford at an average cost of around $250,000 each.

This bolling character's math came up with what number, about a million and a half dollars to operate Air Force One as it essentially flies around most of the country?

What a bunch of whining dishonest hypocrites these Fox hacks are, I'm sure Mitt Romney and newt and santorum combined spent many times more than that sum as they traveled around first class in Iowa alone, travel and hotels and meals and ads, millions and millions of dollars in terrible stupid ads alone, in Iowa alone!

Take note all: right now not only is blind and irrational Obama hatred at it's zenith on Fox, and not only has it never been more obvious for how non-policy related it is (like in attacking the President for the expense of operating Air Force One) and obvious for how unconstructive it is, but guess what else?

The great majority of the American people don't feel that way, they not only don't hate President Obama, but they are sick and tired of Obama hatred!

True, take note, right now Fox is engaged in a very unpopular and destructive campaign, they are losers, and while you and I and the majority of the American people know it, perhaps they (News Corp) do not...

And so it fits right into their mission of ignorance, that they should continue in their blind and irrational hatred of the President, right at the same time that all of the rest of us are completely sick of it!

The difference in the near universal hatred of George W. Bush by the American people (again, a universal hatred that does not exist for President Obama except among Fox employees and their fans), the difference is found in these national policies as a true and real cause...

The military invasions and occupations of Iraq and Afghanistan, costing thousands of lives and trillions of dollars.

The global theft of a trillion dollars or more in private capital from Wall Street banks and financial services companies, all of it going un-investigated (and therefore the thieves going unpunished) and that theft being covered out of the US Treasury, contributing to our federal deficit and practically bankrupting the national treasuries of several other nations.

The price-gouging by Exxon-Mobil et al, which drove fuel costs up to where they still haven't come down much if at all.

The crazy inflation of defense spending (the true and principal reason for our federal deficit) all of it in the name of an insane "global war on terror" that doesn't protect a single American from anything at all.

There are many more reasons for George W. Bush and Dick Cheney hatred, all of them real and all of them good...

But there is only one reason for this narrow but intense and malicious hatred these News Corp employees and their followers have for Obama, and it's simply because he is President of the United States.

That's it, there is no other reason.

Agreed. I couldn't stand Bush, still can't. However, I didn't question the notion that the man, as president, had the right to use Air Force One. I view it, as most sensible people do, as something the leader of the MOST POWERFUL country in the world should do - it keeps him safe and secure while he travels throughout the nation. It's just a fricken' no brainer. The president travels for a multitude of reasons - elections, meetings, speeches, etc. Frankly, I'd rather have him flying throughout the country, meeting people, than staying in the cesspool of Washington.

It's also worth noting that most of the country gave Bush the benefit of the doubt in the months following 9/11. Support for the invasion of Afghanistan was pretty high, as well.

By contrast, Obama never had anything resembling a "honeymoon". They started yapping at his heals before he was even sworn in.

The math is, indeed, simple. The longer a plane is in the air the lower the operating cost. What Bolling did was find a number for the most expensive trip ever and then multiplied that number by the number of travel hours. That, of course, is BS.

I mentioned the increasingly nutty posts I see on Facebook, and wanted to ask sort of an open question, to anybody who uses FB or other social networking sites, if they've made the same observation I have-

It seems, almost across the board, that my more liberal friends, when they post updates about politics, generally type out their own original thoughts, what's on their minds, their interpretation of events.

Aside from little one-line rants and slogans ( not really original, but at least manually repeated), my right wing friends politics-related posts are almost all copy & pasted or "shared".

        It's really a stark contrast.

Both Gingrich and Mittens are simply put, pathetic, and a good number of them know it. Gingrich is far from the family values crap that they have been spewing for years, and Mittens is damaged goods for not being conservative enough, a Mormon and a potential tax-evader. THEY are going crazy and will continue to do so because they have NOTHING, and they know it. Their claims against the President will continue to get more outlandish by the day simply because the entire party has slipped off the proverbial rails. It is desperation, plain and simple.

It has never, not once, been in his own words. How do I know? It's always spelled correctly. He's the poorest speller I've ever seen. Almost every very word he writes is spelled close to phonetically. He's written things like "he drunked a krwart of bere."

He's also a convicted felon, with several gun related convictions who poses on Facebook with his various guns, including what looks like a Kalashnikov. I'm pretty sure his right to own assault rifles has been suspended because of his criminal activities.

I've only seen him once in thirty years but have read of his exploits in the paper many times. He's got the same name as my brother and I like to break his balls about another arrest whenever the cousin makes the news again.

I just checked back on that "Dear Obama" post I saw this morning, and surprisingly, it wasn't just his wingnut friends agreeing, there was a long, well-written comment filled with facts, that ended with a mention that the guy was tired of seeing Obama blamed for all of Bush's problems.

Then the punch line, from the original poster- he was tired of seeing Bush saddled with Clinton's problems. I'm pretty sure republicans have been trying to take credit for Clinton's "problems" for years.

Oh yeah, about the spelling - I see the same thing on Facebook as at most websites. There are some exceptions, but there's generally a direct relationship between hatred of Obama and illiteracy. Lots of lectures about how stupid the Obamabots are from the Hooked on Phonics set.

The wingnuts seem pretty scarce lately. I saw muffie linking to yet another article she didn't understand, and Jimmy/Tommy/007/whatever is around some, not understanding anything, but most of them seem to be under their rocks as their leading lights try to gain sympathy for banks, or launch a campaign for Emperor of the Moon.

How much did it cost to fly Bush Jr to Crawford to cut shrubs rather than be president? How many times did Bush Jr use AirForce One to Campaign? Anyone at FAUX do the math or follow the money or do a comparison?

It's the same old stupid smear that it was last time they trotted it out. The wingnuts hold on to smears like...well like the rich wingnuts hold on to money. Everytime The President boards Air Force One, he shouldn't. Everytime The President takes a vacation, he shouldn't. Everytime the President hosts a State Dinner, he shouldn't. What the wingnuts want is for The President to sit at his desk in the Oval Office, with his feet on the floor, and type up his resignation. That is the only thing that will shut these morons up. And that wouldn't even work. Because if he resigned to appease them, they would never stop crowing about the fact that they got him to resign.

Taxpayers wouldn't have to pay such a high rate for the use of Air Force One if Obama was a better deal negotiator. A Republican President would have outsourced the crew and used Blackwater for security saving us tens of dollars.

Yeah, let him ride coach. That way some Tea Party whackjob can take a shot at him.

This ginned up BS gets old. Ooooh the President flies on aircraft specifically designated for his use.

No other President in the history of air travel has ever done that. Though I'm sure W would love to have ridden a horse, if his fake ranch had any.

WASHINGTON - President George W. Bush is using Air Force One for re-election travel more heavily than any predecessor, wringing maximum political mileage from a perk of office paid for by taxpayers.

While Democratic rival John Kerry charters a plane to roam the country, Bush often travels at no cost to his campaign simply by declaring a trip "official" travel rather than "political."

Bush has logged more than 68,000 miles this year on Air Force One. With rare exceptions he confines his travels to the more than a dozen states he and Kerry are fighting hardest for and to places where he is raising campaign money.

An Associated Press tally shows Bush has made at least 114 trips in the 17 months since January 2003. Clinton flew Air Force One on 123 domestic trips between January 1995 and mid-October 1996, a period of 22 months. It was a record for re-election-related travel aboard the aircraft, according to the Center for Public Integrity.

Well, I sure do remember ol' GWBushie using it to campaign for other people as well as himself. Does Bolling think that Air Force One was made for only the neocon presidents to use? What a crock.

Know what we really need to do to balance the budget? Send FUX News commentators on assignment of the poor. Take away their jobs, donate their income to the deficit and have them stand in soup lines and sleep in allies. Maybe then they would actually get it and be really earning their money when they returned.
