INGRAHAM: What's your sense on this 1,200-page Senate bill?
VAN SUSTEREN: Well, let me -- first of all, anything that is more than two pages long, let's just face it, we can't do, because, you know, it's been an abject failure every time we get complex. This is a real simple way to solve this immigration -- at least I think. There are anywhere from 12 to 13 million people in this country illegally. Many of them are good neighbors, hard workers, you know, church-going, whatever you want to call them. Good people.
We have, you know, we have 3 or 4 percent maybe the criminal element that we don't want here -- whatever it is. But the problem is, they did break our law. They came here without permission or they overstayed a visa when we gave them permission. But they're here. So what do we do?
The Democrats, I mean -- they're gonna be here. We have to face that reality.
INGRAHAM: Don't give them voting rights. That's one thing you don't do.
VAN SUSTEREN: Well, that's the whole thing. That's the whole thing is that -- let them be here. Give them an orange card. Their children will be born here and Americans have just as many rights. But those who violate our law, just don't give them voting rights.
And if they want to become citizens, so that they do get voting rights, we do have a path to citizenship because people become citizens all the time. They're gonna have to go home and do it the right way. And that seems fair.
But the interesting thing about it is that what illegal immigrants, if you talk to them, what their biggest concern is is that they don't want the immigration to come in in the middle of the night and rip them out of their beds and separate them from their families or whatever.
INGRAHAM: As if that's happening.
VAN SUSTEREN: You know, giving them some sort of residency without vote. But let them be here.
