Statement from David Brock on Matthews' Comments
January 17, 2008 8:13 pm ET
David Brock, President & CEO of Media Matters for America:
It is a step in the right direction that Matthews has finally admitted his comments about Hillary Clinton have been unfair, "inappropriate" and "callous."
Matthews said going forward he will try to be more supportive of the right of women to full equality and respect for their ambitions. That is a pledge MSNBC has a responsibility to hold him to in the weeks and months ahead. Media Matters certainly will.

Mathews' sexist/masogeny shouldn't be our main concern. Rather, he attempted to influence an election -- to destroy the Democrat's strongest candidate -- Hillary. While Mathews may temporarily edit his behavior, his news model will remain the same: Mathews will select guest pundits who are pre-coached as to Mathews' preferences for show content and slant. It has been amazing the guest pundits who previously seemed prudent over a range of topics, only to change into Hillary-haters at the same time Mathews stepped up his assults. Even since his Leno apparance, some of Mathews' panels have been imbalanced 3 to 1 with guest taking stances against or very luke warm to Hillary.
