Couric Interview Spliced & Diced to Remove McCain's False Iraq Claim.

Media Out to Get McCain? Hardly.

Washington, DC - Media Matters for America today criticized the CBS Evening News and anchor Katie Couric for airing an interview with Sen. John McCain that excised a false statement the Arizona Republican made regarding events in Iraq by splicing the video to include an answer he gave to a different question in place of his original false statement.

"It goes without saying that this violates the most basic tenets of journalism, and CBS should be ashamed," said J. Jioni Palmer, spokesman for Media Matters. "This is an appalling breach of the public's trust, for which there is no excuse. CBS has yet to substantively address its decision to mix and match their questions with McCain's answers letting the Senator off the hook for his false statements on an issue as important as Iraq."

"CBS and Couric have a responsibility to correct this serious error in judgment immediately -- they owe the American people an apology and an explanation. They need to explain why they covered up Sen. McCain's falsehood by leaving it on the cutting room floor. They should also broadcast that portion of the interview in its entirety, while noting for the American people that his answer is false," Palmer said.

In response to CBS' statement released today about the controversy, Palmer said: "Now CBS claims they edited the interview 'to give viewers a fair expression of the candidates' major differences.' But there's nothing fair about deceptively editing an interview to change McCain's answer to a question -- particularly when doing so hides the fact that his original answer contained a glaring falsehood. This incident should serve as the final nail in the coffin of the myth that the media are out to get McCain -- if anything, this serious lapse of journalistic integrity only underscores the decades-long love affair McCain has enjoyed with the press."

BACKGROUND:

On the July 22 edition of the CBS Evening News, while airing portions of an interview she conducted that day with Sen. John McCain, anchor Katie Couric removed a part of his response in which he falsely asserted that the 2007 U.S. troop surge "began the Anbar awakening." In fact, the so-called Anbar awakening reportedly began in September 2006, months before the surge was even announced. Couric had asked McCain, "Senator [Barack] Obama says while the increased number of U.S. troops contributed to increased security in Iraq, he also credits the Sunni awakening and the Shia government going after militias, and says that there might have been improved security even without the surge. What's your response to that?" But rather than airing McCain's direct reply, including the false claim that the surge "began the Anbar awakening" -- an agreement by some tribal leaders in western Iraq to accept U.S. aid and cooperate with anti-Al Qaeda operations -- Couric aired comments by McCain spliced together from three separate statements he gave during the interview, one of which responded to a different question. Couric gave no indication that these comments had been edited in any manner, nor did she otherwise note McCain's falsehood.

As I said earlier, GOP-Viacom-CBS, and their lying right wing Republican Hate Hag Liar Katie Couric, whitewashed Liar McCain's surge lies from the interview in order to throw another assist to Liar McCain, because BOTH Couric and GOP-Viacom-CBS want Liar McCain to get elected, as does the rest of the corporatist conservative Republican news media.

Time to consider the inpeachment of the news media!

Impeachment of the news media, great idea.  However, there's a thing called freedom of the press.  See it Real, the problem, as I've stated many times, is not the media, the problem is the public.  We as individual citizens must demand a better brand of information and hold the media, especially these hateful clowns like Hannity, Limbaugh and Savage, accountable.  Olbermann just tore CBS a new one.  Quite embarassing to say the least.

This is the SECOND time that Keith has blasted Republican Hate Hag Katie Couric in particular, and GOP-Viacom-CBS, and he had good reason to do so.  Not that a despicable lying Republican hate hag like Couric has either the integrity nor the common sense to be embarassed.  Republican Couric AND her Republican boss Sumner Redstone are both proud of their efforts to help Liar McCain get elected, they're both good Republicans.

Your point about freedom of the press is correct, but when you have the corporatist conservative Republican news media, and in this case, GOP-Viacom-CBS and their evil Republican Katie Couric acting in what I call outright collusion with Liar McCain and his henchpeople to whitewash his gaffe/lie from an interview, then impeachment of the media becomes more than justified.

The public are also the problem, for many of them are just as bad as, or WORSE, than many of the lying right wing conservative hate-mongering talk radio hosts they listen to, and/or they support the pro-GOP conmservative bias of the news media while they lie and/or repeat the lie about the liberal media, which is the biggest conservative lie on the planet!  Until the people of this country stop being liars, fascists, racists, theocrats, hypocrites, etc., lying right wing con hate talkers and the conservative news media will continue to thrive.

Substituting answers was bad enough, but substituting it with the McCain comment that Obama wants us to lose the war is beyond despicable.

I recommend others do what I did and go to the CBS News site to complain about what they did.

This was media manipulation at its very worst.

This is MORE than media manipulation, this is media COLLUSION with Liar McCain and the Republican Party.  GOP-Viacom-CBS, for the FIRST example, AND Republican Hate Hag Couric revealed that they are both in collusion with the McCain campaign.

When Bush and McCain were running for the Republican nomiantion eight years ago, the libs loved McCain.  They suggested that dems vote in the Republican primaries in order to elect McCain.  Lib reporters told him to stop saying stupid things on the "Straight Talk Express" so they wouldn't have to report it.  What happend?  How come libs don't like McCain anymore?  He has introduced more liberal legislation than any dem in all of congressional history.  Where is the consistancy?  Libs can't lose this next election because there are two libs running.

Now everyone knows you're a complete moron. Even if you later make a sensible post, we'll remember that you were dumb enough to say that. You gotta filter out the crazy if you want someone to consider any of your better ideas.

Impeachment may not be the correct term. Deceptive labeling, or perhaps false advertising may be more appropiate.

CBS should be ashamed for themselves. We have a right to know the truth especially from a guy who is spreading false info about a war he wants to fight for 100 years.
