Washington, DC -- Less than 24 hours after declaring Lou Dobbs' pet birther story "dead" -- and saying anyone who "is not convinced doesn't really have a legitimate beef" -- CNN President Jon Klein caved to Dobbs this afternoon, reversing himself completely.

In response, Media Matters for America President Eric Burns released the following statement:

"This raises the troubling question of who is really calling the shots at CNN," said Burns. He added, "How can Klein expect Americans to believe that CNN is the 'most trusted name in news' when CNN's own president can't stand by his word? CNN's 'Lou Dobbs problem' just got a whole lot worse."

In a statement to Washington Post Co. blogger Greg Sargent, Klein defended Dobbs and stated "I think no good journalist would ever say that a particular story will never be covered again. Every day brings new facts, new pegs."

Additionally, according to Sargent, "Klein, in an interview with me just now, also took a shot at Dobbs' critics, saying they're politically motivated: 'I understand that people with a partisan point of view from one extreme or another might get annoyed that certain subjects are aired.' "

CNN president emails Dobbs pronouncing birther story "dead," but Lou won't let it go

http://mediamatters.org/research/200907240030

SUMMARY: After CNN President Jon Klein reportedly emailed information to the staff of Lou Dobbs Tonight that Klein said shows the "story" about President Obama's birth certificate "is dead," Lou Dobbs noted that evidence on air, but then asked Roland Martin: "When this could be dispelled so quickly, and -- and simply by producing [the birth certificate], why not do it?"

I dunno if Dobbs isn't angling for getting fired from CNN so he can get a bigger, better deal from Rupert.

Beck is over on FauxNews making $50 million a year and what's CNN paying Dobbs?

If the last 8 years have taught us anything, veracity is worthless, but drawing a crowd to sell TV commercials is priceless.

As a one time advertising manager for a computer maker, I've rarely found media buyers to be concerned with anything other than how many eyeballs are being delivered in a specific demographic.

Obviously, the more outrageous Dobbs gets, the more money he brings in.
However, CNN will have to drop it's ad line of "the most trusted name in news." I don't trust Dobbs or Blitzer. One is a bit racist and the other too conservative. Nothing to trust there.

Dobbs has a thing for illegal aliens in the US. He's already proved that. Now, he wants to lay claim that President Obama is illegal. The rightwing nutjobs will be tuning in for more conservanazi propaganda.

Dobbs's critics are politically motivated, but the birthers aren't???? Oh, OK, maybe the birthers have "MIXED motives": politics and insanity.

How strange that almost from the beginning Lou Dobbs has attacked everything that Obama has tried to do. He is certainly becoming the next Bill O, but perhaps that is his goal. I just wish that CNN would do what it does best; report the news.

Dobbs has this core group of watchers who are made up mostly of the same people who watch and believe Beck and Hannity.
These are the tea party people and assorted cranks.
But, they are ugly, vocal and Klein is afraid of them and making a scene outside his network

They fooled him about the size of the markey. He believed and tried to test market.Fox promoted the tea parties. The birthers used that to carry the ball on.Fox has been disapointed in the money flow. The Birther crouwd is a slightly different group. The tea baggers are donators.Tax day paying taxes got a job.A lot of the birthers may be under-employed,or un employed. But they gotta eat.The birthers are more concerned with making money off each other. Many claim exclusive distributorship of birther thinkets, and donation begging rights. This is messing with Fox and others cash flow. But its there own doing. The birthers asked for the right to sell trinkets and beg for donations, when ever they were uded to fill air time. And they gave them those rights. This is what you see going on.Outsiders geting too big a cut.Hard to run them off,may louse support.

Somewhere in that pile of verbiage is a concept, and probably a good one. But I can't find it. Could you try again, in English this time?

Dobbs and the Foxnation should spend more time explaining to the American people how our country was put in such a hole over the last eight years.

They are so quick to blame the knew administration for tackling so many issues that Bush was to stupid to handle or just maybe he was just not fit for the job in the first place.

In seven months Obama has shown the world how important it is to have a confident, intellectual, charismatic and well grounded leader leading the United States.

Dobbs and the people at Foxnews cannot and will not accept the fact that an African-American is restoring the image and credibility of this great nation.

Dobbs should join Fox because he no longer fits the direction CNN seems be headed.

Their programming and lineup is much more in tune with the progressive movement that is transforming America today into a diverse and multi-racial superpower.

Keep up the good work CNN.

Dobbs should be set free to join the crazies at Fox.

In the early-50s, there were plenty of real journalists who knew that McCarthy was full of it, but who were cowed into either keeping their misgivings to themselves or even becoming cheerleaders for the witch hunt. Klein has now joined them in history as another coward who chose to retreat to the background rather than pull the plug on what he KNOWS is racist nonsense. I don't know how he looks at himself in the mirror every morning.

And when this is all over, I don't want to hear Klein tell us how he just "bided his time" and "knew this would all blow over eventually." Accessories to evil have no excuses after the fact.

      Lou Dobbs,

I've always wondered why you are not on FOX NEWS with your conservative agenda. I see through you and don't understand why you are still on CNN.

Maybe the powers that be at CNN and your radio station will listen to how the 'average American' feels about you.

I suggest we mount a campaign to have Lou Dobbs prove he is a human being. He should start by giving us all the PROOF that he is an American citizen by showing HIS BIRTH certificate. Until that time I have to regard him as having crawled out from under a rock.
