Washington, D.C. -- Today, Media Matters for America responded to the news that CNN has refused to air a Media Matters ad calling on the network to credibly address Lou Dobbs' continued promotion of birther conspiracy theories. A CNN spokesperson reportedly told the Politico, "CNN retains the right to object to any ad run by the cable operator on our network whose purpose is to attack CNN or our employees."

"This seems like the actions of a network desperate to provide cover for its primetime host rather than living up to its standard of being the most trusted name in news," said Eric Burns, president of Media Matters. "If the ad is accurate -- and we know that it is -- then there is no reason for CNN to block it from its airwaves."

BACKGROUND

Media Matters bought a week of ad time on CNN, MSNBC, and Fox News in Washington, D.C., New York, and Atlanta. As reported on The Huffington Post, "[F]ive of the six cable providers contracted for the project have informed the group that they are declining to put the spot on CNN."

The ad, which was set to air today, calls out CNN for continuing to allow Dobbs to promote racially charged conspiracy theories about the validity of President Obama's birth certificate.

In defending Dobbs' promotion of the birther conspiracy, CNN president Jon Klein has become increasingly isolated, even among members of his own network. Numerous journalists and commentators have rejected the story and exposed its racially charged subtext. CNN's Roland Martin said that the real question birthers are asking is, "How is this black guy all of the sudden running the country?" Similarly, Frank Rich of The New York Times wrote that Dobbs was playing on "escalating white fear," while the Politico's Glenn Thrush said the charges were "a proxy for racism." Shortly after Dobbs began giving renewed credibility to the conspiracy, MSNBC president Phil Griffin called the story "racist." Even conservative commentators like Bill O'Reilly and Ann Coulter have refused to dignify the accusations.

In the wake of such reactions, an Associated Press article that ran over the weekend referred to Dobbs as a "publicity nightmare" for CNN. The New York Observer has reported that Dobbs' ratings have been significantly hurt by the controversy.

During a recent interview, Klein misrepresented Dobbs' coverage of birth certificate conspiracies and suggested that Dobbs' coverage of the issue has been "legitimate." Last week, Klein told TV reporters that Dobbs' coverage of the issue has been "all about the phenomenon of doubters" -- with Klein suggesting that Dobbs has done nothing more than host discussions of why "some people doubt" that Obama is a U.S.-born citizen.

Klein is not telling the truth. Dobbs has done far more than simply ask why there are still people who doubt Obama's citizenship. He has legitimized their racially charged conspiracy theories by demanding that Obama produce further documentation -- all to prove something that Klein himself acknowledges is beyond doubt.

CNN is, of course, not obligated to run ads they don't want to run; that much is settled. On the other hand, they're also not entitled to take MMfA's money and run, so the first question here is whether CNN has repaid MMfA the money paid to run the ad.

CNN is also being overtly cowardly by covering for Dobbs even though his positions have been justly ridiculed. They've also engaged in the falsehood, as stated above, that Dobbs was merely reporting on the birthers rather than promoting the birthers. When a news outlet provably lies, as has CNN, then that organization has no credibility whatsoever on any issue...

What purpose does this serve? I for one would like to see Mr. Dobbs side of the story. For years the media has distorted the truth about black people. Even now the media shows the American people what they want them to see. If President Obama was not President already they would have found some way to run this and try to discredit him. So what is Mr. Dobbs trying to do spread hate among people that are tired of lies and being kept in the dark about the truth. The American people don't have much time to hate. We are too busy trying to keep our jobs and homes. This is not the first time any News media has lied. But this maybe one of the first times that it is being addressed; Even on a small scale.

Lou Dobbs has at least shown that he is still a JOURNALIST! While most of the media networks offer ridicule for even bringing up the question of eligibility, Lou has noted the fact that Barak Obama has REFUSED to release his LONG FORM birth certificate (the only one that will prove an american birth, NOT the "certification of live birth" sometimes issued to foreign births, that his campaign promoted) as well as his college records, which are rumored to indicate that he attended college with funding for FOREIGN STUDENTS.
For all of you that say the issue is "irrelevant", you simply don't understand the constitution, or you're one of those who seeks to subvert it.

It's not really a law. It would be a policy by the FCC. Obama does not support the fairness doctrine and neither does the new FCC chairman. You can now go back to your regularly scheduled trolling...

CNN understandibly does not want their own network criticized and will never facilitate such an idea. They are a corporation. They have no interest in the abstract idea of "Free Speech" (not the same as the Constitutional Right to Free Speech). They care about their own self-interest and their bottom line.

From what I have read CNN also pressured cable operators to not show dissent - which appears to have a contractual basis.

MMFA is probably better served to run the commercials on other stations. Pointing out that CNN will not air criticism of their own personalities is not really that big a deal IMO.

Secondly, I do not find the commercial all that devastating. MMFA does a better job on their own videos. The commercial properly executed can be fair and devastating at the same time. I do not see this commercial as fair or devastating. CNN is probably doing MMFA a favor by not running it.

A fair (and maybe devastating) commercial would start with a clip of the facts supporting Obama's natural born citizenship, then Dobbs saying "I believe the President is a natural born citizen" - or something like that he has said - Then show the wacko statements that seem to contradict that from Dobbs and others on the show to demonstrate the hypocrisy.

Hypocrisy is probably one of the most provocative charges that can be made against a news personality and Dobbs is indeed a hypocrite.
