Beck warns viewers against "turning violent" days before he talks about "put[ting] poison" in Pelosi's wine

Washington, DC - Today, Media Matters for America called for Fox News to immediately fire Glenn Beck after he talked about "put[ting] poison" in House Speaker Nancy Pelosi's wine. As Media Matters noted, Beck warned his viewers on August 3 that "[i]f anyone thinks that it would be a good idea to turn violent, think again," adding that "[i]f you ever hear someone thinking about or talking about turning violent, it is your patriotic duty to stop them."

"Glenn Beck talking about poisoning the speaker of the House is just the latest in a series of actions, statements, and stunts that have no place on a credible news network," said Eric Burns, president of Media Matters. "Beck himself said that it is our 'patriotic duty' to stop someone who talks about turning violent. Doesn't he deserve to be held to this same standard?"

Burns further stated: "Fox News cannot have it both ways, dialing up the hate and then pretending it's all a joke," adding, "Like all networks, Fox must be held responsible for what is said on air. And they've ducked accountability for Glenn Beck's violent rhetoric and incessant fearmongering for far too long."

Media Matters today released the video, "When Is Enough Enough?" featuring clips of Beck's racially charged, violent rhetoric.

Watch the video here: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=DL5tjGK-x-g

BACKGROUND

On the August 6 edition of Glenn Beck, during a conversation with a woman wearing a mask of Pelosi, Beck stated [emphasis added]:

BECK: So, Speaker Pelosi, I just wanted to -- you gonna drink your wine? Are you blind? Do those eyes not work? There you -- I want you to drink it now. Drink it. Drink it. Drink it.

I really just wanted to thank you for having me over here to wine country. You know, to be invited, I thought I had to be a major Democratic donor or a longtime friend of yours, which I'm not.

By the way, I put poison in your -- no, I -- I look forward to all the policy discussions that we're supposed to have -- you know, on health care, energy reform, and the economy.

Hey, is that Sean Penn over there? I know it cost me more than $30,000 to get in here, but hey. Hey, I think I see Ed Markey, the author of cap and trade, right over there.

This came days after Beck warned his viewers that it was their "patriotic duty" to "stop" anyone who is "thinking about or talking about turning violent."

Previously:

As Media Matters has repeatedly documented, Beck has a history of violent rhetoric and fearmongering.

Beck imitates Obama pouring gasoline on "average American"; says: "President Obama, why don't you just set us on fire? ... We didn't vote to lose the Republic"

But.... but.... even Glen Beck has stated that he is not a journalist!

This is all just some sick and twisted comedy routine... like all of Fox-Noise.... right??

Can't seriously be considering that we are meant to take these wacky corporate whores at all serious... are you?

It's not as if the fine teabagger folks down in Florida yesterday got any of their idea's about being uncivilized and unruly by the Fox-Noise big top clowns.... huh... do you think that?

      OMG!

I have a theory about all the retirees doing this. They are the 'silent majority' types that were disgusted by protests in the 60s and 70s. Now that their conservative 'movement' is failing, they are willing to be led into this behavior because it's their turn. That most of them have never done anything like this in their lives explains how clumsy they are. I think they really believe they have moral equivilance with the civil rights and anti war protesters of earlier decades.

Some of them may have been civil rights and anti-war protesters in their youth. Don't forget many of them became the establishment and voted for Reagan, proudly.

I can't tell you how many times people have told me of their college days demonstrating but admitted they're now grown ups. I'm ashamed of a lot of these people.

Only a complete and utter fool would consider this anything other than satirical parody, however, if you are fool enough to believe it to be a real threat, then it is your solemn duty to alert the secret service to foil this 'dithpicable plot'.

satire or not, this is far from being funny.

if letter got bashed for his jokes, beck deserves the same treatment if not worse. joking about killing anyone is never funny.

I admit I watch to keep track of what he's doing, though I totally disagree with him. I take note of who his advertisers are so as NOT to buy from them. Our church was advertising on his show and they heard from us. (Haven't seen those ads for a couple months now.) I hope Fox knows there are people like me who watch him.

Where is Media Matters advocating Secret Service investigations? I believe they are actually referring to Fox News holding themselves to the standards that their talking heads preach. Typical puffinrainbows retort - play the victim and erect a strawman argument to avoid the need to admit it is time the right takes responsibility for their violent rhetoric and incessant fearmongering. Ratings over accountability. Party over Country.

Glen Beck, as well as his followers, are not dealing with a full deck. He is a poor excuse for entertainment and should have been canceled when he went into reruns which was the second week he was on the air. People should continue to complain to Fox and their advertisers.

Many years ago, Jack Parr told a story about a W.C. and the network had kittens and he left "The Tonight Show." About 20 years later, Jimmy the Greek said some stupid racist remarks at a baseball game and he was fired. Don Imus said some stupid and racist things about some basketball players and he was fired. Glenn Beck incites sedition, makes comparisons to Nazis, fascists, communists, etc. and calls the President a racist, and threatens to poison the Speaker of the House, and it is all satire. The only reason I have not contacted Fox, is because I am afraid that Glenn would make even more of the firing than he is currently doing with his platform. I am willing to suffer through a bit more, waiting for him to do something or say something that is indisputably beyond redemption that has his audience turn him, if Fox doesn't do it first. He is a dangerous man.

Fox will not do much other than tone him down. What Fox will respond to is the companies that advertise on the show and network pulling their ads. Murdoch cannot afford it because his company lost 2 billion, mostly in his newspapers. But any revenue losses will make a difference when the major corps. stop advertising because they pay high rates.

What is the suggestion of poisoning Pelosi against the cr-p that has been aired regarding Bush, McCain, Reagan, and so on?

Most folks learn on the playground about taking "it" and dishing it out. The most tragically amusing symptom of this childhood lesson unlearned is reading a post(s) in which insults are hurled in the process of complaining about insults being hurled.

The only explanation I can conjure is that those posting such drivel are invisible. If they could actually see themselves as they are in the moment, there would be no possibility of taking oneself seriously.

What a relief THAT would be.

And you have examples of left wing media types talking about poisoning or killing Bush, Reagan et all right?

        NO. YOU. DON'T.

        Why? Because that never happened.

Again, there is nothing funny about dishing out, or talking about killing an elected leader of this country. Do you find that funny? I know I don't, no matter who the leader is. This false equivalence argument is BS as well. Name me one media figure on a prominent network (such as FoxNews) talking about killing a President, or a Supreme Court Justice, or, the Speaker of the House. Can't do it.

Beck and his followers will never accept the reason why the nation elected the first African- American president.

It is because of a white man named George W. Bush.

Many of my educated white friends who never voted for a democrat before voted for Obama this past election. Some were even conservative.

They were ashamed at the eight years of Bush non leadership and felt the country needed real change and a new direction.

They also tell me that they are proud of the start Obama has made and feel he will get the job done. They were also impressed that he has some Republicans in his administration.

Beck and Foxnoise are scared that many educated whites who voted and support Obama that were once conservative have figured out not all white people are and should be blinded by the color of a persons skin. They just want the United States to be great and respected around the world again.

Time is running out on Mr.Beck and Foxnoise. They are getting desperate.

The United States and poor uneducated white people who really want America to be great should pray that day comes soon.

Bush tried to take you guys out. Wake Up!

Obama is not the enemy. Beck and Foxnoise is!

Nobody has a right to a tv and a radio show. This has nothing to do with free speech. If he wants, he can go on every single corner of America and shout this out, be it doesn't have to be allowed on TV and or radio.

        Not a free speech issue.

There is a fundamental problem with demanding that Fox remove Beck from its programming lineup. If he is generating ratings, they simply will not do it. The only way to get him taken off the air is to strike at his advertisers. Accordingly, there should and must be a well-organized effort made to present such demands directly to the show's sponsors. (I would suggest that the same approach be taken with O'Reilly, Hannity, Limbaugh, etal.) Hitting at the revenue stream is the only thing these people understand. Anything other than that is very probably not going to work.

The two most important tools for progressives: Boycotting advertisers and focusing seriously on unseating legislators who insist on obstructing anything and everything that bears any resemblance to common decency.
