Washington, D.C. -- Today, in response to conservative host Glenn Beck encouraging his listeners to make Yom Kippur "a day of Fast and Prayer for the Republic," Media Matters for America issued the following statement:

"Yom Kippur is a day of atonement, prayer and fasting," Ari Rabin-Havt of Media Matters said. "Glenn Beck's attempt to politicize this holiest of days with his far right agenda is not only disgusting, but shows a profound disrespect for the Jewish people."

BACKGROUND:

As Media Matters noted, Beck posted the following on his Twitter page:

beck

On September 21 on his radio show, Beck elaborated:

BECK: By the way, I just thought I would put this out there, and what you do with it is your own business. But, this weekend, I put out a tweet on Twitter that September 28th is the Day of Atonement for the Jewish faith, and I thought it would be a good day for all of us to fast and pray, you know. And I got this idea from Thomas Jefferson. After they put together the Continental Congress, the first thing they did was put together a day -- a national day of fast and prayer, and I thought the Day of Atonement would be a good day to do it.

I thought he said we are a Christian nation . . . what's this Jewish stuff? What a freak. God, he makes me sick.

The Jewish vote for Obama was nearly double that of McCain's, so it appears as if Beck is chasing another demographic that voted democrat last year. The GOP targeted seniors, veterans, and now they are targeting Jews!

Yeah, Glenn "Jelly Dougnut" Beck is gonna choose to fast for a whole day. I guess if they'll believe in Death Panels, they're bound to believe any lie, no matter how preposterous.

What will Glenn Beck propose for December 25th? Will it be National Eat a Jelly Dougnut and Curse The Communist Obama Day?

Gee, thanks, as always, for that factually-challenged, fundamentally-dishonest, ignorant-trash perspective little fraudulent fella.

It's always nice to hear from our little turner diary readin' reptiles from the timothy mcveigh wing of the gop.

So, you're not just ignorant racist trash, you're a farcockteh, anti-Semitic schmuck, to boot. The folks back at the aryan nations compound must be so proud.

        Shalom, Schmuck.

Setting aside a day to pray for the country is fine, but co-opting Yom Kippur to do this is offensive. He has no business exploiting religious holidays for political purposes.

Bringing up Rev. Wright is just an attempt to change the subject. The stated mission of Media Matters is "monitoring, analyzing, and correcting conservative misinformation in the U.S. media." There are similar groups such as NewsBusters for correcting liberal misinformation. Your implication that Media Matters should be even-handed in criticizing both the left and the right is either dishonest or naive.

          Cuttle,

The ProudOne, my favorite poster here at MMFA, is everything you say he is and more.
For the very Religious man, Glenn Back to suggest an entire country use a very important religious day to be political is disgraceful. First, he uses 9/11 to promote a political cause now a Holiday Day.

He could tell his sheep that Jesus is very considerate by being born on Christmas and dying on Easter so they could remember those important moments. And they would believe him.

Fox knows they are losing the battle.

        Oh the stupidity!!!!!:<

Imagine trying to turn a national tragedy in to a day of service and remembrance. What kind of partisan scum would fight against that? Oh yeah, we already know the answer to that, don't we?

Imagine Obama suggested we go out on Christmas Day and help the homeless and hungry? Celebrate the birth of Christ by following his example? What kind of hue and cry would go up from the right for politicizing this most holy of days? And this is why Repugnicans are disgusting hypocrites and conservatives their brainless flock.

If proudconservative can compare Beck's influence with Wright's with a straight face, then he or she is has a perfect grasp of GOP logic. Good for you!

This is more than offensive. As Jew, I'm outraged that he would use this most holy day to advance his "cause".

BTW, HumblePie - best wishes to you and your family for the coming new year, and a blessed Yom Kippur. Shalom. (I'm not Jewish myself, but I have a deep respect for all those who follow the Jewish faith. It comes from growing up back in the '50s and '60s with a lot of kids whose parents survived Hitler's death camps.)

I can't wait to see what sick, twisted, pathetic, sort of "patriotic" pogrom becko's got planned for 11/9 to commemorate Kristallnacht for his little aryan nations nitwits.

Ya gotta love how these Tennessee Taliban kukluxkrishtins just love Israel but hate Jews.

More than offensive? A tweet? How about putting a crucifix in a jar of urine and calling it art? That, while IMHO, was more than a tweet, but hardly more than offensive. The offense came when my tax dollars funded it through the NEA.

What a ridiculous and unanalagous comparison. Talk about a reach.
You are so angry about an art exhibit fifteen years ago because it wasted your tax dollars. Boo freakin' Hoo
Where were you for the last 8 1/2 years?

What was he trying to do here? Make Yom Kippur all about himself and his "movement"?

Lying, thieving, duplicitous, hijacking biscuit eater.
What a way to insult the culture of other Americans. First, hijack and distort the meaning of September 11. Next, hijack and distort the meaning of Yom Kippur.
Becky Boy, you are free to leave America whenever you get ready since it seems your main goal is to destroy it. We'll have a national party when you leave.

Beck is disgusting and just has no conscious whatsoever. To politicize and mock someone's religion is beyond reprehensible. He and his soulless spirit should rot in a distant place that's very very hot.

Well, Mr. Beck does have a great deal to atone for.
There are other actions that are also called for on Yom Kippur as we pray to God for forgiveness of our transgressions against other people as well as trangression against God.
Mr. Beck would be well served, as would we all to observe the following
During this period Jews are encouraged to seek out anyone they may have offended and to sincerely request forgiveness so that the New Year can begin with a clean slate. If the first request for forgiveness is rebuffed, one should ask for forgiveness at least two more times, at which point the person whose forgiveness is being sought should grant the request. The rabbis thought it was cruel for anyone to withhold their forgiveness for offenses

On September 29th Beck will talk about how moved he was by the overwhelming support of Jewish Americans for his day of fast and prayer. (Never mind that Beckheads would never be caught inside a synagogue without a can of paint.)

      Why Sept. 28th?

Why not any other day? Sept. 29th? Sept. 27th?

Next thing you know, Glenn Beck will start claiming he is Jewish, and that's the real reason he was motivated.
