Washington, D.C. - Today, Media Matters for America responded to the latest example of the politically expedient, backwards patriotism of the right-wing media. Numerous conservative media figures have already roundly denounced the awarding of the Nobel Peace Prize to President Obama, with one, RedState.com founder Erick Erickson, claiming that the decision was the result of "affirmative action."

"The right-wing media have once again demonstrated their true colors," said Eric Burns, President of Media Matters. "They want Obama to fail, and as long as he is president, they seem to want America to fail, too."

"Does the right care that the Taliban shares their sentiments on this story?" Burns asked.

Media Matters also released a video titled, "Rooting Against America: Nobel Peace Prize Edition," comparing right-wing responses to the awarding of the Nobel Peace Prize to President Obama and to the elimination of Chicago's Olympic bid:

BACKGROUND

Following the announcement that President Obama had been awarded the Nobel Peace Prize, conservative media figures attacked the decision.

Their responses followed last week's triumphant right-wing media reaction to the news that Chicago had lost its bid to host the 2016 Olympic Games.

RedState's Erickson smears Obama's Nobel Peace Prize as "an affirmative action quota"

Kilmeade asks whether Obama delayed decision on Afghanistan troop request in order to receive Nobel Peace Prize

FNC's Gallagher uses Obama's Nobel Prize win to bring back the "apology tour"

FURTHER BACKGROUND

Following the news that Chicago had been eliminated from consideration by the International Olympic Committee, Erickson wrote a blog post deriding the idea that President Obama had improved America's global image, stating, "So much for improving America's standing in the world, Barry O."

However, in explaining its decision, the Nobel Committee emphasized Obama's diplomatic efforts on behalf of international diplomacy and cooperation.

"Only very rarely has a person to the same extent as Obama captured the world's attention and given its people hope for a better future," the committee wrote. "His diplomacy is founded in the concept that those who are to lead the world must do so on the basis of values and attitudes that are shared by the majority of the world's population."

TALIBAN RESPONSE

Zabihullah Mujahid, a spokesman for the Taliban, also provided a statement in reaction to the Nobel news.

"We condemn the award of the Nobel Peace Prize for Obama," Mujahid said.

Way to go Democrats for telling it like it is:

"Republicans cheered when America failed to land the Olympics and now they are criticizing the President of the United States for receiving the Nobel Peace prize - an award he did not seek but that is nonetheless an honor in which every American can take great pride - unless of course you are the Republican Party. The 2009 version of the Republican Party has no boundaries, has no shame and has proved that they will put politics above patriotism at every turn. It's no wonder only 20 percent of Americans admit to being Republicans anymore - it's an embarrassing label to claim."

What did he win the Nobel Peace Prize for again? Oh, right, for things he hadn't actually done yet (and still hasn't done).

Didn't the right wing media floated around the idea of Bush being nominated for a Nobel Prize few years ago? To answer the conservative latest talking point let's list George W.Bush's long line of accomplishments:
        1. turning surplus into debt
        2. biggest terrorist attack to happen on American soil
3.letting the guy that mastermind the attack to go
4.throwing away tax payers' money and soldiers lives in Iraq
        5.limiting civil liberties
        6. making torture legal
        7. alienating half or most of America's allies
        8. stealing two elections

I wish the right have the balls to say what they truly feel "We hate that N-word president and we want that N-word to fail" because you guys look petty you cheered when the USA lost its bid to host the Olympics and now whining about the president winning the Nobel Prize.

As for Rush, I'm sure if there's a award for messing with little boys from the Dominican Republic no one is going to argue Rush didn't earn that award.

What has he done to receive this? Maybe this garnered him the accolade.

With that said, will this impact decisions he has to make about making war against islamic terrorists? Will this preclude him from standing firm against Iran and their surrogates in Gaza? If there was clear evidence that he accomplished anything then no one would have to ask the questions or note the possibilities queried above.

But hey, who wouldn't want to be considered an equal to the likes of Yessir Airafat? HE certainly earned the street cred of someone loving peace! {:>

Obviously NOT paying attention or very short-term memories. President Obama has done more in the name of Diplomacy in 8 months than the Bush Administration had done in 8 YEARS. In the G20 summit a few months ago when a bitter disagreement between th...e French and Chinese presidents threaten to cause both of them to leave early, Obama personally spoke to Sarkozy and Jintao individually to come back and try again. They did and they have been communicating frequently ever since. Other world leaders flocked to open new dialogue with America thanks to President Obama. Venezuelan president Chavez wants to be friends with Obama ( Should we shun people whom we don't agree with just for the sake of putting them in their place? Tried that policy with Ambassador Bolton : FAIL ) The Russian president, Medvedev, eagerly making open communications and agreements with the United States. Even Iran and North Korea, are maintaining diplomatic talks instead of the 'saber-rattling' defiance. America's place in the world has more meaning these days than ever before.
Obviously there a lot to be done in this sorry state of our planet Earth. But remember how people AROUND the world were practically dancing in the streets when he won? Do you think maybe they finally felt hope that America was going to be part of the world community again instead of 'If you're not with us, then you're with with the enemy' arrogance?
Well done Mister President. Don't stop now!

So criticizing Obama's win of the Nobel Peace Prize means that you are "rooting against America"? Come on. You pro-Obama groups like Media Matters and MSNBC need to stop calling people racists and un-American just because they criticize Obama. It's unfair and it's wrong.

Sorry, but they get called that because they are racists and un-american, not because they are criticizing obama. I have yet to hear a valid criticism of his policies. When you can make a claim without telling lies and blowing it out of proportion, let us know and then we can try to take you seriously...

It's called using right wing logic against the right wing I remember during the Bush regime conservatives went after the Dixie Chicks for a one comment, ironically Fox News went after the (real grassroots)anti-war movement every chance they got and folks like Cindy Sheehan was public enemy number one in the eyes of the right.

Jump ahead when the office of the president changes political party hands, if you call the president a liar on national tv you become a hero to those who tried to ruin the careers of those who were critical of Bush, Fox News who a few years ago marginalized the anti war movement as anti America, pro terrorist movement has now become co-sponsors to the largest fake anti-government movement in recent memory.. Not only has Fox News promote the faux tea party protest they helped the town-hall zombies by listing dates and times of Democratic ONLY town-hall events.

These two events of losing a chance to host the summer games and Obama winning the Nobel prize has once again highlighted the hypocrisy of those on the right when Bush was president media street walkers like Michelle Malkin claimed liberals and Democrats hated Bush so much they cheered when the causalities numbers from Iraq would come in, even tho the right didn't have any proof to back up that claim.. So with that said memo to the Chicago White Sox don't win the World Series between next year and 2016 because some Republican congress person will try to have them removed from Major League Baseball or Glenn Beck will tell them give up their World Series title to his 9.12 movement.

There may be a day when the President deserves this award, but to be nominated after 2 weeks in office (at the most), I feel "cheapens" the award. There are a lot of people that have put forth the same thoughts as included in his "groundbreaking" initatives over the years without so much as a nod from a Nobel nominator. Why have they been unworthy of the prize and a neophyte is awarded it?

It's not unprecedented for this award to be given as a means of propelling the sorts of peace initiatives Obama talked about during his campaign, and has put in place since. He's done a number of things. For anyone paying attention, they're aware of what these are and I won't delineate them now.

But to get back to my original point, the Nobel people give this award strategically. For instance they gave it to Desmond Tutu in 1984, and abolishing apartheid wasn't acheived until 1994.

So I think the president will use this as a launching pad of sorts, as a way to build momentum for causes that almost everybody can agree on, save for hard rightys who want him to fail on the world stage, as well as in America.

Now what he needs to do is use this use the goodwill generated to produce concrete results.

Just seems like another example of the lack of civility that political discouse in our country has descended to. People are entitled to disagree with the decision of the Nobel Coommittee, but it is just plain bad manners to vilify President Obama over that dissention. The naysayers are like Kayne West grabbing that microphone from Taylor Swift....pure & simple bad form/behavior. It does seem early in his presidency, but I feel proud to be an American that the committee thought enough of our President to honor him in this way.

Here's a question for you good folks. What did President Obama do in his first two weeks as President that merited such recognition? I wonder who will answer this difficult question.
Besides this question there's no damage to America and some possibility that this award might help further some American foreign policy agenda. You have to expect commentary from President Obama's political adversaries. It is news after all.
