September 7, 2006 (Washington, DC) - We applaud Scholastic's decision to pull flawed and misleading educational materials regarding 9-11 and the war on terror and to disassociate themselves from ABC's upcoming dramatic miniseries, "The Path to 9-11," in response to questions raised by Media Matters and others (here, here, and here).
The events of September 11, 2001 are a sensitive and important part of our history. It is unfortunate that ABC has chosen to broadcast such a flawed account of those events - but it is also a reminder that all Americans have a responsibility to think critically about the information they receive from the media.
Media Matters will review Scholastic's new materials as soon as they are available. We hope that they will prove helpful in providing our students with the tools they need to apply independent, critical thought and analysis to the news and entertainment they consume.
