MSNBC website claimed registration deadlines have passed -- even for states that allow Election Day registration

Under the headline "Hardball HORSERACE.MSNBC.COM Election Scorecard" (after the MSNBC program Hardball with Chris Matthews), the MSNBC website currently features an interactive module intended to inform voters anywhere in the United States of the voter registration deadlines and requirements for their state. But when Media Matters for America consulted HORSERACE.MSNBC.COM at 4 p.m. ET on November 2, the module falsely reported that registration was closed for several states that legally allow registration on Election Day.

Six states allow Election Day registration: Idaho, Maine, Minnesota, New Hampshire, Wisconsin, and Wyoming. But when MMFA followed the links purporting to show information for each of those states on the MSNBC page, the module displayed the message: “The registration deadline has passed for your state.”

MSNBC bills the HORSERACE.MSNBC.COM Web page as “your daily scorecard on the presidential campaign.”
