On the October 11 edition of Fox News' Hannity & Colmes, nationally syndicated radio host Laura Ingraham misleadlingly suggested that White House senior adviser Karl Rove could not have "outed" CIA operative Valerie Plame as an undercover agent because her identity was already known after she appeared "in Vanity Fair with her scarf and her sunglasses on." In fact, syndicated columnist Robert D. Novak -- citing two "senior administration officials," one of whom reportedly was Rove -- publicly broke Plame's cover in his July 14, 2003, column. But as Media Matters for America has noted, Plame appeared in the January 2004 edition of Vanity Fair. The photograph of Plame "with her scarf and her sunglasses on" was taken on November 18, 2003.

After Novak's column was published, multiple press accounts reported that Plame was an undercover CIA operative.

From the October 11 edition of Fox News' Hannity & Colmes:

SEAN HANNITY (co-host): You know what it seems to me -- this is how I see your [Democratic] party. I see your party -- if anyone in our country stubs their toe, it's George Bush's fault. If there's a bee sting, you know, it's George Bush's fault. If you get a hangover, it's George Bush's fault. You have no vision for national security, homeland security, for the economy. All you guys want to do is bash Republicans. Good luck, if that's all you got.

KIRSTEN POWERS (Fox News contributor and Democratic strategist): Well, Sean, you know, your party is the party of personal responsibility.

HANNITY: Absolutely.

POWERS: Karl Rove is personally responsible for what he did.

HANNITY: What did he do?

POWERS: Which is that he outed Valerie Plame. Now, you're going to argue --

[crosstalk]

HANNITY: That's an allegation. That is a false allegation.

[...]

ALAN COLMES (co-host): I want to know why Karl Rove, it was said by his attorney, [Robert] Luskin, back in July, "has shared everything he knows with a special prosecutor," and why he is now, then, testifying again? Why did [White House press secretary] Scott McClellan say, "If anybody was involved in this, they'd no longer be in the administration"? And then the next day, [President] Bush said, "If anybody leaked classified information," and then they said, "If anybody committed a crime." They keep changing the goal posts here. Why is that, Laura?

INGRAHAM: I don't necessarily think they're changing the goal posts. But I can probably talk about why [special prosecutor] Patrick Fitzgerald might be calling him back. I mean, he might be calling Karl Rove back because Fitzgerald has learned more information that might either conflict with something that Rove said to him earlier or might add to something Rove said, and he wants to ask him about it.

That's how grand juries operate. And I don't think it's necessarily good news for Karl Rove that he's been called back for a fourth time. But I don't think you conclude anything from that, either.

I think for Kirsten to say he's outed Valerie Plame -- Valerie Plame, the last time I checked out with her, she was on the -- in Valerie -- in Vanity Fair with her scarf and her sunglasses on.

[laughter]

HANNITY: All right, Laura, by the way --

INGRAHAM: That was a great picture.

HANNITY: -- welcome back. We're glad you're feeling better.

IMO, this is reaching and just another drip into the pool of noise. It is possible that Ingraham meant the most recent time at which she saw Plame was on VF. The dates of the photograph and of the Vanity Fair release don't add to this argument, as Ingraham says she saw the scarf picture in VF.

I saw the VF article in which Plame appeared. Her core features were indistinguishable. The sunglasses were nearly opaque and the scarf entirely covered her hair. The sunglasses were also quite large.

In addition, this SHOULD be quite obvious, her appearance came AFTER she was outed in NoFacts' column, in fact five moths after. Plame would NEVER have done this before her outing.

Ingraham, you are a fool, albeit a pretty one.

About Hannity's comment that Democrats have no agenda. Well, maybe the LEADERSHIP of the Democratic party cannot put forth a coherent agenda beacuse they have been whipped into submission due to their own agreements on many fronts with the GOP's policies, but that certainly does NOT mean that there are not many EXCELLENT ideas coming from the grassroots and many leftist publications. The modern left has had an agenda for MANY decades. It was never fully implemented. Now the left is trying to undo the thirty years of pro-corporate, anti-family legislation and regulations that the conservatives have installed.

The Republicans have no coherent agenda either. Sure, they have one, but it defies common sense and is doing nothing beneficial for the vast majority of ordinary Americans. The GOP agenda is ripe with contradictions, so I find it funny that Hannity would be proud to associate himself with that movement.

Those Republican policies really worked out well for everyone.

"More say Bush’s policies made things worse People were inclined to say Bush’s policies have made things worse on a wide range of issues such as the federal budget deficit, the gap between rich and poor, health care, the economy, relations with U.S. allies, the tax system and education."

I forgot to add this section. It's just for Carramba, Kenkong and the gang.

          +++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++

"Seven in 10 said they want the next president to offer policies and programs that are different from the Bush administration’s.

Only half said they wanted the next president to offer different policies in 2000, at the end of the Clinton presidency. By a 2-1 margin, people said the Bush administration has had a negative impact on politics and the way government works."

If no crime was committed, and Plame "outed" herself as an agent, why is there an ongoing investigation? Why did Rove just get called back to testify for the fourth time? for tea and crumpets?

      The right's desperation is obvious.

The "nothing to see here" argument is not going to work when Rove and/or Libby, or even Cheney or Bush himself are indicted in the Plame case, just like the "prosecutor is a Democrat" argument will not work in the Tom Delay case. It will be 3 for 3 if Frist is indicted for insider trading and obstruction of justice.

I think that MMFA has, in this case, mischaracterized Ingraham's remark. Right wingers like to mention the fact that the Wilsons appeared in Vanity fair because it paints them as darlings of the liberal elite media, not to prove that Valerie "outed herself". The purpose is to link the Wilsons to their viewers' constantly reinforced notion of an untrustwothy liberal media/entertainment establishment. It's like this: Vanity Fair BAD. Wilsons in Vanity Fair. Wilsons BAD.

This certainly seems to me to at least imply that Valerie outed herself in the Vanity fair article, if not why juxtapose the reference to the VF article with her saing I think for Kersten to say he's (Rove) outed her. The inferrence seems obvious.

She outed herself. Christ the right is reaching. The next thing they'll say is Plame leaked her identity to Novak. "No, go ahead Rob ruin my career and place others in danger." Please. This is the same group that promised honesty and integrity in government. Since Lincoln the GOP has had the honesty and integrity of an orgainzed crime family -- saying that let me apologize to organized crime, I don't think they would do some of the things the GOP has done.

        lol. I like it. :)

The "conservative" right spends all it's time blaming / pointing fingers, and passing laws in the middle of the night when media coverage is else where.

Man! I can't stand Hannity and his overbearing BS.

Can someone please tell Hannity that the "everyone blames bush if they have a hangover or get bee sting joke is not working he's been repeating the same joke over and over again...We are not suppose to blame the man running the country when its not being run properly? Funny how Republicans STILL blame Clinton for everything that ever goes wrong in this universe and he's not even the president anymore. They would go so far as to even continue to blame terrorism on clintons administration because of some book former FBI director wrote about not being able to concentrate on terrorism because of the clinton scandals(as if there are only 8 guys working in the FBI). How about the fact that Karl Rove shouldnt be talking about ANYTHING having to do with classified national security issues to a journalist...

I'm doing something I've always said I wouldn't do- namely respond to a right wing smear -- When Laura suggests Plame was already "out" she ignores the fact that a mere picture doesn't divulge her occupation or employer-- Why then does the right ignore that our own White house endangered the intel gathering organization that is charged with a key element of protecting America? Fools- anything goes for political gain-- In Laura's case for monetary gain!!

when people complain about posts deleted that are on subject, i have an example. a post by mdprime is the first post on this thread. i replied to that post and he and i replied back and forth a couple of times and someone else had attached a reply. it was all totally on subject, no namecalling. now everything is deleted but the original post. i had replied a couple weeks ago to someone on the george will global-warming hurricane thread. i disagreed but he was talking about hurricane strength and so was i. so i really do wonder does anyone read the flags or is it just an automatic deletion.

I have had similar problems. So what if the posts are off-topic (not that your's were)? I think MMFA should be happy that they have a place for good discussion.
