Savage "renamed" Brokeback Mountain "Bareback Mounting"

SUMMARY: Michael Savage repeatedly characterized Brokeback Mountain, a film about a romantic relationship between two cowboys, as "Bareback Mounting."
Nationally syndicated radio host Michael Savage repeatedly characterized Brokeback Mountain (Focus Features, 2005), the award-winning film about a romantic relationship between two cowboys, as "Bareback Mounting." On the January 5 broadcast of Talk Radio Network's The Savage Nation, Savage announced that he had "renamed" the film, and played a sound clip from the film's trailer. Speaking over the trailer, Savage commented, "They look really cute in those chaps, huh?" adding, "These people don't stop with their salesmanship for this." Savage later called the film "disgusting," citing it as an example of "[t]he dementia of Hollywood." He stated: "Every movie is about a sexual deviant, or a pervert, or about somebody who hates America, or a corrupt businessman." He also commented that "they're highly recommending" Transamerica (Weinstein Company, 2005) -- a film about a pre-operative male-to-female transsexual -- "because it's about transvestia."
Savage repeated his characterization of Brokeback Mountain during his January 17 broadcast, also referring to the film as "Bareback Mountain." He stated: "[I]t is true the pink hand of Hollywood is in total control and that all stops were removed in order to push the homosexually themed films." He complained that although Hoodwinked (Weinstein Company, 2005) -- an animated film about the fairytale of Little Red Riding Hood -- "was the number one grossing film over the four-day Martin Luther King Jr. holiday. It grossed [$]16.6 million, while "Bareback Mounting" only grossed $7 million. ... all you hear about is Bareback Mountain! Bareback Mountain! ... Transvestia! Transvestia!" He stated: "[I]t's a lie! The people in America have voted. And they voted, and they said: 'We don't want your vile filth.' " While Hoodwinked did earn more than Brokeback Mountain that weekend, however, it also appeared on far more screens -- 2,394 for Hoodwinked vs. 683 for Brokeback Mountain.
Savage formerly hosted a television program on MSNBC but was fired after he called a caller a "sodomite" and told him to "get AIDS and die."
From the January 5 broadcast of Talk Radio Network's The Savage Nation:
SAVAGE: What's a SAG [Screen Actors' Guild] nominee? What's S-A-G? What does that mean? I don't know what SAG means. Films? Screen Actors' Guild. Yeah, OK. It should be called the G-A-S nominees, not the SAGs. Brokeback Mountain, which I've renamed "Bareback Mounting." Transamerica, which is a movie that they're highly recommending because it's about transvestia. The society is sick. It's a sick society. It's demented. And the people themselves understand that Hollywood is the source of much of the social disease, and they want nothing to do with it. Yet, they continue to put out this, this refuse in the sewer pipe. And then, they give themselves awards. So, we can talk about that. In fact, we have the -- the trailer, if you want to call it that. I hate using the word, because that also has negative connotations. But even the word "trailer" has to be rethought. We have the trailer for "Bareback Mounting." Let's hear it.
[begin sound clip]
SAVAGE: They look really cute in those chaps, huh? Next, they'll bring in his mom. Oh, the music is so sappy. God! These people don't stop with their salesmanship for this. This is the movie, or what? Am I listening to something else? Was there a split in the tape? What, are they doing it now, somewhere? Is that what the music is supposed to be? Get in here if you want a job? OK, turn it off already.
[end sound clip]
SAVAGE: It's disgusting. You get the picture? You understand what I'm saying? The dementia of Hollywood. They don't know why their revenue is down. They don't make one positive movie about America. Not one positive movie about the military. Not one positive movie about business people. Not one positive movie about teachers. Not one positive movie about a scientist. Every movie is about a sexual deviant, or a pervert, or about somebody who hates America, or a corrupt businessman. And they wonder why you're not lining up to go to the movie theater.
From the January 17 broadcast of Talk Radio Network's The Savage Nation:
SAVAGE: Now, it is true that the pink hand of Hollywood is in total control and that all stops were removed in order to push the homosexually themed films. But, that's not the whole story. The real story is that despite the fact that the pink hands of Hollywood pulled the levers to make certain that "Bareback Mountain" and such other trife (sic) -- tripe -- other garbage, filth, would be jammed down our throats, the real story is the fact that a movie that was not promoted at all named Hoodwinked was the big winner. Hoodwinked was the number one grossing film over the four-day Martin Luther King Jr. holiday. It grossed [$]16.6 million, while "Bareback Mounting" only grossed $7 million dollars. And yet, all you hear about is "Bareback Mountain," "Bareback Mountain," "Bareback Mountain," "Bareback Mountain," "Shmareback (ph) Mountain," Transvestia, Transvestia! It's nonsense. It's a lie! The people in America have voted. And they voted, and they said: "We don't want your vile filth."

Far be it from me to defend Michael Savage, who obviously meant this comment as a slur against homosexuals, but Marc Maron, of the recently cancelled Air America show Morning Sedition made a simliar comment on his show on December 14th 2005. (Working title of Brokeback Mountain is Bareback Mountain) As I said, Savage is being hateful, versus Maron's humor, but I suppose it should be mentioned at least as a comparison.
I still get baffled to this day that people with no medical or psychological credibility behind them get off on spouting such hateful bigotry like this clown. How DARE people like him say such things that condemn other people? What right does he think he has to proclaim homosexuality a deviancy and filth?
I certainly hope that most people see a person like him as what he really is. A petty bigot that has a heart full of bile and no compassion, understanding and especially credibility.
Anytime someone broadly proclaims an entire group of people as disgusting and deviant as if they were some kind of all knowing prophet, they do nothing but show how small-minded and insignificant they are in the grand scheme of things and they are in for the biggest surprise of their life when one day they realize that they are made up of an overwhelming delusion of grandeur. Even if it takes their deathbed, most will one day understand that they are no better than anyone else and certainly no more special. The truly foolish won't ever understand because when they die their last chance at existence will be gone and they won't even know what they wasted. What a shame.
Michael Weiner?
See, two can play that game.
PS: the "pink hand of hollywood"...that's a new one. Cute. Nonsense, but cute.
you probably shouldn't talk like them.
Repub in the closet
i used to not pay attention to those who would say 'he doth protest too much...', and when i was younger, i was actually a little offended, being a heterosexual male myself. no longer. i've now lived long enough to see the truth of this in many circumstances. these ruthugs nowadays are so repressed and miserable, it's unbelievable, and they deserve every minute of it. as these guys rail against the 'disgusting Hollywood homosexual agenda', all i can think is, we're gonna see them outted in some upcoming tabloid, and they will break down in some pseudo-Falwell type moment. coming soon.....
ever notice how many times that phrase comes up with these conservatives? or the gay agenda is being "forced" on us. what, somebody's got you pinned to the mattress? or those "special rights"? the ones everyone else already has.
Savage neglects to mention that Brokeback has now earned over $30 million during a slow rollout across the country and is on less than a quarter of the screens compared to what the average movie currently is. It's per-screen avg. is $11,ooo, way more than that of ANY movie currently out. They're fillin' the theaters and makin' money at a steady clip. Very smart marketing....Golden Globe wins and now a few weeks before the Oscars and of course all that lovely free press because of all the "controversy". The movie has legs.
Let me state up front that I don't consider myself a homophobe.
Let me ALSO mention that I'd only vaguely heard of Savage BEFORE I started posting here. The guy obviously has made some controversial remarks, BUT then again so have a host of other radio personalities from BOTH sides of the political spectrum.
Hollywood often latches onto "trends" or creates them. Nothing new there. Are they pushing a "Gay agenda"? Maybe, maybe not. I think if you look back you'd find a flurry of "Gay" themed movies over the past 20-30 years...some more successful than others.
I don't plan on seeing Brokeback Mountain. But it has NOTHING to do with it being a Gay love story. I'd just rather watch a good comedy, a murder suspense thriller, a mafia/mob movie or a movie dealing with political intrigue. BTW one of my favorite movies is a comedy with a "Gay" theme-- The Birdcage w/ Robin Williams, Nathan Lane & Gene Hackman...funny as hell.
Savage feels Hollywood has an "agenda" here, and he's entitled to state his opinion...I'm certain that if Hollywood was cranking out pro-war movies SOME on the Left would be questioning IF Hollywood had an agenda here too.

Good rational take on this and incidentally, The Birdcage is also one of my alltime favorite movies too! Everytime I see it coming on, I have to watch it, it's hilarious and the characters are very likeable as human beings, regardless of their lifestyle. I was in no way offended by the gay butlers "guatamaleness!!"
I keep hearing how Hollywood has an "agenda." I think their only agenda is to make money and controversy sells tickets. What could be more controvesial than two macho cowboys in love? The Passion of the Christ did well for the same reason. The cowboys are getting rave reviews, so I may see it a some point. By the way, the critics were right about the Passion, it was quite awful and I love biblical themed movies, I've probably seen them all. Why would anyone make a two hour movie of a scurging? And why did my so many of my fellow Christians enjoy watching it? Questions for the ages.
"Transvestia"?
The word "trailer" has "negative connotations" and needs to be "rethought"? Who is this clown?
Considering the mindset of Amerikanischer Realkultur Zealots and True Believers such as Michael Savage as want us to regard Hollywood and New York as having "no regard for Traditional Cultural Values" that, somehow (in the conservative Weltanschauung) Branson, MO epitomises--or, as Cal Thomas once called it, "nutritious patriotism"--we're expected to say "yes."
But then again ... perhaps it was time to start questioning just how far conservative propaganda can be played up (howbeit discreetly) in certain of the shows down Branson way.
The Micheal Weiner, (oops i meant Savage) show would be halarious it it were presented as a comedy. my favorite part of the show is when his caller call him Dr. Savage. you could play a great drinking game that i invented. basically you listen to the Weiner Nation, and everytime Weiner mentions the title of one of his books, you drink a shot. i would caution anyone who attemps this game, to limit the play time to a fifteen minute segment, comsidering the fact that he rarely goes more than thirty seconds without trying to sell one of his asinine books. MMFA should also draw attention to the fact that he calls for the homeless being sent to work camps, basically his whole show is nothing but trash
Hoodwinked isn't vile filth?
Brokeback Mountain is a LOVE story, for cryin' out loud.
There are so many movies that are love stories involving a man and a woman. In a good many of them, the two have sex. Does anyone care? Maybe some do, but their complaints aren't very loud.
Now we have a love story that happens to be between two men. And all we hear from the likes of Savage are complaints about the vile, perverted, deviant sex!
