Domenech on federal judges' upholding abortion rights: "In the past 30 years, how many innocent lives has the KKK ended? How about the Judiciary?"

SUMMARY: Washingtonpost.com's newly hired Republican blogger Ben Domenech, in a post about the Supreme Court on his previous weblog, wrote that "[t]he worst black-robed men and women are worse then [sic] the KKK." He also asked rhetorically: "In the past 30 years, how many innocent lives has the KKK ended? How about the Judiciary?"

Following the Washington Post's recent hiring of Republican activist Ben Domenech to launch the Red America weblog on washingtonpost.com, Media Matters for America has begun a review of some of Domenech's more interesting comments posted on Redstate.com, a partisan Republican blog he helped establish, and other sites. As we noted earlier today -- March 22 -- Domenech recently referred to Coretta Scott King as a "communist." Our ongoing review has also uncovered the following quote from Domenech, under his reported pseudonym "Augustine," in which he was apparently referring to the upholding of a woman's right to an abortion by the federal courts: "In the past 30 years, how many innocent lives has the KKK ended? How about the Judiciary?"

This comment followed an earlier remark he made in same thread on Redstate.com. In response to a RedState.com diarist who cited James Dobson's comparison of the Supreme Court to the KKK (documented by Media Matters here), Domenech wrote:

Actually, Dobson's soft-pedaling it. The worst black-robed men and women are worse then [sic] the KKK, and not just because they have the authority of the state behind them. They don't even use the vile pretense of skin color -- they dismiss the value of all unborn lives, not just the lives of ethnic minorities.

On Redstate.com, Domenech also has:

  • Called a pro-choice poster "a pathetic little Kossack."
  • Agreed with a commenter who called Washington Post columnist Dan Froomkin "an embarrassment to the saner heads at the paper."
  • Posted portions of an article by First Things magazine editor-in-chief Richard John Neuhaus. In the passage, Neuhaus cited the "astonishingly inordinate incidence of crimes committed by young male blacks and the equally inordinate incidence of abortions procured by black women," adding that "[i]t just happens that killing black babies has the happy result of reducing crime." Neuhaus went on to state that "those who style themselves black leaders, especially political leaders, are overwhelmingly in support of the unlimited abortion license, thus maintaining their distinction of being the only ethnic or racial leadership in history to actively collaborate in dramatically reducing the number of people they claim to lead," and that "[w]hite racists have reason to be grateful for what is sometimes still called the civil rights leadership." Domenech did not comment on Neuhaus's statements.

As Media Matters noted March 21 in response to the launch of Red America, Domenech was an editor at the conservative Regnery Publishing Inc., with extensive partisan political credentials and limited experience as a journalist. In his introductory Red America post, Domenech asserted that "unhinged elements" of the Democratic base "have dragged down the Democratic Party for too long." He also criticized the Post's editors and the "mainstream media" in general for, among other things, "treat[ing] red state Americans as pachyderms in the mist," being "slow to recognize the growth in conservative America," and failing to recognize "the greatest pro-gun movie ever," the 1984 Patrick Swayze/Charlie Sheen vehicle "Red Dawn."

Dobson and his allies try to bind their struggle to outlaw abortion (and eventually birth control) with the strugle of the civil rights movement, trying to get compassion and warriors, therefore the reference to the KKK. THey further bully judges, so to intimidate them and bias their desisions.

Dobsons suggestions that life start at conception, and an egg or cell cluster has the same rights as a born child is obscure and wrong. As soon as the heart will start to work life starts, before that it is simply dead and in its development stage. A fetus has no knowledge what so ever due to an underdeveloped nervous system and undeveloped frontal lobe. In those stages the fetus is like fetusses of other species.

I've come to the conclusion that defining the beginnning to a human life will always be arbitrary. Even an unfertilized egg represents the possibility of life, though less probable than a fertilized egg. But regulating women's menstrual cycles would be absurd.

[link to www.devbio.com] provides what I find to be an excellent summary of the different views on this issue. That article makes clear that, scientifically speaking, as pregnancy progresses, the cells come closer and closer to representing a unique human life. Then at birth, you have it! Interestingly, religious tradition (old testament scripture and Jewish law) seems to support the idea of life starting at birth.

Of course, we know more scientifically than we did a few thousand years ago. However, that knowledge still doesn't give us a clear dividing line on "It's not human...now it is human." The standard set by Roe is arbitrary, but a seemingly reasonable compromise between the absurdity of regulating an unfertilized egg and the undeniable fact of a newborn.

as this type of commentary incites rage for our judges. Oh where is the transcript of that recent speech she made?

I can hardly believe that the Post could in any way be associated with publicizing this creep. They are further denigrating American journalism.

... is how much this Domenech character despises and loathes our Constitution.

The Judiciary is constitutional, its RULINGS are constitutional, and the checks and balances of the system are constitutional.

Yet, Domenech believes the Judiciary to be "murderers".

By what standard? Only by some "legal" determination made absent the Constitution. This is no surprise. Throughout history, men in power have stated that the LAW is THEIR DOMAIN. European Monarchs claimed the infallible hand of GOD in their rulings and edicts, which were final and unquestionable.

Domenech is thus a hopeful enabler to tyranny, and an enemy of our Constitution. Other than that, he just might be a good "loyal subject" (read peon, serf, lackey). Who knows? Igor had the "Yes, Master" thing down pat!

You are right, but technically, the power of judicial review is not constitutional. It was developed in Marbury v. Madison (1803).

You don't suppose they took off their hoods and declared themselves to be moral and the majority, the moral majority? I don't think they are the majority either now or before, just the same old terrorizing bullies that like the cobra spread their hoods to look a lot more fearsome than reality.

I didn't say that but I wish I had. Let me add that "citizen" is the highest office there is while "subjects" are just one step below worms.

They don't get it. That's perfectly clear when they say things like "free elections" insinuating that's democracy. It's the constitution that makes the democracy and it does that by empowering the people, citizens. That pack of turkeys we have sent to Washington need to be reminded that they are not our masters but rather our servants. They serve at our pleasure and not the reverse.

The way things now stand the only thing between an outright Islamic type nation and us is the judiciary. The only difference of course is that we are a "Christian Nation" waiting for the coming of the "kingdom" of God right here on earth so that everyone can be subjects. Then things will be wonderful. for those of faith only of course. The rest can go to hell. I can't help but notice that God's representatives are getting a head start with the kingdom of God already operating it in the name of God and condemning people to hell just like the dark ages. Burnings at the stake are just around the corner the way things are going.

Who exactly is this mind-numbing little man Ben Domenech?

Why would a paper (that's supposedly main-stream) hire a guy that is obviously slanted to the right? And yet is called 'liberal' by those other little-minded men over at Fox!

And since it seems that since he speaks with a racist tongue why would anyone that hopes to be taken seriously (The Post) hire this guy? (unless they have no use for credibility.....)

This freakshow Domenech must think he is really some cool, wonderful, smart guy....... starts his own website www.redamerica.com (How impressive!) he has his own column where he can spew out his useless thoughts.... Congrats!!

Kind of like Rush, Bill, and Sean on TV and radio........ these clowns like Domenech are about as useful as a brain tumor! But give them a show or column where they can spit vile, hatred, and lies and package it up like its actually news and suddenly certain segments of our society would actully believe these guys are legitimate......

But, as I have said before...... This is America, so they have a right to make complete a$$es of themselves (and they do such a good job at it too!) and money sometimes will buy you love, a job, or a politician

Women "Don't have the right to choose. The baby is seperate from them by the ambilical cord. The baby is a seprate human life. The "Bible" condems abortion. And the women who has this done will be punished by "Jersus Christ" unless she "Repents".

I will use big words so you can understand me better.

        1. A baby is a seperate human life. A fetus is different than a baby, it is not fully developed. A good analogy (which means comparing things) would be you eating an omelette. Did you kill chickens by eating it?

        2. The bible says nothing about abortion- that is a lie that you have been told and believe. If you disagree, please show me proof. Further, the Bible has no bearing on people's morality in this country, we are free to do as we wish within the boundaries of man's laws. If you want to live in a theocracy you are in the wrong country.

        3. You may want to work on the spelling of your lord and savior's name as well as re-read a textbook as to the use of quotation marks and beginning sentences with the word "and". Someone might come to the conclusion that you are one of the ignorant, back-woods bible thumpers that have endangered so many by blindly following the herd. (Totally a false assumption I'm sure)

Well, it's settled, let "Jersus" punish those and handle this issue. Don't you far, FAR right mooks believe in God? If so, you should let God, "Jersus", and the Holy Spirit spite those who get abortions. Or, unless, you far, FAR right mooks believe YOU are God? hmmmmmmm?

Will god also be punishing tobacco companies, women who smoke and our political minders in the hands these companies? Depending on who you believe up to 140,000 miscarriages occur in the every year as a result of women smoking. Are you as outraged by this as women taking control of their own bodies.

By the way, 1 in 4 Pregnancies end miscarriage ie a natural abortion. Why would god do this?

The Bible is a proved hoax. That's not to say that abortion is not a bad thing or that it should be legal even. It does say that you need a better source of information to make your judgment.

Jesus Christ is based upon a male imitating female that "would be" Pharaoh, Amenophis IV. She had a wife, one of the most famous Queens of Egypt, Nefertiti. Amenophis IV did absolutely everything Jesus is credited with including a historical "one of a kind" the "chasing of the money changers out of the temple of God" the "God of her father" the sun. She was convicted of blasphemy, prossecuted by the high priest when the real Pharaoh "washed his hands of her innocent blood" and executed "on the cross."

It's too long for this blog but the whole story in synopsis form is on the net at

      [link to www.hoax-buster.org]

This is a story Fox doesn't want to hear about. Thank Nature's God, the God of the United States of America, the God of liberty and justice for all, thank HER for the internet and get informed. An informed electorate is the key to democracy.

Let me first say that I think abortion should remain legal.

That being said, I always feel a little twitchy after reading through the "aren't anti-abortion Christians morons" posts that I read on this site. It is rather unfair to characterize the religous position as knuckle-dragging cro-magnons whose sole and motivating mission in life is to deprive women of autonomy in their own bodies. Where as people on this sight work with the biological definition of life which has to do with a hearbeat and brain function, they go with a theological definition of life which has to do with ensoulment. Before one calls this "the stupid" definition, note that the biological definition has some troubles too because it gets caught in a sorietes paradox where there is an undefinable x point where something moves from being an inate clump of genetic material to a valid human life. Extreme ensoulment arguments allows for no abortions under any circumstance, extreme scientific arguments can be used just as easily for infanticide as abortion.

Also I tend to think there is nothing undemocratic about People like Donach encouraging people voting their religous convictions. Its undemocratic when state tells you what religous convictions to have--but when it comes to voting the point of democracy is that you get to vote for what you want to vote for no matter how utterly silly and not grounded in anything that passes for reason your beliefs happen to be.

There is nothing in your post that I would disagree with. However, I think it is very clear that the post that was being ridiculed was written by someone who is either very ignorant or at least has a very poor grasp of the English language. If you are going to tell people that they are going to hell because they had an abortion and can't spell Jesus you are not someone that I have any respect for. I was actually hoping for a retort of some kind but it seems I will have to find my entertainment from elsewhere.
