SUMMARY: Donald Rumsfeld appeared on The Rush Limbaugh Show to discuss the growing number of retired U.S. military generals calling for his resignation, just a few weeks after Rush Limbaugh called the woman who alleged she was raped by members of Duke's lacrosse team a "ho[]." Rumsfeld and Vice President Dick Cheney have appeared on Limbaugh's show various times in recent years, despite the fact that Limbaugh has consistently used the program as a vehicle for spreading extreme, hateful speech and falsehoods.

Just weeks after radio host Rush Limbaugh called the woman who alleged she was raped by members of Duke University's lacrosse team a "ho[]," Defense Secretary Donald H. Rumsfeld appeared on the April 17 edition of The Rush Limbaugh Show to discuss the growing number of retired U.S. military generals who are calling for his resignation over his handling of the situation in Iraq.

During the interview, Rumsfeld told Limbaugh that calls for his resignation "would pass," and that "the sharper the criticism comes, sometimes the sharper the defense comes from people who don't agree with the critics." The interview marked at least the third appearance by Rumsfeld, who was also on the show on May 16, 2002, and December 16, 2005. Vice President Dick Cheney and President Bush have also appeared on Limbaugh's show, Cheney several times in recent years, despite Limbaugh's consistent use of his program as a vehicle for spreading extreme, hateful speech and falsehoods, as Media Matters for America has documented.

Limbaugh's interviews with Bush administration officials are also re-broadcast by other outlets. ABC's World News Tonight, for example, aired portions of Rumsfeld's April 17 interview on that night's broadcast -- without noting the controversial comments Limbaugh is known for. In addition, government websites routinely post transcripts of Limbaugh's radio interviews, further legitimizing his broadcast for visitors to the White House's and Defense Department's websites.

Recent Limbaugh comments that Media Matters has documented include the following:

  • On March 31, Limbaugh called alleged Duke rape victim a "ho[]."
  • On March 3, in assessing Sen. Hillary Rodham Clinton's (D-NY) presidential chances, Limbaugh stated that she "sounds like a screeching ex-wife."
  • On March 23, Limbaugh blasted three members of the Christian Peacemaker Teams, who were rescued in Iraq in a British-led military operation, stating that "these self-absorbed, self-inflated, self-important people have made this all about them." When the activists' kidnapping was first reported, Limbaugh had said: "I like any time a bunch of leftist feel-good hand-wringers are shown reality. ... I'm telling you, folks, there's a part of me that likes this."

In addition, Limbaugh has made a series of controversial comments about the Abu Ghraib prisoner abuse scandal, frequently downplaying it as "hazing" and "an out-of-control fraternity prank."

Limbaugh has also consistently smeared Democrats and others with whom he disagrees politically:

  • On July 11, 2005, Limbaugh repeatedly called Sen. Barack Obama (D-IL) "Obama Osama" and "Osama Obama." In criticizing a July 10 speech by Obama in Eatonville, Florida, Limbaugh added "Osama" to the senator's name seven times. Limbaugh justified his use of the phrase by explaining that Sen. Edward M. Kennedy (D-MA) had once done so (mistakenly).
  • On September 26, 2005, Limbaugh attacked the motivations of Cindy Sheehan in engaging in anti-war activities, stating that she is being "inculcated" and "manipulated." Limbaugh added that Sheehan "doesn't have the sense to come in out of the rain" and "doesn't have the IQ of a pencil eraser."
  • During his November 21, 2005, broadcast, Limbaugh asserted that Rep. John P. Murtha (D-PA) -- who had called for the immediate redeployment of U.S. forces from Iraq -- was "just the useful idiot of the moment."

From the April 17 broadcast of ABC's World News Tonight:

ELIZABETH VARGAS (host): The Defense Secretary Donald Rumsfeld responded today to the unprecedented chorus of retired generals publicly calling for his resignation. The generals, at least six so far, are sharply critical of how Rumsfeld's handled the war in Iraq. Rumsfeld spoke out on Rush Limbaugh's radio program.

[begin audio]

LIMBAUGH: What does it feel like to you to go through these ups and downs and to have practically the entire media jump on the case of these six generals demanding your ouster?

RUMSFELD: Well, you know, this too will pass. I think about it, and I must say, there's always two sides to these things, and the sharper the criticism comes, sometimes the sharper the defense comes from people who don't agree with the critics.

[end audio]

" The Defense Secretary Donald Rumsfeld responded today to the unprecedented chorus of retired generals publicly calling for his resignation. The generals, at least six so far, are sharply critical of how Rumsfeld's handled the war in Iraq."

Several esteemed Generals drawn from various branches of the Armed Forces, including Gen. Anthony Zinni (USMC-ret.), Maj. Gen. Paul Eaton (USA-ret.), Lt. Gen. Gregory Newbold (USMC-ret.), Lt. Gen. Paul Van Riper (USMC-ret.), Maj. Gen. Charles Swannack, Jr. (USA-ret.), Maj. Gen. John Riggs (USA-ret.), and Maj. Gen. John Batiste (USA-ret.) ......... And now an eighth in the name of Retired Marine Corps Lt. General Paul Van Riper..... ALL calling into question the leadership and competency of the Secretary of Defense and the NeoConmen for their ineptitude, arrogance and outright dismissal of what it would take in terms of troop strength, rebuilding activities and civilian control measures which would absolutely be needed to secure Iraq in the wake of " Shock and Awe"............ Fair enough .. BUT

Let US not FAIL to consider a much more valid rationale which PERHAPS remains 'under the surface' AND offers US a glimpse of what is really going on behind the scenes. Could it be THAT these same MEN who obviously honor their oath to the CONSTITUTION in much greater reverance are in FACT drawing the LINE IN THE SAND should Bush, Cheney and Rummie decide to pre-emptively launch NUKES on Iran............... which if carried through will probably initiate WW3?

The next 3-4 months, folks, Hold on to your hats!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Anyone notice that Fox News Dork Bret Bair had a report on Rumsfeld speaking out on Radio. Bair played a snippet from a radio show on the "EIB Network". You know the Excellence in Broadcasting Network. Otherwise known as the Rush LImbaugh show (Otherwise known as Lush Rimjob). Fox couldn't credit the comment to Rush Limbaugh because that would have made Rumsfeld sound suspect for only going on Lush's show. Instead Fox tries to sneak one past us. Weasels!

Why don't you come up with your own items and bring them to the table instead of asking us to debate what you heard on Rush today? Why don't you attempt to defend the comment your hero made when he called called the girl involved in the Duke case a "ho"?

You should spend some time on MMFA and read up on Rush and see how he lies and distorts the facts on a regular basis to convert people to his brand of the "truth". Stop being a ditto head i.e. I parott back what I heard on Rush today and come up with your own thoughts and ideas.

Neocommie you missed my point entirely. The point was that Fox News deosn't have the balls to state where Rummy's radio comment came from. They clandestinely reported that it was from the "EIB" Network. That's like Brittney spears going on Howard Stern and the channel reporting only that she made the comment to the King of All Media. Actually its worse because EIB is only known by dittoheads as Rush's front name for his radio program production company.

Why can't Fox News report that Rummy was on the Rush show? Is that an embarrasssment? Are cons so embarrassed by Rush that they can't mention his name or give him attribution. Answer that Mr Neocommie.

Neocommie, the reason we as Americans should be concerned for the rights of terrorists, or criminals, or anyone for that matter, is because that is one of the greatests SRENGTHS of democracy; the rights of each individual, no matter their political or moral stripe, are sacrosanct and should NEVER be infringed upon without due process.

This is what sets our nation apart from many others, that we don't imprison people on the basis of rumour and innuendo, or because they disagree with the ones in power. And unfortunately our current administration is riding rough-shod over all those high ideals; they are turning this country into the very thing they hate, an oppressive regime. Progressives realize this, and are trying like hell to force a change. But people like you, Neocommie, who get their opinions spoon-fed to them from the likes of racist idiots like Limbaugh and Bennett, are part of the problem.

Stop being part of the problem and become part of the solution; use those little grey cells inside your thick skull and INVESTIGATE the issues.

Either genuine, or just another rightwinger amusing himself.

If a rightwinger "playacting", it shows a desperation born of not wanting to discuss the issues any more, and wishing to step out of any attempts at directly defending Republicans, which is a sentiment we can all understand.

If GENUINE, Neocommie makes no sense. Coming from a "Commie" background, his hatred would be for government secretism, the political condemnation of dissent, the arrogant lawlessness of "leaders", and the warmongering ambitions.

Add to that, the wierd contention that we only have two choices: Mindless support of GW Bush, or outright Communism ... a false choice that ONLY an American rightwinger would forward.

What we have here, friends, is a TROLL.

Neocommie is probably just a dittohead who is messing with everyone here by posting his incoherent gibberish pretending to be a Russian immigrant. Playing games like this allows him to think he is clever by fooling some of you but also by avoiding debating the real issue, namely Rumsfield and the administrations incompetence. I am not quite sure though why MMFA runs a piece like this wondering why Rummy goes on Limbaugh. Both are tools for the same force and if Rummy was looking for a sympathetic ear he went to the right place.

Limbaugh has been annointed by this Administration as the only partisan national talk-show host to be heard on Armed Forces Radio.

Rummy is assured to talking "to the troops" by going on Limbaugh's show, and this has to be foremost in the Administration's "minds" these days.

The generals coming forward has shattered the GOP's longstanding claim that "the troops support our decisions". It has shattered the Bush Administration's claims that "we listen to the generals".

So Rummy thinks he needs immediate damage control, to go directly to the troops to give "HIS SIDE" of the issue, with the hopes of staving off dissention from within the ranks.

I haven't read the transcript, but I'd be astounded if the interview was not peppered with "CODE" with Rummy warning the troops that speaking out will not be tolerated. Rummy on Limbaugh is DAMAGE CONTROL directed at the troops.

"During [William F.] Buckley's campaign for Mayor of New York, The New York Times took exception to his 'slurs on Negroes,' and accused him of pandering to 'brutish instincts.' Buckley wanted to know to what brutish instincts he was appealing and The Times>/i> made answer, 'Those instincts are fear, ignorance, racial superiority, religious antagonism, contempt for the weak and afflicted, and hatred for those different from oneself.'" (emphasis mine)

      From: [link to www.columbia.edu]

(The above link also refers to Gore Vidal calling Buckely a "crypto Nazi" for you eytomologists.)

It is at times difficult to refrain from responding to another's brutishness.... But perhaps we can.

Vidal's article linked above -- penned in 1969 -- is eeriely fitting to the current political discourse on the American airewaves. (I doubt that any Rightwinger could read it in it's entirety.) Highly recommended reading.

It always amazes me to hear that top Administration officials get interviews by people like Limbaugh! If there were just one thing to prove the Fascist-ness of the current U.S. Administration it is their tendency to give interviews to the Rightwing intellectual "brutes" of the likes of Rush Limbaugh and Bill O'Reilly.

In addition, Vidal also said this about Buckley: "But in a larger sense his views are very much those of the founders of the Third Reich who regarded blacks as inferiors, undeclared war as legitimate foreign policy, and the Jews as sympathetic to international communism."

A tactic commonly used by the radical right wing fascist party, is to have their most extreme messages spread by their shills in the news media and through infotainment programming. This way they fascists are not responsible for the statements made by the looney right "entertainment" propagandists, but give credibility to them by appearing on their shows. If I didn't know better I would think that the entire gambit is being run by our own intelligence agencies.

The democrats do not seem to understand this trick, because when they wish to communicate something controversial one of them will do it him or herself, thus receiving the brunt of criticism for whatever it is. The dems do not seem to have a network of dedicated nitwits in the mainstream media to shill for them first, to test the waters.

Another deliberate technique used by the shills in the media for the Republican Party is to continually lower the level of discourse regarding important matters. (Howard Fine and Christopher Hitchens are exceptions, nevertheless neither is below ofuscating an issue, nor using more subtle methods of supporting erroneous or untenable arguments.)

The purpose of doing so has many applications. Example: to harden American's hearts against the reality of having killed over 30,000 civilian Iraqis for no justifiable or appropriate reason.

If one was looking for a reason the insurgency is so pervasive one need look no further than the above example.
