AP uncritically reported Rove's false claim that Bush's favorability ratings are in the 60s

A May 15 Associated Press article by staff writer Tom Raum reported White House senior adviser Karl Rove's assertion that President Bush's favorability ratings "are far higher than his approval ratings," even reaching "the 60s in some polls." But an examination of recent polling shows that Bush personal approval ratings have, in fact, been in the 30s and 40s in 2006, not the 60s. Furthermore, the most recent poll to find Bush's favorability rating at 60 percent or above was conducted in February 2005.

From the AP article, headlined, "Rove Blames Iraq War for Low Bush Numbers":

Presidential adviser Karl Rove blamed the war in Iraq on Monday for dragging down President Bush's job approval ratings in public opinion polls. "People like this president," Rove said. "They're just sour right now on the war."

Rove said that Bush's likeability ratings are far higher than his approval ratings. "There is a disconnect" because of the Iraq conflict, Rove told the American Enterprise Institute.

[...]

Despite low approval ratings, "I'm sanguine," Rove said. "I know our own polls."

He said that Bush's likeability, his personal approval ratings, were in the 60s in some polls. "Job approval is lower. And what that says to me is that people like him, they respect him, he's somebody they feel a connection with, but they're just sour right now on the war. And that's the way it's going to be."

But a quick check of national polls conducted in 2006 proves that Bush's favorability numbers are not nearly as high as Rove reportedly claimed:

Moreover, it has been years since these surveys have shown Bush's favorability ratings in the 60s, as Rove claimed some do currently:

As Stephen Colbert said at the WH Corr. dinner:

"But, listen, let's review the rules. Here's how it works: the president makes decisions. He's the Decider. The press secretary announces those decisions, and you people of the press type those decisions down. Make, announce, type. Just put 'em through a spell check and go home. Get to know your family again. Make love to your wife. Write that novel you got kicking around in your head. You know, the one about the intrepid Washington reporter with the courage to stand up to the administration. You know - fiction!

I wonder, why were the media cry babies so terribly unhappy with Colbert? Are they, like Rove, adverse to the truth?

Who gives a crap how "likeable" the guy is??? This is all they've got? How 'likeable'? I view this as a positive, because Rove is truly scraping the bottom of the barrel with this nonsense. Bush, Inc. has nothing else except 'good-ol-boy' likeability... screw that. Impeach these bastards.

No control of congress...and no guts by democratic congressmen. A left wing fringe howls for impeachment but liberal democrats are making noise only when they know they cannot impeach the president...to pander to the far left.

The elected democrats are spineless (thus far)... I say, elect new democrats. I'd like to believe that they are biding their time until a little closer to the midterms... but, you're probably right. Therefore, it's time for new blood with some backbone.

"left wing fringe" -- I'm sure you'd like to believe that. I don't consider myself 'fringe' by any means. If denouncing these crooks is what you call 'fringe', so be it. Right now, about 70% of the country is one or two steps away from that 'fringe'...

...a majority in congress (at least the house) is the only way to ensure s0me true oversight takes place. I'm keeping my fingers crossed.

What is Rove talking about poll numbers for? I thought Bush wasn't concerned about polls. And now Bush's wife is out there trying to discount the low polls.
