SUMMARY: Fox News' Jim Angle uncritically reported Karl Rove's assertion that President Bush's "personal approval rating is around 60 percent." In fact, recent polling shows that Bush's favorability ratings have been in the 30s and 40s in 2006, not the 60s.

On the May 15 edition of Fox News' Special Report with Brit Hume, chief White House correspondent Jim Angle uncritically reported White House senior adviser Karl Rove's assertion that President Bush's "personal approval rating is around 60 percent." But as Media Matters for America previously noted, an examination of recent polling shows that Bush's favorability ratings have, in fact, been in the 30s and 40s in 2006, not the 60s. The most recent poll to find Bush's favorability rating at 60 percent or above was conducted in February 2005.

From the May 15 edition of Fox News' Special Report with Brit Hume:

ANGLE: Karl Rove, the president's chief political adviser, said today there is no question that the war in Iraq is largely responsible for the president's low approval ratings.

ROVE [video clip]: Look, we're -- we're in a sour time, and I readily admit it. I mean, being in a middle of a war where people turn on their television sets and see brave men and women dying is not something that makes people happy and optimistic and upbeat.

ANGLE: While the president's job approval is suffering, he says the president's personal approval rating is around 60 percent. Rove says that, along with Republican stands on strong defense and complete victory in the war on terror, means Republicans will do fine in the fall elections because they stand for something.

Despite low approval ratings, "I'm sanguine," Rove said. "I know our own polls."

He said that Bush's likeability, his personal approval ratings, were in the 60s in some polls. "Job approval is lower. And what that says to me is that people like him, they respect him, he's somebody they feel a connection with, but they're just sour right now on the war. And that's the way it's going to be."

Rove spent about half an hour taking questions from the audience, including some from reporters.

      End of story.

OK, I have a simple question. Where exactly does one go to "see brave men and women dying"? Aren't they keeping the funerals and battle footage off TV?

Its got nothing to do with soldiers dying, per se. It's WHY they're dying, you lunatic! How does the term "unnecessary war" grab ya?

. . .how to read these polls. Early last week, GWB had an approval rating of 32%, later that week he came in at 29%. Add 32+29, and you've got a rock solid 61 ! If there were an election tomorrow, he'd win in a landslide!

Karl Rove seems to think that the media has been allowed to show the thousands of flagged draped coffins returning from the Middle East. I believe that Rove, Cheney and Bush are the only people who have seen video of Americans being killed in Iraq and video of coffins.

      "We know our own poll"

It is their own poll he is citing. Probably a poll of all those "friendly" rallies that Bush has. You know, the ones you get kicked out of if you say something bad.

"Republicans will do fine in the fall elections because they stand for something."

They stand for something alright: corruption, personal wealth, ideological hatred. I know not all republicans are this way, but, there is no denying that this is where the party is now in terms of its leadership.

For the people who said Bush would "restore dignity and morality to the White House," where is it?

Where is the contradiction? I know he said Rove said, but, he should have said that the evidence suggest otherwise. I guess I am asking too much of the media to point out flaws with this administration. I need a good dose of Colbert again.

He's quoting the results of an online RNC poll. He say's that's the poll he trusts. In other words he's BSing. I saw this on the tube last night, they showed a clip of Rove speaking at one of the right wing think tanks and he said this.

Rove might be correct that W's personal approval rating is around 60%. That is, 60% of the 29% that still support him, like him,17.4% like him and support him,but11.6% don't like him,but support him, makes sense doesn't it?

I think Rove's "60% approval rating" came from a survey of the White House staff. These guys are looking pretty desperate these days. It's hard to spin the real numbers, which continue in free fall, with no bottom in sight. They just keep mumbling, just plain making stuff up in the hope that there are still a few loyalsubjects who refuse to see the naked emperor for what he is.
