Barnes falsely claimed Gore "flipped on Iraq"
SUMMARY: On The Beltway Boys, Fred Barnes falsely claimed that Al Gore "used to be a hawk" and that he has "flipped on Iraq." In fact, Gore has consistently opposed the U.S.-led invasion of Iraq.
On the August 12 edition of Fox News' The Beltway Boys, co-host and Weekly Standard executive editor Fred Barnes falsely claimed that former Vice President Al Gore has "flipped on Iraq." In fact, as Media Matters for America has noted, Gore has consistently opposed the U.S.-led invasion of Iraq.
Barnes argued that with the defeat of Sen. Joseph I. Lieberman in the August 8 Connecticut Democratic primary, the Democratic Party lost its "last living hawk on national security." He further stated that while Gore "used to be a hawk," he has since "flipped on Iraq." In fact, in a September 2002 speech, Gore made clear his reasons for opposing the United States' Iraq policy, explaining how his opposition to President Bush's push for the invasion of Iraq was consistent with his support of the 1991 war against Iraq. He stated that, although "in 1991, I was one of a handful of Democrats in the United States Senate to vote in favor of the resolution endorsing the [first] Persian Gulf War," and Saddam Hussein's "Iraq does ... pose a serious threat to the stability of the Persian Gulf region," "I am deeply concerned that the course of action that we are presently embarking upon with respect to Iraq has the potential to seriously damage our ability to win the war against terrorism and to weaken our ability to lead the world in this new century."
Gore noted that "in 1991, Iraq had crossed an international border, invaded a neighboring sovereign nation [Kuwait] and annexed its territory. Now, by contrast, in 2002, there has been no such invasion." Gore stated that Iraq's invasion of Kuwait in 1991 had made it "easier" to assemble "a broad international coalition" that supported and "paid all of the significant costs of the war." In contrast, Gore noted, "many of our allies in Europe and Asia are ... openly opposed to what President Bush is doing [in 2002]." He asserted that if the United States acted against Iraq without the support of a broad coalition, it would "severely damage[]" America's ability to "secure[] the continuing, sustained cooperation of many nations" in the fight against terrorism.
Gore also argued that "we [the United States] should focus our efforts first and foremost against those who attacked us on September 11th and who have thus far gotten away with it." He also criticized Bush for "fail[ing] ... to lay out an assessment of how ... the course of a war will run" and "what would follow ... in Iraq in the months and years after a regime change has taken place," and for "assert[ing] that we will take preemptive action even if the threat we perceive is not imminent." Gore argued that "[i]f other nations assert that same right [to pre-emption], "then the rule of law will quickly be replaced by the reign of fear."
This is the second time Gore has been accused of changing position on Iraq. As Media Matters documented, in his monthly Washington Post column, Robert Kagan, a senior associate at the Carnegie Endowment for International Peace and a German Marshall Fund transatlantic fellow, assailed Gore for his "astonishing reversal" on the United States' Iraq policy and for "turn[ing] on all those with whom he once agreed."
From the August 12 edition of Fox News' The Beltway Boys:
BARNES: Welcome back to The Beltway Boys. Hot story number two: "Left Turn."
[Co-host] Mort [Kondracke], dumping Lieberman really tells you a lot about the -- about today's Democratic Party in -- and nominating a -- a limousine liberal like Ned Lamont does as well. I mean, Lieberman is not a nobody. He'll be -- he was the vice presidential running mate to Al Gore on the Democratic ticket in 2006 [sic]. He is the last leading hawk -- and they used to call them Cold War liberals, Kennedy, FDR, Truman and all those -- he's the last living hawk on national security.
And he's been bounced. I mean, the others -- Al Gore used to be a hawk. He flipped on Iraq. [Former vice presidential candidate] John Edwards -- well, he was never that much of a hawk. He's flipped too, as others have. [Sen.] John Kerry [D-MA] pretended to be a hawk, but -- but he's flipped.

ever served in the military and faced real combat ?
resisted what his generals wanted. which was to either invade cuba or bomb the missile sites. he took his time and got the soviet union to withdraw them in what was widely considered a humiliating defeat for them. we had a very respected u. n. ambassador, adlai stevenson, who knew how to handle the situation skillfully without false bluster and bravado. remember when bush came in after clinton? the adults are in charge now, we heard. bring back the kids.
Gore is one of those politicians that righties just can't seem to help themselves from smearing.
Gore has been right about nearly everything from the war, to the environment to corporate accountability, etc... Gore has almost always been ahead of the curve.
If anyone ever took an audit of the positions Gore took and how they worked out, Gore would have the best batting average of anyone in government.
I hope he runs again.
is around in 20 years so I can tell you what an idiot Gore is on global warming.
Gore flipped on Iraq just like he did on tobacco.
Now he has just totally flipped out.
can't read.
...been listening to Sean Hannity lately? Why let the facts get in the way of a good right wing smear job, eh?
BTW, why are you guys so afraid of Al Gore?
Never let the facts get in the way of a good talking point. C'mon, tell us again how we're "fighting them over there so we don't have to fight them over here" or "stay the course"...we need a good laugh.
----"I hope this board is around in 20 years so I can tell you what an idiot Gore is on global warming."----
I hope the board's around, too. And I hope we have presidential leadership that will place a priority on science rather than oil companies.
If we have 20 years of "stay-the-course" Bush-type policies, we'll be sure to remind you how correct Gore was about global warming--and Iraq.
And maybe-with the help of this board-we will be rid of the Kondrackes of the world by then.

is around in 20 years so I can tell you what an idiot Gore is on global warming." -LH.
++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++
Yeah. That would really get me. I can't wait.
But it ain't Gore. Consult a mirror.
to Gen. LeMay and the other hawks pushing him to invade Cuba, a US military disaster would have ensued, as Russian field commanders had tactical thermonuclear weapons and the OK from Moscow to use them at their discretion. We could sure use a leader with the qualities of JFK right now. Bush and Cheney are hell-bent on bombing Iran, and based on their lack of prewar Iraq intelligence, they have no idea how Iran could respond. They pose the greatest threat to world peace since diplomacy defused the Bay of Pigs.
Super-Hawk G. Gordon Liddy was on one of the FOX panels the other day, bemoaning that Bush gave Israel enough time to launch a full invasion with ground troops of all Southern Lebanon, and the Israelis failed to act.
He blamed their failure on the LACK OF MILITARY EXPERIENCE among their top leadership.
Odd that he didn't note that OUR OWN government leadership ... Republicans ... can't produce more than one example of combat experience for every 100 making policy. Certainly, Bush, Cheney, Rummy, Rice, and Rove have NEVER faced enemy fire.
how no one seems to be even the least bit concerned that NO ONE in this administration has a shred of military experience. The one guy that did - Powell - has left and not been heard from again. Odd how he just disappeared, huh? I don't think that military experience is a necessity for every cabinet position, as that's the job of the joint chiefs - but these guys don't listen to their military advisors - at all. If they get an answer that doesn't jibe with their plans, they fire the guy or force him into early retirement. The bottom line for me? They're really perfectly OK with sending the children of others to die in their fiasco of a war. I wonder if they'd be so ready to do so if their kids were going to Iraq? All these folks with their pink and yellow ribbons on their cars that supposedly "support our troops" - are they sending THEIR kids to enlist?? ( maybe a few, but not really likely where I live ) It's really easy to SAY you support the troops - when it comes to action, the vast majority of these people fall way, way short.
Al Gore has been speaking out against the Iraq war since September of 2002, maybe even before that. These people just blatantly lie like that and make things up. It is disgusting and shameless. Sadly, there are and probably always will be people who fall for what these charlatans say. Liars like Fred Barnes are aware of that, so thats why they keep on saying it.
