On the September 22 edition of NBC's Today, NBC White House correspondent Kelly O'Donnell claimed that the debate within the Republican Party on detainee abuse is "an election year plus" for Republicans and that "the president has seen a modest bump in his approval rating since his latest effort to talk about his war on terror." As O'Donnell spoke, an onscreen graphic compared the president's approval rating in three different polls with his job approval rating in the previous version of each poll: a Los Angeles Times/Bloomberg poll, taken September 16-19, that showed Bush at 45 percent, up five percentage points from their previous poll; a USA Today/Gallup poll, conducted September 15-17, that had the president up four percentage points, from 40 percent to 44 percent; and an NBC News/Wall Street Journal poll, conducted September 8-11, that had Bush's approval at 42 percent, up three percentage points from their previous poll. But O'Donnell's report ignored a New York Times/CBS News poll, conducted September 15-19, which showed Bush's approval rating moving up just one point -- from 36 percent to 37 percent -- and included more recent data than either the NBC News/Wall Street Journal or USA Today/Gallup polls.

From the September 22 edition of NBC's Today:

O'DONNELL: Political analysts say both the fight and the quick resolution are an election year plus. The president has seen a modest bump in his approval rating since his latest effort to talk about his war on terror.

It's sad that general 9/11 nostalgia and anti-Clinton fervor spurred on by ABC's fictional 9/11 account seem to have boosted Bush's approval rating, even if the "bounce" in not very significant. Just again goes to show that many, many Americans are simply unable to think critically, rather their opinions seem shaped by mood and disposition more than anything else.

If you check out Rasmussen Reports, which conducts a daily approval poll, there is a slight (3-4%) spike on 9/11 and the few days that followed. It's as if 3-4% of the people sampled felt that they had better not say they disapprove of the president during the anniversary of 9/11.

Dems would quit looking like terrorist sympathizers they could take the house back.

But their weak backbones are showing and the polls are surging for the Republicans.

When will you learn that Progressives are a minority like the Amish. Their cute in their little horse and buggies, but no one wants to live like one.

caught, prosecuted the perps in the terrorist attacks on the homeland during his watch: the first world trade center attack and the OK federal building bombing, one was a fundamentalist religious group and the other was a right wing republican.

Bush let bin Ladin get away. bush let Zacharia get away. bush coddles the cradle of the 9-11 attackers, Saudi Arabia, bush fights against real fuel standards which would free us from dependance on those who "hate our freedoms" as he likes to put it.

Bush is the "terrist" syphathizer. leatherface is a stooge.

They've voted for everything Bush has wanted! They refuse to impeach him! They keep voting to give him more money to kill people! Why are you complaining? They're on YOUR side!

Would stop looking like they were trying to get as many Americans killed as possible in Iraq and traitorously destroying the Constitution MAYBE they wont get thrown out of power for a generation or so. Then again as delusional as wingnuts like you are you probably wont even know when you lose the next three elections in a row.

When polls come out, the media races to interpret the results with their own special analyst. Predictions of what might move poll numbers generate a lot of pre-poll energy that have left some analyst with their foot in their mouths. Sometimes I think the media tries a little too hard to be known for the best analytical perspective, so they have developed a leading style that has resulted in slanted polls.

It is no mystery to see the clockwork rush to let the viewers know the media has the scoop on how the latest poll number affect the other side. CNN and MSNBC generate the first analyst, usually about 3 or 4 bias specialist who have written books on the matter. The whole thing seems staged and I have often thought the polls were manipulated just so the news commentators can be right about their predictions. We have come a long way.

Polls in general will show Bushie and his cronies to have a slight uptick. Afterall for the past 3 weeks we have seen a lie on ABC called the Path to 9/11, a President that used 9/11 to enhance his failed strategy on Iraq and he UN speech , MSM interviews and Gas prices falling.

The MSM needs to start asking why are gas prices falling so much before an election. Big Oil wants the Repubs to win, its proven by these dramatic price reductions.

It seems to have been taken during exactly the same period as 2 of the other polls. Yes, it only showed Bush rising 1 point but when 3 other polls show show bounces of 3, 4, and 5 points it probably is indicative of an uptick in approval for whatever reason (I would probably attribute this more to the dramatic drop in gas prices than the September 11th anniversary and Bush's terror speeches). If you look at realclearpolitics or pollster.com, the approval ratings trend has definitely been upward since early September.
