SUMMARY: A Wall Street Journal editorial based its suggestion that Rep. Nancy Pelosi is hypocritical for criticizing Rep. J. Dennis Hastert over his handling of the scandal surrounding former Rep. Mark Foley on the false claim that Pelosi had voted "to revoke Boy Scouts' charter for its ban on gay scoutmasters." In fact, Pelosi answered "present" on a bill to repeal the federal charter of the Boy Scouts of America, which is neither a yea nor a nay vote.

An October 5 Wall Street Journal editorial suggested that House Democratic Leader Nancy Pelosi (CA) is hypocritical for criticizing House Speaker J. Dennis Hastert (R-IL) over his handling of the scandal surrounding former Rep. Mark Foley (R-FL) based on the false claim that "Parson Pelosi" was "last seen on this issue voting to revoke the Boy Scouts' charter for its ban on gay scoutmasters." In fact, Pelosi did not cast a vote on the bill to repeal the federal charter of the Boy Scouts of America, which failed on September 13, 2000, by a vote of 12-362. Pelosi was one of 50 House Democrats to answer "present," which is neither a yea nor a nay vote; 11 Democrats voted to revoke the charter. One Republican answered present, and one Republican voted to revoke the charter. Moreover, the October 5 editorial was the second time in three days that a Journal editorial baselessly connected Democratic criticism of Hastert to the Boy Scouts' ban on gay scoutmasters, as Media Matters for America documented.

From the October 5 Wall Street Journal editorial:

Now that Mark Foley's carcass has gone over the side, the political waters are filling with sharks fighting over the remnants. We're going to find out how fast Denny Hastert can swim.

First to the site as always was House Minority Leader Nancy Pelosi. Republican leaders "failed to protect the children in their trust," intoned Parson Pelosi, last seen on this issue voting to revoke the Boy Scouts' charter for its ban on gay scoutmasters. So exercised is Ms. Pelosi that she wants the GOP leadership "immediately questioned under oath" by the Ethics Committee.

...last seen on this issue voting to revoke the Boy Scouts' charter for its ban on gay scoutmasters.

"This issue"? Which issue would that be, WSJ editor?

This is not a gay issue. This is an issue about a less than honorable Congressman who abused his office of trust and authority, not to mention his constituents, for his own carnal and twisted deviant pleasures. And the possibility of a coverup for political reasons.

Straight, gay, transgender, asexual, bisexual, trisexual or nonsexual - it is irrelevant to this entire scandalous matter.

When are they going to learn (um, that would most likely be never) that this isn't a gay issue. This is a predatory adult issue. I agree with you Tommy, doesn't matter who does it. Republican, democrat, gay, bi, transgendered, post op transgender, man, woman, it just doens't matter. Trying to tie the Boy Scouts banning gay leaders to this whole issue is simply ridiculous.

What a way to avoid a contraversial issue!!!!! One way, I guess, to express opposition to a bill without being fingered as opposed (except by WSJ). How would she have voted if the vote had been close?

She didn't have the guts to vote for it. There's no evidence that gay men are more of a threat to little boys than heterosexual men are to little girls. In fact, I'll bet statistics will show the opposite. How many high school girls basketball, volleyball or softball coaches are men? Should men be allowed to coach girls? What's the difference?

She simply signed a letter to Mr Clinton to resign as Honorary President of the Boy Scouts of America. I do not agree with her stance, but that is the fact here.
