Time national political correspondent Karen Tumulty, in an October 31 article for Time.com, reported as a fact that Sen. John F. Kerry (D-MA) "insulted" U.S. troops when he said in an October 30 speech at a campaign rally in California: "You know, education -- if you make the most of it, you study hard and you do your homework and you make an effort to be smart, you can do well. If you don't, you get stuck in Iraq."

Tumulty's reporting echoed the claims of White House and GOP officials, who have attacked Kerry and demanded that he apologize for allegedly slandering U.S. troops. Kerry, however, has said that his remark was not an insult to American soldiers serving in Iraq, but rather a "botched joke" about President Bush -- something Tumulty neglected to mention in her article. Nor did she mention that, as the Associated Press reported, Kerry had delivered "several one-liners," including one about Bush, immediately prior to his "stuck in Iraq" comment. And Tumulty made no mention of Kerry's assertion, as noted by The New York Times, that he misread his prepared remarks, which make clear that he was criticizing Bush. Also, former House Majority Leaders Dick Armey (R-TX) and Tom DeLay (R-TX), as well as former Bush campaign chief strategist Matthew Dowd, have agreed that Kerry was not referring to the soldiers in Iraq.

Armey went further, acknowledging on the October 31 edition of Hardball with Chris Matthews that Republicans were making political hay by "misconstru[ing]" what Kerry said: "Well, it`s pretty standard fare in political discourse. You misconstrue what somebody said, you isolate a statement, you lend your interpretation to it, then feign moral outrage." When host Chris Matthews stated that Kerry "was trashing Bush," Armey responded, "Right," and went on to say, "A fundamental premise of politics is: We can make this work if people just never figure it out."

From Tumulty's October 31 article:

You've got to wonder about John Kerry's eye-hand coordination. His career is falling into a pattern. Whenever Kerry is confronted with a big decision, he tries to compensate for his last mistake. He voted against the first Iraq war, which turned out to be a success. So when the second one came around, he swallowed his misgivings and voted for it. That also turned out to be a mistake. So when it came time to vote for the $87 billion to fund the war that he had voted for, he produced what must be the single most damaging sound bite in modern political history by voting for it before he voted against it.

So now, when U.S. troops are suffering their worst casualties in nearly two years, he insulted them. Could Karl Rove have dreamed up a better October surprise than having the Democrats' most recent choice for Commander in Chief suggest that the men and women are dying there because they weren't smart enough to get into law school?

From the 5 p.m. ET hour of the October 31 edition of MSNBC's Hardball with Chris Matthews:

MATTHEWS: Mr. Armey, what do you make of this -- well, it's a rhubarb I guess, in politics terms. What is it? Is this a real "catch him," "we got him," or is it they're making it look like they've got Kerry saying something?

ARMEY: Well, it's pretty standard fare in political discourse. You misconstrue what somebody said, you isolate a statement, you lend your interpretation to it, then feign moral outrage; and Democrats have been doing it for years.

MATTHEWS: So, it's a bicoastal, bipartisan opportunity.

ARMEY: Absolutely. And I would say to John Kerry, "Look, you know, you live by the P.C., you die by the P.C." I mean, the P.C. was a Democrat creation, so, I mean, share and share alike.

MATTHEWS: What do you mean the P.C.?

ARMEY: Political correctness -- you know, feigning moral outrage for what might be perceived to have been a possible slight, given my interpretation of what was said.

MATTHEWS: And so, the president -- well, according to the prepared statement we've gotten a copy of -- will jump on Kerry defending the troops when, in fact, Kerry may well have meant -- according to reading the script of what he said and the account of it -- he was trashing the very man who's now defending the troops. He was trashing Bush himself and Bush says, "Don't say those terrible things about my troops!"

ARMEY: Right.

MATTHEWS: So, this is a bit of theater orchestrated well by the White House. They have got the American Legion commander out there making a statement. They got him to do it. I'm sure -- I assume that most of these people did not read the whole statement of Kerry yesterday, but they are happy to jump on the quote they got.

ARMEY: A fundamental premise of politics is: We can make this work if people just never figure it out.

We have Kerry and his stupid mouth.

This is all Kerrys fault. His bitterness and hatered toward Bush is going to sadly hurt the Democrats. Imus was right his morning, he needs to " Pleas stop it. Stop talking."

Kerry was exactly right. The right bit on this non-scandal and look like fools for it. Go Kerry.

            >>"This is all Kerrys fault"<<

Kerry should have made his comment clearer. Now he has. It's very clear what he meant. It ought to be over. But it is the right-wingers, led by the Coward in Chief, who WANT to perpetuate this as long as they can. They'll do it by pretending Kerry was disparaging the troops. They'll do it by using the troops for political purposes. They'll do it to try and change the subject from Foley, Iraq and all the other disasters and fiascos they've created the last six years.

But they are falling into a trap. Anytime they get people thinking about Iraq, they lose. I say let them keep at it, it will only hurt them next Tuesday.

Kerry made the gaff-supremo! Never should have come anywhere near this sort of stuff.

Not to mention, now is the time to cut all the cutesy crap and talk tough, talk like you mean it. Hemming and hawing with subtle half-jokes that can be misconstrued will only get you into trouble. Now look... Very disappointing.

Just demonstrates how screwed up Conservatives' priorities are. Even if we concede that Kerry's statement was an insult to the troops, which is worse? Bush is getting them killed at a rate of 3 per day in a war we never should have started, and they get all huffy because Kerry "insulted" them?

      Are they really that stupid?

Bush: Is this gonna work, Karl? I mean, are people gonna fall for this Kerry bashing routine again?

Rove: This is an election, dammit! It's about winning! People don't want the waters muddied with facts. If we lob enough mental burrs like "John Kerry insulted the troops" and "voting for Democrats is a vote for the terrorists", the public will walk into the voting booth with that on their minds. After that, who cares one way or another? We'll win. Two more years of stay the course, um, I mean "adapt to win" and two more years of tax breaks for the wealthy, oh, that’s tax breaks for the Middle Class. Two more years of salad days for mega corporations, er, um, I mean the GOP. Salad days, George. That’s what it’s all about.

Bush: I like a nice crunchy salad, especially that Romulan lettuce with some Vulcan dressing. That’s good eatin’.

        Rove: ....

I heard a local marine being asked this morning about Kerry's "stuck in Iraq" comments and he said was insulted. I also saw a picture of some of our brave soldiers in Iraq who were holding up a sign that read "HALP US JON CARRY - WE R STUCK HEAR IN IRAK" so I believe Kerry's comments were insulting to at least some of the troops. No misinformation here. Seems like a non-story for MMFA to me.

I find it hard to believe that anyone who would make a sign like that is really insulted. It is more of a media/political event at that point.

The only way you could really not understand Kerry's explanation is if you haven't actually heard it or you have a predisposition against Kerry.

Maybe that's EXACTLY because they are being spoonfed this garbage from the right-wing media along with the rest of the country. This is simply ANOTHER example of the GOP using the troops for their own political gain.

is the mainstream media whoring for the bush administration. they are keeping this going and refusing, as always, to run the remarks right before the contested remark, which would make it clear that kerry was making fun of bush. or even having anyone on to point that out. tumulty unwittingly proves that point in her column. she says kerry "produced what must be the single most damaging sound bite in modern political history by voting for it before he voted against it". exactly correct, it was a "sound bite" . and he was explaining to an audience why he voted for one bill while voting against another. which is exactly what every republican did. yet the press, republican lap dogs that they are, showed that five second clip over and over and over, reenforcing the gop charge that kerry was a "flip flopper", when he was no more of a flip flopper than those who cast different votes on the same bill. tumulty should be asking the question: why does the media do this? let things be reduced to arguing over a sound bite that tells half the story? the failing was the media, not kerry. and they are failing the political discourse in this country, and failing the country. the democrats are always under the microscope and god forbid that they make the least ambiguous statement. meanwhile when the downing street memo, proving bush hyped the iraq wmd threat, was headlines for days in england, our press was virtually silent on it, even though they had been covering the british election heavily. the mainstream media shills for this administration and uses fox like created controversies to slam democrats.
