Morris falsely claimed Obama voted against ethics reform

In his January 17 column for The Hill, Fox News analyst Dick Morris attacked presumptive presidential candidate Sen. Barack Obama (D-IL), claiming that Obama "made his first misstep a few days ago when he joined only a handful of Democrats in opposing a Senate reform banning the increasingly widespread practice of legislators hiring their family members on their campaign or PAC [political action committee] payrolls." Morris was apparently referring to a proposed amendment by Sen. David Vitter (R-LA) to the Legislative Transparency and Accountability Act of 2007 that Morris claimed Obama voted against. In fact, on January 10, Obama voted against a motion to table -- or postpone consideration of and effectively kill -- the amendment.

As of January 16, the vote to table Vitter's amendment has been the only Senate roll-call vote during the 110th Congress on the issue of legislators hiring family members to their campaign committees or PACs.

Morris wrote:

Presidential hopeful Sen. Barack Obama (D-Ill.) made his first misstep a few days ago when he joined only a handful of Democrats in opposing a Senate reform banning the increasingly widespread practice of legislators hiring their family members on their campaign or PAC payrolls. Obama has not heard the last of this vote. Sen. Hillary Rodham Clinton (D-N.Y.), who opposes wives cashing in on their husbands' positions, voted righteously in favor of the reform and will probably use the Illinois senator's vote against him in the presidential primaries.

[...]

Obama's inexplicable pro-nepotism vote may have been cast in sympathy with Rep. Jesse Jackson Jr. (D-Ill.), whose hiring of his wife, Sandi, to work on his campaign prompted an FEC ruling allowing the practice. Jackson might be afraid that the Senate action will catalyze a similar reform in the House, which could cut way back on his disposable family income.

But whatever the reason for his vote, Obama has screwed up. The public will not take kindly to a senator who pledged to clean up the political process voting to allow wives to be hired with special-interest campaign funds.

But, as the weblog Obamarama, authored by former Media Matters for America staffer Jeremy Cluchey, noted in a January 17 entry, Morris' claim "is, put quite simply, wrong":

The roll call on the vote shows that Sen. Obama voted Nay - against tabling the amendment, or essentially in support of debating it. He was in the minority, and the amendment was tabled, meaning it will not be able to be considered for addition to the ethics bill.

The motion to table the amendment passed 54-41, with 17 Republicans joining 35 Democrats and two Independents in voting to table the amendment, while 30 Republicans and 11 Democrats -- including Obama -- voted against the motion.

If Morris has his way, Obama will not get any traction in the '08 race because that blows his Hillary dream up in smoke. And he can't have that.

His obsession with anything Clinton is patholigical, and rather disturbing. His bedroom wallpaper must be plastered with Hillary's face. Perhaps he hides in her bushes and prays for a glance, or a bone.

Why do you think he hates her so much...she shut him off and Bill sents him little ditties such as "this little piggy went to market" and Mr. "I was Important Once" cries all the way home.

Still can't figure out why this guy is still around...I guess I "toen't know"

To Morris and the minions of Fox News viewers, truth is what you make it. If they want to believe Al Gore claimed to have single handedly invented the Internet(s), then it is so. If they want to believe Bill Clinton's haircut interfered with air traffic, then that too is true. If they want to think John Kerry voted for "higher taxes" hundreds of times, heck, what's there to discuss? it happened.

Barack Obama, who was called Barack "Osama" by a "friend" of mine in August 2004 (guess that makes him a pioneer in slandering Obama), is no exception to this on-the-fly remolding of reality. The Republicans will align him with the forces of darkness whenever possible, put words in his mouth, and lie about his voting record. Thy will be done. The man is barely a candidate for President. Just wait until 2008. The salvos of mud slinging from Fox and "Friends" will have us ducking from coast to coast.

He just simply does not have the cognitive ability to realize that voting against a bill that is against something is actually voting in favor of that thing. That whole double negative thing threw his pea-brain out of whack.

"That whole double negative thing threw his pea-brain out of whack."

Yes as many of you may have noticed many neo-con's are born without the ability to understand double negatives (or bad jokes). Therefore our use of these complicated ideas is a bias and is in effect Doublahopia. Look at current tax policy, you have a deficit so you cut taxes hoping the two cancel each other out.

That is why you should join me to pass legislation to end this complex and confusing pattern of speach in our schools.

Potential Video: Opens, childern pointing at a small pasty white boy on the playground and chanting, "haha, Timmy can't use double negatives!"

Voice over: "You can help childern like Timmy, join the republican party and end the hateful use of complex english in shools.

Conservatives, generally, seem to be unwilling or unable to think in shades of gray, therefore rendering them incapable of analogous thinking, perception of subtle differences or comprehending the complexity of any given problem and its solution.

That's why they are so gullible, especially on emotional issues. In their view, Obama cast a No vote at some point during the debate on this bill; that's all they need to know.

Unfortunately, this will be used against Obama in the future, if he gets the nomination.

I don't watch this guy, or listen to him, so I really don't know what he looks like...

...but the screen-shot that accompanies this item... it shows a guy that looks remarkably like the VP... except with hair, and a suit both crummier and worse fitting.

If they're really two different guys, then why are they both named "dick"?

They're either both dicks, or they're just the same dick... one has hair and a worse looking worse fitting suit than the other, is the only difference I see, from the screen-shot.

I once stood about four feet away from him in Times Square late one night while he was being interviewed by Geraldo. I can assure you that Dick Morris is even creepier in person... fat and doughy, a pasty complexion and just plain creepy.

That must have been some creepfest. Morris and Rivera, it doesn't get much creepier. I liked Times Square the way it used to be. At least back then, the prostitutes admitted to being prostitutes.

not to mention the pro's actually offered a service.

Seriously, Dick Morris is right up there with Bill Kristol in the " why the hell are these people still asked for their opinion on anything" category.

I guess I know the answer. There;s and audience out there for comforting BS.

Simple. He's the Inside Story on Hillary - endless secret knowledge only Dick can have. Get the Dirt Here At Faux! That's why the badly researched attack against Obama. Morris knows his destination is obscurity, his livelihood vaporized if Hillary doesn't make it. She is unlikely to get another shot if she doesn't get the nomination and the Dem nominee wins.

Was it Dick Morris that was shamed during the Clinton years because he was found in a hotel room with some hookers??? Didn't hear from him too much after that. Of course, now all the bad guys show up on Faux, Dick, Ollie. Can't understand how their opinions are so meaningful, after they were both shamed. Can't they find any other opinionators that are clean or are ther none on THAT side????????????????????
