On the January 18 broadcast of his nationally syndicated radio show, discussing Sen. Barack Obama's (D-IL) smoking, Rush Limbaugh said: "If he's got fire in his hands, what has he got in his pants?"

Earlier, Limbaugh had played an audio clip of Manhattan Institute senior fellow John H. McWhorter from the January 17 edition of The Big Story with John Gibson, during which McWhorter said, referring to Obama: "I think a lot of people find him sexy, and I think, even in today's America, there's a sense that there's something vaguely sexy about cigarettes; you've got fire in your hand."

Limbaugh also called Obama a "godlike figure to the godless," adding, "[Y]ou don't criticize gods or godlike figures."

From the January 18 broadcast of Premiere Radio Networks' The Rush Limbaugh Show:

LIMBAUGH: Gibson says, "Obama's dirty little secret: He's ... a cigarette smoker. ... [Q]uestion is: Would you vote for a smoker as president? John, is that kind ... of an impediment" for him?

McWHORTER [audio clip]: Obama is seen as very, very cool. I think a lot of people find him sexy, and I think, even in today's America, there's a sense that there's something vaguely sexy about cigarettes; you've got fire in your hand.

LIMBAUGH: Now, I love John McWhorter, and I -- John McWhorter is brilliant -- but where has he been? Is anybody portraying cigarette smoking as sexy? Oh, Holly -- Hollywood does -- Hollywood, and I've -- you know, it does. I'm going to -- I'm sure I'm going to infuriate some of you people, but it looks cool. I mean, people who know how to smoke cigarettes look cool. Why do you think Hollywood does it?

They're freaking out in there on the other side of the glass. Dawn's face is turning four sheets of red. I'm not talking about it is cool, I'm saying it can be made to look cool. Why do you think Hollywood does it? Why do you think movies -- why do you think kids end up trying it? It looks cool. They make it look cool. It's one of the big seductive problems with it, and this guy's effectively saying it here.

He's saying there's something vaguely sexy about cigarettes. You've got fire in your hand. And now that's -- what he's saying is Obama can make smoking sexy. What If Obama is seen smoking in public, and it is said because no one wants to criticize him because, he's above criticism, because he's a godlike figure to the godless. Now, you don't criticize gods or godlike figures. What if the whole anti-smoking bunch has to come out, 'cause they're a bunch of libs too, has to find a way to justify Obama's coolness? Because he's got fire. If he's got fire in his hands, what has he got in his pants? You're gonna hear all of these things.

They conveniently left out the part where Rush exposes liberal hypocrisy with regard to smoking. Liberals have tried to ban smoking in your own car and are working on banning it in outer space, yet you don't hear anyone mad at Obama for being a smoker?

at least be consistent. liberals were actually consistent with the lewinsky scandal, they defended him but they've never held marriage or committed relationships in a high regard anyway.

Is Obama exposing his smoking to others that do not wish to be around it? Does he smoke at restaurants?

Lots of liberals smoke. Lots of conservatives smoke. Some of them just don't want to smell your smoke when they're eating or trying to walk into a grocery store.

Statistics show that the divorce rate in red states is higher than in blue states. The state with the lowest divorce rate is the bluest of the blue states, Massachusetts.

The only thing I can say that is positive about the present occupant of the White House, is that of the last three Republican Presidents we've been subjected to, he is the only one who is NOT a divorcee. Not so Ford and Saint Ronald.

Please explain Limbaugh's definition of "committed relationship". He is a draft dodging, drug using, overweight, serial divorcee blowhard.

          >>"Liberals have tried to ban smoking in your own car ...working on banning it in outer space"<<

Example of myths that soon become stridently-spoken right-wing "facts".

FYI: the car ban applies to smoking in a car when CHILDREN are present.

FYI: A search of google news reveals nothing about banning smoking in space. There ARE, however, bans in effect for PUBLIC SPACES. Perhaps this right-winger is very confused about the word "space"....

"Louisiana, Arkansas, Puerto Rico and Bangor, Maine, have recently enacted laws banning smoking in cars when children are present, according to Matt Barry, director of policy research for the Campaign for Tobacco-Free Kids, a Washington-based advocacy group."

Banning smoking in space makes sense in the same way that banning smoking near gas pumps makes sense. YOU DON'T WANT TO BLOW THE PLACE UP! It only seems to be a "liberal" position because of the right's current war on science and common sense.

If you want to smoke in space, go right ahead. Just pay for your vehicle yourself. Go by yourself or, better yet, take Water-Lugger Rush with you. Have him bring along one of those huge di-sorry, CIGARS he likes to suck. If he doesn't blow you out of the sky you'll be so sick you'll wish he had.

Now for your comment about marriage. Yeah those conservatives are fully behind marriage. In fact they love it so very much they try to have multiple marriages in their life time. Rush has gone through multiple wives. So has Gingrich and Reagan. Yep. They LOVE marriage.

Christ, man, you and Limbaugh need to cool it with the hypocrisy talk. When have smokers ever been pariahs in the eyes of Liberals? Liberals may be against the Big Tobacco Lobby, but I've never known a Liberal to shun a politician because he was a smoker. I've never known a Liberal to shun ANYONE because he/she was a smoker. Liberals in general believe that what you do with your body and your free time are your decision. Yet you and Rush and all the other ditto-heads conflate "anti-Tobacco Lobby" and "anti-smoker." The truth is, those of us on the left don't have an equivalent demographic to shun like the right has homosexuals, because the left is more heterogeneous and typically doesn't shun people that are different.

And really, man. Cigarette smoking? Is that all you've got? If you're looking for an analogous situation on the right that is just as ridiculous, here goes: The right likes to preach that they are the party of morals and family values. I think we can agree on that (even if we can't agree that the left is anti-smoker). If it was determined that a Republican candidate regularly watched Desparate Housewives, would YOU be the first in line to withdraw your support for said candidate? After all, what TV programs a candidate is not any more trivial than whether he or she smokes cigarettes. Family values is

            undeniably
a selling point for Republican candidates. Would watching Desparate Housewives make the Republican candidate and his supporters hypocrites? I wouldn't think so, and neither would any of you on the right, but that doesn't seem to stop you from making rediculous claims of hypocrisy when it comes to Obama and his cancer sticks. Now that is hypocrisy for you.

In staid New Hampshire, media was observing that even the citizens of staid (by reputation) New Hampshire treated Obama like a rock star on his recent visit there. So it seems pretty obvious to me that Limbaugh's trying to counter this by trying to tar Obama with the Clinton/Lewinsky brush.

He's trying to get people to hate Obama based on pure speculation. Trying to say that just because Obama smokes, maybe he's an adulterer, too! It's pretty lame IMO, but there's no accounting for the freaks and idiots who give Limbaugh the time of day.

IMNSHO, Obama OOZES sex appeal out of every pore. Consider, in contrast, the sex appeal of the Republican 2008 hopefuls... zero, zilch, zip, nada. Might I even say, "ICK."

When you don't bother to educate your voters about the things that matter, yes, some are going to vote based on the candidate's sex appeal. Limbaugh's playing a dangerous game, here ... average Americans are still very positively disposed toward Bill Clinton overall. Unless Limbaugh can actually prove that Obama has cheated on his wife (and he's stupid enough to run for President these days with that skeleton in his closet), Limbaugh is just going to look like a jealous nerd... not that he doesn't already.

...you want to silently (and irresponsibly) assert that a) someone is a racist without immediate or contextual due cause (sure, bring out the tired list: McNabb, etc...), simply because; b) he contends, along with everyone else, that a certain public figure who happens to be black, is quite sexy (and he IS sexy). And that's it. It's fashioned in the manner of a "headline" meant to jump out at you c/o one, MM. It's paradoxical that a simple statement of "fact" (from MM) can display a more destructive, hidden agenda in an attempt to expose (or distort) mere opinion in the political realm (from Limbaugh). Apparently, the latter isn't permitted anymore. It's only because Media Matters draws no attention to anything of real substance here in a lazy exposure of that opinion that it's then left to the reader to jump to certain "conclusions", read cultural stereotypes. Limbaugh really didn't go there. It's a trick as old as The New York Herald. In effect, MM has taken it upon themselves to take an assumptive, racist stance--putting thoughts in someone else's head (including yours) that may not be there, as to brand someone they clearly don't like, a racist. In today's climate, that's hate. However, because they made no actual claims of racism, it somehow provides an immunity-defense. And you are the racist for claiming such and so on... To be fair, I think this kind of feature would best be left for a "Pure Entertainment" section with a disclaimer. I'd have no problem with it. But since little is done here for fun and with an increasingly police state-styled view of public discourse, we got this. To be just, you oughta be ashamed of yourself, Media Matters. I'll let O'Reilly's potshots at you slide this time. Thank you for asking why, Doris. I think it puts us a bit closer to the truth. Put that in a headline. I'm going to.

People like Rush only defend black people who he considers to be the "right" kind of black people. The only time that we have heard of lynching, besides James Byrd from Texas, was from Clarence Thomas and Rush regarding Rice. People like Rush have used code words like "what's in his pants" referring to the white boy's horror that some black kid has a bigger dick and maybe he's knows how to use it. That's what makes Rush and Bill worse than the sh** that comes from a horses ass. They use old code words while trying to appear innocent. I'm really old and and heard the same "code" words used time and time again. It get's old and it becomes really old when they keep using it and so many don't see thru it.

Is it conservative misinformation if a oncservative talk show host says it? Most likely. this quote stands out. Limbaugh called Obama a "godlike figure to the godless," adding, "[Y]ou don't criticize gods or godlike figures." Of course it's speculation but it's not accurate information is it? An example would be nice from Limbaugh. What substantiates this absurd claim and subsequent absurd claims? Nothing. Con on the radio misinforming his audience through ignorant statements meant to perpetuate the myth that liberals or anyone who would follow Obama as being godless, meets the criteria.

Wrong. You and most other liberals on this site take things way too seriously. Limbaugh's whole monologue here was simply a joke. He wasn't being serious about anything. There's a reason why he has 20 million listeners a week, and it's not just because he's conservative. It's because he's funny and entertaining! That's one of the main reasons why Limbaugh has such a huge audience.

You have to be pretty ignorant to make that charge. Al Franken cries every time he's on the air for Pete's sake. Don't mistake well informed passionate reverance for our country and civic responsibility of paying attention to our elected officials as hate. Beside the point though. Rush's comments were obviously meant in a negative way. That is in itself hateful. There was no substance to his commentary. He was mocking him and people who like him. To you it may be harmless. That doesn't really mean anything to me. It doesn't change the deragatory nature of Rush's comments.

On what planet do you live? On Rush Limbaugh's planet, liberals (defined as anyone not subscribing to his right wing kookiness) are "bad people"... I've heard him say it. Basically, what he's telling his listeners is that when they see their neighbor driving by with a John Kerry sticker still affixed to the bumper of his car they can automatically brand him as a bad person... they don't have to bother to learn anything more about him. He's liberal, therefore he's a bad person. His antagonism, in the guise of "humor", is designed to foment hatred of fellow Americans. Rush Limbaugh, perhaps more than any other living American, has contributed to the divisiveness and hatred in this country. He is pure evil... and morons eat up his schtick like it was ice cream.

I was subjected to his daily diatribes in the early 90's, by a co-worker who was a regular listener (and, concidentally or not, a very unhappy person). From that experience I would posit that Rush's 20 million listeners, and his bank account, confirm the wisdom of the conservative curmudgeon of Baltimore, H. L. But you're too smart.I saw the easy obvious root.

I posted an amateurish psychoanalysis of the Oxymorn yesterday (Portrait of the Addict as a Young Poor Excuse For a Man), so excuse me for this, but...

Rush very clearly states that smoking is sexy and seductive, that the not-too-subtly phallic cigarette MUST sway peoples minds to what's in Obama's pants.

        This brings up two interesting points;

Rush is found in posession of Viagra, and has one of his stock publicity photos sporting a giant stogie (way too obvious substitute/ compensator ?)

Rush, if you've ever listened to him, is blatantly homophobic, and often lapses into a high-pitched effeminate "girly-man" voice when reciting his liberal straw man agenda. Most extreme homophobes are gay men lacking the courage to be honest with who they are.

And again (at the risk of being as ham-fisted as Rush himself), he poses for a picture sucking on a HUGE STOGIE!

Where's my PhD.?Freud's got nothin' on me.

All you're doing is copying everyone else: First, Melanie Morgan referred to Obama as "halfrican", and later you did the same; now after Gibby reveals the "dirty little secret" that he smokes {which, if it was anythng like the cocaine use he admitted to in his autobiography published years ago, really isn't a secret}, you go saying he has "fire in his hands" . . .

The Oxy withdrawls must really be getting to you . . . you can't even come up with your own schtick anymore . . . it may be time for you to step aside in favor of Savage Weiner, Smearconish, and Beck . . .

And for The Truth Defecator and Ldoren: It ain't that liberals/progressives/Democrats don't have a sense of humor . . . believe me, there was many a chuckle heard on Nov. 8th of last year, especially when recalling the words of Karl Rove, who claimed he had "THE math" . . . its just that what we find humorous usually does not include sexism, racism, or murder . . . so you'll forgive me not busting out in a chuckle when I hear Crazy Annie "joke" about killing a sitting SC Justice or assassinating a sitting US president . . . Or hearing Rush make a metaphorical leap from Obama's smoking to speculating about his sexual promiscuity . . .

Another American, you and your posse have tossed "sexist" at me, or, in your case, "abviously (sic squared)...sexist. Sexism might not be the best descriptor for me or any woman, for men are the minority gender, but the holders of the majority of the power. 2% of the Fortune 500 CEOs are women:

              [link to money.cnn.com]

This and other stats reveal systemic sexism, where gender differentiation benefits men. That's what sexism is. Since gender differentiation doesn't benefit me, I can't be sexist. I admit that I can be an arse or prejudiced or a fool. I admit that fill all these roles and hopefully, with aplomb.

"Pink penis" is a quirky way to consider privilege.

You fellas can cast it as a tirade or sexism, but you should ask yourselves, "Why does this agitate me? Why would Holly's coupling 'pink' and 'penis' have me lobbing verbal rocks at her?"

Rush has a pink penis and that's pivotal, even though some white men want to pretend that they aren't privileged. And Rush is a defender of privilege. That's his role. And those who defend him are defenders of The Defender of Privilege.

Since gender differentiation doesn't benefit me, I can't be sexist.

                *****************

Where does that come from? So by your definition a black person can't be racist? That is absurd. A man or a woman who blatantly fosters stereotypes or prejudges or discriminates against a member of the opposite sex is sexist. You are not immune to that label, nobody is if they exhibit such behavior.

A black man can't be racist unless he wields disproportionate power within a system that differentiates and consequently rewards and punishes on the basis of race.

However, as I noted above, a black man can be "an arse or prejudiced or a fool," as I manage to be most days.

So, a black man might prejudge you, Tommy, but that prejudment isn't couched in a system that rewards those who are white and penalizes those who are black. His prejudgment isn't backed by crappy schools for black kids and those cops who are tainted by racism and embedded poverty.

I live in a racially mixed neighborhood. So, the police often visit our neighborhood because................................????????

The number one reason they're called to my neighborhood is because someone sees "a suspicious person."

I bet you can crack the code for "suspicious person."

                  I know you can.

Now, Tommy, I urge you to get beyond your disappointment in me, your shock, and your ad hom attacks...and talk to me.

I have not attacked you, I simply disagreed with your assertion. If you felt otherwise, I am sorry.

As for your "racist" and "sexist" definitions, I disagree. Perhaps it is just a semantic arguement, nevertheless those who exhibit such open discriminations don't get any softer labels ascribed to their prejudices from me, simply because they hold less proportianate "power". That is an excuse, in my opinion.

I understand your point and Tommy, you might be right. Sexism might run both ways. Racism too. What I shared isn't my theory. It's just a standard theory and I hope you can glean some value from it, for when white guys assert that THE system isn't fair, that might be true for their circumstances, but when one considers averages, some people are more equal than others...and those people have pink penises.

whereas some of the MMFA faithful might frame me as an angry feminist, whereas I have written for the major feminist mags, I sometimes provoke feminists when I opine. I've even had readers (female and feminist) threaten me. So, I've learned that some feminists are locked and loaded. Therefore, it's interesting when some of the MMFA readership frame me as sexist, loony, and far left. There are women far to the left of me who frame me as a "Protector of Patriarchy." And yes, PoP is a quote.

You're close - it was literary critical theory. I had it twice, from two women at two different universities, and I can tell you that thinking back on it, I am not entirely unreceptive to the term "feminazi."

I did take a women's studies class as well, and the woman who taught it was fantastic. As were almost all of my other female professors. (In fact, I had many more bad male professors than female.)

From Wik: The term racism is usually applied to the dominant group in a society, because it is that group which has the means to oppress others.

The term can also apply to any individual or group, regardless of social status or dominance.

Many terms and words can evolve over time in the vernacular and their meaning either becomes more or less broad......and perhaps this is the case with "racism".

But I believe it is widely accepted that anyone who exhibits behavior defined as such is deserving of the label.

anyone who thinks rush is funny and not hateful must share his unrelenting derision of "Libruls".

i love how rush is always telling me what i think and what my underlying motives are.

he is always "translating" those "Librul" words and actions for his audience. "see folks, this is what they want you to believe, this is what is REALLY going on.."

he says this crap every day.

and btw- is he a political commentator, or a 'funny' satirist?

in the case he is a satirist, doesn't that mean his humor is intended to portray a specific perspective on the subject of the satire?

it sure would be nice sometime to hear any conservative commentator on the radio or tv speak about the ideas a person has, and less about why their flaws make the ideas irrelevant.

we are supposed to listen to george as if it is the word of god, despite his numerous past failures, and moral weaknesses.

one more thing. who is rush to say that the opposition is godless? last i checked, who is he to say that half the country disdains committed relationships? wouldn't opposition to gay marriage be opposition to committed relationships?

i think rush is funny too. not the 'jokes' he tells, but the hypocritical joke he is.
