O'Reilly agreed that illegal immigrants' "third-world value system ... can corrupt the education system"
On the January 16 broadcast of his nationally syndicated radio show, Bill O'Reilly agreed with a caller's assertion that illegal immigrants "bring corrupting influences" to the United States, including "a third-world value system" that "can corrupt the education system." O'Reilly replied: "Absolutely. And that's why the dropout rate is so high."
O'Reilly went on to claim that "[i]f you say, 'F you,' to a teacher in Mexico, that teacher can go out and beat the hell out of you -- and worse, if you do it in El Salvador [or] Nicaragua. ...You disrespect a teacher down there, you're gonna be bleeding." While Mexico and Nicaragua reportedly do not ban corporal punishment in schools outright, "[c]orporal punishment is prohibited in schools" in El Salvador "by article 90 of the General Law on Education," according to the Global Initiative to End All Corporal Punishment of Children.

While the comment he made sound rude, I have to agree with the argument. When I see kids in highschool that can barely speak english, and expect to graduate barely knowing how to read or speak english, how can you argue it does not bring the system down. What happened to "Rasing the bar" in education? If that is the point he is makeing, I support it.

As usual, Bill cannot keep his mouth shut. For the record, in Mexico and Central America, students would never dare to say Fyou to a teacher. Not because of fear of punishment, but out of respect. Unlike US students, students south of the border do respect their teachers because teachers are respected in the community. I'm from El Salvador, I studied in El salvador up to eight grade and then came to this country and the student-teacher relationships here were just nonexistan. I would like to know where did Bill teach school in Mexico or C.A. ... with a teacher like him... fyou would not be enough.

The original question was just silly. Most of us break at least one law a day often without even realizing it or trying. Pretending that illegal immigrants are any better or any worse because they broke an immigration law instead of a traffic violation is just stereotyping at its worst.

I read it that murder, rape, assault (violent crimes), were all more somehow more likely to be committed by illegal aliens simply because the person/people broke an immigration law. A so called "slippery slope" argument. Maybe I misread or misunderstood it.
If it was stated that breaking immigration laws necessitates breaking other laws like the ones you mentioned, I would agree with you. More laws may be broken, yes, but it is all really a continuation of the same original crime from my perspective.

The problems in our public schools is LACK of respect for adults/authority. The kids know what they can get away with...The BLAME clearly lies with the coddling of our youth beginning with parents too busy [or uninterested] in instilling good manners & respect at home and extending to the state Dept.of Educations around the country which have literally tied the hands of school teachers & school administrators from disciplining these unruly spoiled brats because of fear of law suits brought by the parents. It's now a vicious circle.
While it's easy to place BLAME on ILLEGAL immigration for some of our country's ills...I'd bet MOST of the troublemakers are born & bred right here in the U.S.

I've heard some teachers and school administrators make the point that the Hispanic students are among the better behaved, respectful and hardest workers in the high school. It's the white, upper middle-class to upper class kids you've got to watch out for.

I live in an affluent, lily white Massachusetts suburb, where you'd be hard-pressed to find more than 2 or 3 minority families, let alone ILLEGAL immigrant families.
There have been numerous incidents at our High School involving those lily white kids born right here in the USA. And the "incidents" mostly involve these sweet kids telling teaches off...and VERY FEW being disciplined for it.

I would never dream of behaving in the manner that many children and adults do because my parent's would not tolerate that type of behavior.
However, I still feel teachers have thier hands tied. I read a while back, a city back east was going to stop publishing the name of graduating students in the local paper. Why you ask? They feel it may hurt the children that did not graduate. How pathetic is that....?

I am blaming the parents, and the system. I happen to have more respect for teachers than any one of our damned politicians. When I say thier hands are tied, I mean in a political way. If a kids yelled at me, I would come down so hard on her/him it would make thier head spin. How about a Dunce hat and put the kid in the corner of the room. But is that allowed any more? NO! Why? Politicians aren't really responsible for "tying the hands" of teachers, unless you are willing to blame the thousands of elected school board members to a small degree for conforming to the realities of the current legal environment.
It is mostly due to potential liability from lawsuits. It turns out that parents don't want teachers or administrators touching their kids at all. It is a reasonable stance by the parents. I can see how they are concerned about that.
How do you solve the problem. We cannot take away the legitimate right parents' right to sue. There are legitimate cases where teachers/administrators obviously go too far and limiting lawsuits might get them a blank check to turn schools into Abu Ghraib. The school corps. cannot afford one slip-up by a teacher, so they will limit what punishment can be given often discounting corporal punishment.
I don't think there is a viable alternative to the way it is currently done. If you change the system, you will inevitably just shift the problem to a new area.
The way the school system works is a given. It cannot practically be altered at this point.
Therefore the focus of any criticism should be on the part that can change -- the parents. That is the real failure. Today's parents just aren't doing as good a job as previous generations. It is really that simple.

The problems of discipline in our schools is widespread and includes a variety of demographics. Including white kids born here. Parents don't do the job at home...and teachers & administrators often find their hands tied thanks to the grand Pooh-Bahs running our educational system in this country that have decided that PUNISHMENT might hurt the kids feelings...oh and piss off the parents who could file a law suit because junior got yelled at.

that are not involved, Jeter2. Some years ago, my youngest came home from school one day and basically told me I couldn't physically discipline him. He got that information from his teachers. Outside of one small slap (that scared him more than hurt him), we did not resort to physical discipline with any of the kids. The small slap was my response to him for using language I would not tolerate, never have heard him use it since. Couple this with the "feel good" climate (don't list grades, graduates, no awards for achievement, etc) of the education system along with parents that are not involved, too busy earning a living to be involved, are also children of the "feel good" climate, who want to be best friends rather than parents and you can see why there is a decline in respect for authority in this country.
And I did mention as much in my 2 prior posts. The Dept. of Education, as well as School Boards are impeding teachers & administrators from being able to discipline the unruly kids in school. I still maintain they are MOSTLY afraid of the parents who threaten law suits if junior gets dragged down to the office. No doubt teachers & administrators are ALSO being indoctrinated into a system that rewards mediocrity and discourages competition.
One of our boys [we have 3] once accused his Mom of being a drug addict because she was drinking a cup of coffee....the teacher had included Caffeine as part of her lesson about addictive drugs and said people drinking coffee were addicts!. We laughed about it, BUT that's only the tip of the iceberg of course.
Back when I was a kid classrooms were set up in rows. Worked just fine. Back when our 3 sons were in elementary school my wife went to pick them up but thought she'd stop in to visit her best friend--a first grade teacher--she found the teacher's desk placed by the door, her back to the desks & chairs. My wife laughed & asked "What are you the receptionist?" Her friend rolled her eyes and explained that at a recent Teachers Workshop *the powers that be* thought that setting up the classroom this way showed the kids --you trusted them. Keep in mind these are 6 year olds! Nutty if you ask me...

Caffeine is a drug, but just like cigarettes it isn't dangerously mind altering except for that temporary boosts it gives you. My kid's 28 and of course caffeine was included in her lists of drugs along with nicotine when she was being taught about drugs and drug use. We discussed it and mutually agreed that coffee used in moderation is fine and not harmful to one’s health. Over use of caffeine is associated with some medical conditions, including kidney stones and it aggravates fibrocystic disease of the breast, which is a common condition in women. Well wouldn’t you know it, as soon as my daughter got in college she became a caffeine addict for the usual reason… pulling all nighters to finish term papers so you load up on caffeine. Now maybe when her breasts start aching she lighten up on the coffee. I must confess however that I must have a morning cup of coffee to get me going.

Jeter2 (think I probably have more than a couple of years on you). When I was in school, I knew whatever problem I got into at school would be minor to the discipline I would face at home (no physical contact, unless you count swamping out cow pens and digging ditches by hand as extreme). Now, it seems, parents are more involved in seeing that the teacher is "punished" when Johnny acts up (because it ain't really his fault, you know). Respect for authority needs to come from home, but as noted before today's parents grew up in the more "permissive" education atmosphere and this needs to change before change can be made up the line.

I know what you are talking about. I want my children to be conscious of what they put in their bodies, but it is just different way of teaching than when we were kids.
I have a story similar to yours. I was standing in line at the grocery checkout with my then 9 or 10 year old daughter. As I was putting some beer on the counter to purchase (BTW, I only drink 2 or 3 times a year and even then, my max is 2 drinks). Anyway as I am putting up the beer, my daughter says "Daddy, I don't like it when you drink." in her sweet mousy voice. I was really caught off guard and a little embarrassed because it could be interpreted easily like I was some angry alcoholic child/wife-beater. I was too shocked to say anything in response and the cashier gave me a suspicious sideways glance. It turns out that my daughter just learned in class about the dangers of drugs (including alcohol) and was speaking in regards to the general dangers of alcohol.
I guess I really don't mind her thinking alcohol is bad, so it was hard to really say much about it to her later.
We pretty severely limit the amount of caffeine the kids drink as well. Something interesting I saw about Caffeine (maybe a real doctor can tell me if it is true), but on ER, a TV show that seems to pride itself on accuracy, a guy came in with cardiac arrest. They gave him a shot of caffeine to stimulate his heart.
Maybe the medical effect of caffeine has been underplayed.

Illegal immigration is a problem, but the hate displayed toward illegal immigrants can easily spill over to legal immigrants.
I have a big problem with this attitude towards immigrants. Racism is out of vogue in this country for most people, those millions of racist in America didn't just disappear they've either had a change of heart (Unlikely), gone underground or just shifted their sights to immigrants.
The issue is illegal immigration, not legal immigration. There are racists sprinkled in every ideology in every region of this country, sadly. But to accuse those who want tough immigration laws and our borders strictly enforced as having any racist element is inflammatory and unfair.

1. Bill makes a point in relation to hispanic drop-out rates. Among youth ages 16 to 24, Hispanics accounted for 40 percent of all high school dropouts in 2004. That stat in and of itself doesn't look good. But one must also consider, that hispanics only made up 17 percent of the total youth population.
2. Bill's premise and that of the callers is that hispanics somehow spread their 3rd world values or at least that is the fear-mongering tactic employed in his rant. Well let's see what the truth is. Dropout rates of young people ages 16 to 24 in the civilian, non-institutionalized population gradually declined between 1972 and 2004, from 15 percent to a low of 10 percent in 2003, where the rate remained in 2004.
So, it looks like Miffy & Biff are not totally buying into the "3rd World Values" of Juan & Maria.
3. Now the following is not significant, however it is progress. Rates among Hispanic youth have declined from 30 percent in 1998 to 24 percent in 2004.

I'm from Sweden. ANY corporal punishment of children is illegal. We did not get any grades in school until second semester of 7th grade (age 14).

When the classrooms at a elementry schoool local to me started to teach the kids in class in English, and then turned to those and spoke in spanish, it raised a eyebrow. Not because they are "Spanish Speaking, or,"Brown skinned". I just started to think about the time lost. That would mean, my kid is only getting half a education. Right or wrong?

The goverment places much MORE emphasis on war (funding, in all ways, not just Iraq), and the rest of the monies left over get squabbled over like those seagulls in Finding Nemo (Mine! Mine!). The education system is BROKE, in more ways than one, and will not be fixed unless we ALL demand a paradigm shift in this country's thinking about what is TRUELY important for ALL of us...
In Santa Ana, California, the school district just extended the Christmas vacation (Oops, sorry for the foul language. I mean "Winter break") to 3 weeks because every year at that time the illegal population heads to Mexico to see la familia. They weren't making it back in the normal 2 weeks so the district was losing out on state money and decided to give them extra time. The school system is so broken, it's beyond corruption.

First how many people (right, left, including myself) consider themselves moderate. I don't believe I have read too many "moderates" on this board and I tend to be more in the middle than most. Still I would not call myself a moderate, just moreso.
Second, yes illegal immigration is a problem. However, I don't think "the third world value system" is corrupting the schools. Let's look at it this way in my area there are a number of very wealthy families -- kids drive late model BMW's, Volvo's, and a slew of decked out sportcars -- they come from money and never had to work a day in their life, a life of privilege. And they are as, if not more, like to find their way into our newspapers for doing something stupid. Here's the upshot like most immigrants legal or illegal it will be the better, stronger, those with the most initiative that will immigrate -- it is always the way. I doubt this will affect the school value system negatively.
Are these people taking advantage of a crappy system -- yes. Are they illegal -- yes. Will some of them commit crime -- yes, people always import their crime with them not standing their illegal or legal immigration status.
The question is how to fix two broke systems education and immigration, which each will have to be fixed in turn by itself or we are it the deep weeds as a country.

I have had classes where the majority were Latin nationals. They had exactly the same spread of behaviors as you will find anywhere else on earth. Some were wonderful. Some were awful. Lots fell in the middle.
I did notice this. In some cases there seemed to be an urgency to their learning that I didn't find elsewhere. They seemed to know and sense that they were going to need everything they could get to survive.

Sir - I come from a third world country, India, and most of the immigrants who come to this country work very hard in school to better themselves and America. Many of my classmates were immigrants who came here and worked hard and are now very successful in all fields of American life. Just look at Vinod Khosla, Sergeyi Brin and Andy Groove and you will see an immigrant education ethic that should be encouraged rather than vilified as Mr. O'Reilly has so uneloquently done.
