In a January 22 report on the Justice Department Office of the Inspector General's (OIG) review of the handling of the Mark Foley case, CNN correspondent Carol Costello made no mention of a finding by the OIG that the Justice Department and the FBI "inaccurately suggested" that actions by the nonprofit group Citizens for Responsibility and Ethics in Washington (CREW) "were the cause of the FBI's decision not to investigate the emails." Costello omitted this finding, despite a prior CNN report, as Media Matters for America noted, that the FBI blamed CREW for its inaction on the Foley case. In addition, an earlier report by Costello on the 4 p.m. ET edition of The Situation Room failed to tell viewers that the report found the FBI had misled the media on its reasons for not acting on the emails sent by Foley, who resigned from Congress after the sexually explicit messages he sent to underage former pages were made public.

Similarly, during the January 22 edition of Fox News' Special Report, host Brit Hume also left out OIG's vindication of CREW despite a Special Report story that aired in October 2006 reporting that the FBI blamed CREW for its inaction on the Foley emails, as Media Matters also noted.

By contrast, in its January 23 article on the OIG's report, The Washington Post noted that CREW had been vindicated:

The FBI should have acted last summer to protect underage congressional pages after it was given "troubling" electronic messages sent by then-Rep. Mark Foley (R-Fla.), according to a report released yesterday.

The review by Justice Department Inspector General Glenn A. Fine also found that FBI and Justice officials misled the news media last fall when they asserted that an activist group that first provided the FBI with Foley's messages had not been cooperative and had withheld vital information from investigators.

In fact, Fine's report found that the group -- Citizens for Ethics and Responsibility in Washington, or CREW -- had notified the FBI within days of obtaining the electronic communications in July. But the FBI never asked for additional information from the group and never sought to interview the former page in Louisiana who received the messages from Foley, the report said.

From the 5 p.m. ET segment of the January 22 edition of CNN's The Situation Room:

COSTELLO: The Justice Department is criticizing the FBI for its handling of the Mark Foley case. An internal report says the bureau should have moved to protect White House pages when it first learned of the former congressman's explicit Internet messages last July. The report doesn't find any misconduct by the FBI, but it does fault the bureau for making inaccurate statements about why it didn't launch an investigation. There is no comment from the FBI, at least not yet.

From the 4 p.m. ET segment of the January 22 edition of CNN's The Situation Room:

COSTELLO: Their job is to uphold the law, but the FBI says it could have done that better in the case of the former Republican congressman who sent explicit Internet messages to young congressional workers. That's the conclusion of a Justice Department report. It says the FBI should have acted instead of declining when it learned Mark Foley sent the messages to a former House page. The report did not find any misconduct by FBI officials.

From the January 22 edition of Fox News' Special Report with Brit Hume:

HUME: The Justice Department's own inspector general today criticized the FBI for the way it handled controversial emails from former Florida Congressman Mark Foley to a congressional page. The group Citizens for Responsibility and Ethics in Washington, or CREW, provided copies of the messages to the FBI last July. The inspector general says Foley's language was troubling enough that bureau authorities should have followed up by notifying supervisors of the page's program. Foley resigned in August-late September -- office in late September when the emails became public.

Of course CNN & Fox did not cover the vindication of CREW - we all know that left-wing organizations such as CREW are inherently guilty. Nor would any responsible broadcaster question the FBI's lies, nor the FBI's motives for lying - after all, 9/11 changed everything. We are at war, peeps, and we cannot allow divisiveness about such things as mere ethics or predation of our children, to obstruct our cause!

Now, if only someone (other than Bungle) could rise to tell us what our cause IS?

So what is CREW alleged to have done here? Withheld Foley's messages?

There were two parts to the lie: 1) that CREW held the emails for months before notifying the FBI (with side allegations that they were a Dem plot from the beginning); and that CREW refused to provide the requisite information (including having severely redacted those items provided) to allow the FBI to launch an investigation.

The allegations came out after the primary and too late for Foley to be replaced with another Republican on the ballot.  A Democrat won his seat in November.

CREW was falsely accused of holding on to the damaging information just long enough to maximize the loss to the Republicans.

I don't know why Republicans are so paranoid.  Seems like when you're that corrupt, you should expect a scandal or two every month.

IF THE GOP WERE STILL IN MAJORITY ...

... such admissions as this blatant attempt to pass blame and blame "the LEFT" for incompetence and wrongdoing FALSELY, would simply stand.

What a difference an election makes. What sniveling FEAR these partisan operatives in the Justice Department are feeling, knowing that their lies and excuses will no longer be simply accepted, with NO oversight or questioning from anybody, least of all a GOP Congress.

Of course, it will be a while -- if EVER -- that the rightwing media outlets will discover that they are no longer getting away with making up "news" which serves the rightwing/Republican purposes. They will continue to parrot DRUDGE and every other smear source for their "news" material which accuses and smears Dems without any proof. But they will NOW pay a price, because the TRUTH will become known as well, and their reports will be exposed for what they are: Partisan Propaganda.

No longer will outfits like the FBI be complicit in the rightwing media's smear schemes; after all, with a Congress which can provide oversight, investigate, and hold public officials accountable ... the party is over. In fact, the FCC might even be compelled to intervene to clean up our public airwaves, and Fox News might be REQUIRED to ACTUALLY be "fair and balanced", or else LOSE their licence to broadcast. Or maybe, with an eye towards "truth in advertising" laws, be required to stop using the word "news" in relation to what they do.

      Thank GOD!

        Tex,

Do you ever feel compelled to provide any factual backup for your rants and raves against the scurrilous "rightwing" in our society?  Or for your ridiculous accusations against the "complicit FBI" or the biased media that "parrots Drudge" and smears Democrats all day long?

I know these are your daily talking points and I know nobody here will ever ask you to back any of it up, so I ask, respectfully - can you?

Tommy, once again you seemed to be on a mission before having made some basic attempt at comprehension of the item.  For example, as for Tex's "complicit FBI" comment, did you even read the Washington Post excerpt above?  If so, what is it about "FBI and Justice officials mis[leading] the news media last fall" that you don't understand? As for the "parrot[ing] Drudge," Tex may have been referring to the allegations put forth by Drudge as documented by http://mediamatters.org/items/200610090010

Yes, I read it.  This is not, as Tex claims, the FBI complicit in rightwing media smear schemes.  It is hardly that nefarious, except in Tex's mind.

He is always making these blanket, smearing generalizations about this rightwing conspiracy or another by cherry picking examples that don't even rise to that level themselves.  He is never asked for any backup or proof, which is what I did.

Also, if I swooped in here and made similar accusations against the left wing smear machines out to get poor Republicans - I would immediatlely be called on for links or absolute proof.  Tex should be held to the same standard, but he isn't.

You're redefining complicity.  One does not have to be intimately involved in some nefarious scheme in order to be complicit.  The FBI, through their comments, helped foster the idea that the entire scandal was a leftwing plot, as asserted by others in the media.  That's complicity.

He is always making these blanket, smearing generalizations about this rightwing conspiracy or another by cherry picking examples that don't even rise to that level themselves.

Speaking of generalizations...nothing to respond to here.

He is never asked for any backup or proof, which is what I did.

He's never asked...which is what you did? Uh huh.  You mean never asked by anyone, but you?  Actually, I recall challenging him a few times in the past.  So, you're wrong.

Also, if I swooped in here and made similar accusations against the left wing smear machines out to get poor Republicans - I would immediatlely be called on for links or absolute proof.  Tex should be held to the same standard, but he isn't.

More generalizations again...and dubious at that.  But as for this topic, you're wrong, Tommy.  The evidence exists as presented previously.  You can ignore it, change the subject, etc., but that doesn't change the veracity of your claims.

OT, but in Jon Stewart's "Moment of Zen" there was some video of the end of the SOTU speech, with some blonde commentator calling the Democrats "media whores" for being polite and shaking Bush's hand.  Did anyone else see that?

Yes, I saw it (Fox, of course). When Bush was leaving and signing autographs some dems were shaking his hand and patting him on the bac, hence the media whore comment. First thing to pop in my mind was Dirty Laundry "bubble headed bleach blonde comes on at 9:00..."
