O'Reilly wouldn't call Penn "anti-American" minutes after Factor referred to Penn as "anti-American"

On the January 29 edition of Fox News' The O'Reilly Factor, blogger and Fox News contributor Michelle Malkin claimed that "Jane Fonda's anti-American position has never changed over the last several decades." Host Bill O'Reilly responded: "[Y]ou say it's anti-American. You know that the Fondas and [Sean] Penns are going to say, 'Listen, I'm as American as you are, Michelle Malkin. I just see things differently.' And I'm willing to give them the benefit of that doubt. I don't want to say that they're anti-American." However, just minutes earlier during the "Talking Points Memo" segment, onscreen text had referred to Penn as "anti-American actor Sean Penn." While that text was on the screen, O'Reilly referred to Penn as "far-left actor Sean Penn."

factor

To close the segment, O'Reilly asked Malkin if she had "any personal message for Sean Penn," to which she replied, "I'm glad that he's gone now from D.C.," before adding: "Jeff Spicoli for president." Penn played stoner Jeff Spicoli in the 1982 movie Fast Times at Ridgemont High.

From the January 29 edition of Fox News' The O'Reilly Factor:

O'REILLY: But to far-left actor Sean Penn, who consistently sides with America's enemies, that really isn't much of a problem at all.

[...]

MALKIN: Jane Fonda's anti-American position has never changed over the last several decades. And I think that it's clear that the concern for the troops that the anti-war left has shown is cynical. The compassion that they pose for the Iraqi civilians is totally disingenuous. And their opposition to the war is not rooted in principle, but in clear Bush hatred and in a desire to see this country fail.

We talked about those poll results last week showing that a hard, significant portion of this country wants us to fail there. And that's what we saw voiced over and over again this weekend.

And I think that there's another ugly aspect to the anti-war movement. It was not just sort of the peace-loving '60s throwbacks that we saw in front of the camera. But we saw the ugly side of the anti-war movement this weekend, too.

And you won't see that on a lot of the mainstream media coverage. People spitting at an Iraq war veteran, vandalism on the Capitol steps, rocks thrown at military recruitment centers. This is what it's about. It was a big temper tantrum. And that's all the left has to offer.

O'REILLY: All right, but you say it's anti-American. You know that the Fondas and Penns are going to say, "Listen, I'm as American as you are, Michelle Malkin. I just see things differently." And I'm willing to give them the benefit of that doubt. I don't want to say that they're anti-American.

[...]

O'REILLY: All right, I gotta load up Michelle for one final -- Michelle, any personal message for Sean Penn?

MALKIN: I'm glad that he's gone now from D.C.

O'REILLY: Yeah. I just -- I was wondering about the hair that was going on up there with him.

MALKIN: Jeff Spicoli for president.

I think it's more of an issue of how you "do" incessantly, yet somehow you are to be commended for one instance of "don't".

Like how I'm not gonna pat Fox News on the back for the few times they've actually reported something accurately. They've still got a lot of 'splainin to do.

Tommy, a valid catch, but in truth in appears Bull OhReally? can blame it on a producer (or someone else in the food chain) because from what I see, Bull himself did not utter the words "un-American" when referring to Penn.

I'd be surprised if he doesn't approve those graphics before the show.  After all, they are supposed to correspond to what he's saying, right?  Also he might have a screen that shows those graphics while he's speaking.  And is this live?  If not, then the graphic could be easily altered post-production, if anyone notices the disparity.

You might be right, but it seems like awfully sloppy work for prime time, on the part of O'Reilly and his production staff as well.

OhReally? knew what was going on as far as the graphic, I'm sure. Just pointing out the plausible deniability on his part (as weak as that defense is). He is correct in saying, "I didn't say Unamerican." But we all know that is what he meant.

That's what's truly amazing the Cons...

They always blame it on someone else.  They simply can't stand up and take responsibility.  It shows a great lack of character, and I think one of the main reasons the American people tossed them out in November.

I could only watch for a few minutes when she took over for O'Reilly a few weeks back.  She is way out of her league when talking to just about anyone other than Bill.  I think that is why he puts her on so much.  She is the heir apparent to Bill's crap kingdom.

        LEATHER HELMET

Your victim is a famous war protester who turned out to be correct in fighting for peace in Vietnam.  Just like Iraq, thousands died in vain in Vietnam too.   This passionate war protester was trying to get the then Rupublicant President Nixon to give peace a chance.  Nixon was raining cluster bombs on North Vietnam when he should have been negotiating in Paris Peace Talks.

In July of 1972 the then ambassador George H. W. Bush called Fonda a liar.  Bush cancelled a press conference after Fonda released filmed evidence of her claim, with Bush saying, "I think that the best thing I can do on the subject is to shut up."  In 2004, her former husband Tom Hayden renewed claims that "Fonda was right and Bush was lying".

Fonda said that war veterans she had met while on her book tour had urged her to speak out against the Iraq War.  On January 27, 2007, Fonda participated in an anti-war rally held on the National Mall in Washington, D.C., declaring that "silence is no longer an option."

Jane Fonda made some mistakes in her efforts  to effect peace and has admitted and apologized for those mistakes.  Her heart was in the right place to work for peace.  As a Vietnam Veteran myself I say thank you Jane Fonda.

LH inquires: If you can't call Jane Fonda anti-American, who qualifies?

How about...... An Administration infested with a cabal of NeoConmen WHO initiated the following, Distorted and fabricated the rationale for initiating a War against Iraq in contradiction of the UN Charter, The Nuremberg War Principles, Violations of the Geneva Conventions, Numerous Hague Conventions, lied or at the very least misled Congress, outed an undercover WMD  expert in addition to compromising the  'Cut-Out front Company, "Brewster-Jennings" which was tracking the real WMD emanating out of the Ukraine along the Turkey conduit, thus inducing a number of operatives to be terminated ,caused the US Military to be ill-equipped in Body armor, Vehicle armor, communication gear up to and including an inadequate supply of munitions according to today's release of the Pentagon's Inspector General's Report to be presented to Congress.

AND........ Consummately destroyed the Infrastructure of a modern and SECULAR  Arab state, responsible for in excess of 600.000 Civilian casualties many of which are the elderly and children, caused a flight of professionals , thus further aggravating the situation where WE now are enagaged in a Civil War among competing factions with centuries-old internecine tribal rivalries, causing a rash of Terror-sponsored death squads, competing in a frenzy of blood-lusting, all the while OUR TROOPS are supposed to act as referees to this vicious carnage.

Created a 'War -Profiteer's Carnival -like atmosphere where obscene profits have been made witrh NO Oversight of US Taxpayer's Monies (Your and Mine) including the pilferage of some 8 Billion US Greenbacks brought in on pallets after unloading from C-130's into the waiting arms of a world-wide consortium of renegade mercenaries, SOLDIERS of FORTUNE Who are often engaged in Black-OPS against our Own troops to further the grand designs of War-Profiteers, no doubt having a great time sun -tanning in the Caymans.

And Finally, Have caused the US Military to be overstretched to the point of  breaking the Army and US Marine Corps, back-door drafted Young men and women for up to 4 deployments, many of which are suffering from advanced Post Traumatic Stress Syndrome, thus further creating situations where their units are put at risk in an armed theatre.

SO LH, Have I covered adequatelty what the label Anti- American constitutes???

          Navy Guy,

right on. I would say that the ultimate act of anti-americanism would be to throw away the lives of the men and women who step up to make the ultimate sacrifice for their country. Anti-americanism is lying to the people of the U.S and sending their kids off to be slaughtered in a country that had NOTHING to do with the attack on the U.S. Anti-amercanism would be leaving the country without an adequate military defense for the homeland. Anti-americanism would be using the nations most vital resources (its young people) as cannon fodder in what was always going to be a repeat of Vietnam. Anti-americanism would be taking the word of a drooling idiot as he mutters lines like "bring 'em on", "smoke em out" and "dead or alive". Anti-americanism would be talking tough about the world's number one terrorist and then doin sweet FA for 5 years about bringing him to justice.

People who call Bush a murderer are often called anti-american. Why, because they care about the lives of those kids who are dying every day over there - those kids have the ultimate courage - they deserve the protection of those who have the courage to stand up and call a liar a liar - Bush is a criminal and a disgrace to the office that he stole - he's too dim to understand this. The great challenge is for all of us to remember the thousands killed on 9/11 as well as the thousands killed needlessly in Iraq and make one simple commitment - NEVER AGAIN!

            1. Who are you talking to?

            2. What are you trying to say?

      Food for thought...

What about evangelical Christians whose fundamentalist beliefs in God and the inerrancy of the bible are so strong that they speak out in strong protest against American laws and customs that they find inconsistent with their religion? Gay marriage (where it is legal), for example? Abortion? Stem cell research? Medical termination of life support under certain conditions? Teaching of evolution?  Separation of church and state generally?  Deep down, do they have in their hearts more loyalty to their God than their country? Are they considered Anti-American, too?  Why is it that protesting a war that many, if not most, Americans consider wrong, based on deep convictions and beliefs, is considered Anti-American? It doesn't make sense... except if you add politics to the equation.  People should learn and respect the Constitution rather than political parties.

Michelle Malkin is hot.  I may not agree with everything you say, but you are still hot.  I know Asian women are not usually into black men.  But if you ever come to the darkside, baby I am here. ; )

It has nothing constructive to add to the conversation, but I gotta agree with you.  Malkin a easy on the eyes, but makes my ears bleed.  I would suggest Lara Logan slap Malkin around a bit, but that would degrade Logan, and she already does it so well verbally.

indeed, this remark is totally offtopic, but i would like to add my opinion to it. She looks nice, but when she was talking, and we had here in the camera, i felt repulsed by this woman. I tried it with the sound off, and when you saw here talking, I felt as if Malkin was trying to let her hatred spew through her mouth. Hatred can make anyone look ugly.

I would appreciate it though, if this discussion doesn't go too far, because it's against my principles to judge someone on looks, i just meant this as a side remark. For me, it's important to listen to arguments, not to judge the way people look or talk.

And as to the content of what she says, well, that warrents another mmfa post imo. So much misinformation bundled together...

      Irony,

Speaking as a Christian, I agree with everything you said.

Small correction: That's "Talking Points," not "Talking Points Memo." That's another animal altogether.
