Robertson: Too much plastic surgery gives people "Oriental" eyes

On the February 7 edition of the Christian Broadcasting Network's The 700 Club, host Pat Robertson said that people who have received too much plastic surgery "got the eyes like they're Oriental" while he put his fingers up to the side of his face.

Robertson and CBN special features producer Kristi Watts were talking about Fox News host Greta Van Susteren's plastic surgery. Robertson said that Van Susteren "looks great." Watts then asked whether Robertson had "seen someone who got [plastic surgery] too much." Robertson replied, "Yeah, they got the eyes like they're Oriental, and, you know, it's all pulled."

As Media Matters for America noted, Robertson has called Islam a "Christian heresy" and said that "Jewish people" are "very thrifty" and "extraordinarily good business people." Media Matters also noted that after officials in Orlando, Florida, voted in 1998 to fly rainbow flags from city lampposts during the annual Gay Days event at Disney World, Robertson issued the city a warning: "I don't think I'd be waving those flags in God's face if I were you. ... [A] condition like this will bring about the destruction of your nation. It'll bring about terrorist bombs, it'll bring earthquakes, tornadoes and possibly a meteor."

From the February 7 edition of the Christian Broadcasting Network's The 700 Club:

ROBERTSON: You know there's a lady named Greta Van Susteren, who's on Fox.

WATTS: Yeah.

ROBERTSON: Got a very popular --

WATTS: Oh, I saw her.

ROBERTSON: She looked gorgeous last night, but she had a really serious facial deal. And it did a wonder --

WATTS: Sister needed help.

ROBERTSON: Sister got the help.

WATTS: Sister -- she needed some help, yeah.

ROBERTSON: But she got it. She just looks great, and she's so popular.

WATTS: But have you ever seen someone who got it too much, and so they come up to you, and they're like, "Pat, how are you doing? It's so good to see you."

ROBERTSON: Yeah, they got the eyes like they're Oriental, and, you know, it's all pulled. So, make sure you do it right. But -- it's -- that's one way you can go, but it'll cost you five or six thousand dollars probably. All right. What else?

As a Chinese-American, I'd like to be the first to say it on this thread: F**k you, Pat Robertson!

In a perfect world this would be the scandal that finally gets the 700 Club kicked off the ABC Family channel, but I'm not holding my breath.

I never thought I'd agree with you guys on this one and I know that I probably never will again, but I happen to believe that "Rev" Robertson is a bigoted, racist, anti-Semtic idea who does nothing but make me and my fellow Republicans look bad.

I am way lefty liberal, and I didnt agree with them but I still respected the Buckleys, Goldwaters and Danforths. Today we get Frists, Santorums, Coulters, and Robertsons. I would be incensed if I were you

Too much plastic surgery actually makes you look like Michael Jackson ;-)

Look Robertson is so clueless he probably doesn't even understand that he might have offended anyone.

This guy should be put out to pasture. Permanently.

Now THIS thread reminded me of something I heard Keith Olbermann utter several nights ago. And perhaps my time here at MMFA has made be a tad more sensitive to slurs, but I thought Keith might have made one towards the Japanese. So I went and looked for the transcript.

      I report...you decide.

Olbermann: "Now, here are three men in Japan smelling their cell phones.  You sick freaks.  Oh, wait, this is another one of these weird Japanese fetish deals."

Well... I didn't like the tie Keith was wearing th other night.   ;>)

Doris... Lighten up.  When you compare the absolute luncay on FOX News that passes for "fair and balanced" reporting to what Olberman does, Olberman is a breath of fresh air. I know Olberman doesn't always hit the mark but compared to the competition I enjoy his humor and sometimes informative show.  Olberman doesn't walk on water but he sure as hell can make you laugh at other people who think they do.

That was not against the ethnicity of being Japanese.  It was because Japan produces a lot of those kabuki films.  The ones where people do some really sick things.  If it was Russia or Poland that had an industry like that, he probably would have said Russian or Polish.  It was no big deal.

        THANK YOU.

Well, if you think Olbermann out of line for that joke, make a rukus about it, e-mail him your concern, etc.  I'm willing to be that unlike O'Reilly and his ilk, Olbermann would apologize for being insensitive.

Then again, the comment was made in the context of his Oddball segment which is not supposed to be taken seriously.  O'Reilly, et al would make such a comment in all seriousness.

Jeter, I don't think that Olbermann's comment could be considered a racial slur. If he had used the word "j*p" then that would be just outright racist, but pointing out that the Japanese have a booming fetish industry is, at the very worst, marginally ethnocentric. And it's only ethnocentric in the sense that it promotes looking at that aspect of Japanese popular culture as some exotic oddity.

I think Olbermann is referring to some of the clips he's played on his Oddball segment. There's the one that made the rounds on the "Internets" a long while back where some young girls (12-ish?) are competing, I think, to be in an all girl band.  To make the cut, though, they have to strap a pork chop onto their head and then poke their head up into a glass container where a hungry iguana is rumbling around.  The crowd cheers as the lizzie gets closer to one of the terrified girls.

I'm not making this up, though I might be wrong about what kind of reptile it was.

      Consider Robertson's audience...

I'd love to see the demographics on Robertson's viewing audience.  I'd bet they're even older than Bill O'Reilly's. They probably think "Oriental" is one of those "politically correct" words Pastor Pat had to use on the air instead of something more colloquial... a real progressive that Pastor Pat is.

Right, and forty years ago when I was six years old and recited that rhyme to my mother she sat me down and explained why it was inappropriate for a Christian to make fun of other groups of people.  Back then, it was referred to as "politeness" and "good manners".  Nowadays it seems folks are so intent on protecting their right to offend others that they throw around perjoratives like "politically correct" as if it was a bad thing.

Besides, "PC" these days is stuff like not saying bad things about George W. Bush, not pointing out that Cheney's daughter is gay, etc.

I would argue that the whole thing about Kerry's botched joke was nothing more than a sterling example of a conservative political correctness issue.

Funny how the conservatives have taken this idea that they claim to hate and have created their own version of it.

This is some funny schizzle! In a way, the old con man is quite correct that if you don't get a good surgeon, your face will look pulled and contorted. Now, the question is whether or not a severe face lift makes a caucasian look asian. I would probably be more worked up about his term "oriental" rather than asian, but that's in the deep-end of the politically-correct pool. Never seems to be a lifeguard around.

What do you expect from a tired, old fool who's made millions conning our eldery Aunt Dorothy out of ther Social Security money in exchange for a mass media group prayer.

However I don't get why saying someone might look oriental after plasatic surgery that pulls the skin around they eye tight is offensive or racist?  Yes, I see the picture of Robertson pulling the skin back from his eyes. So what?

Someone made the comment earlier that it makes one look like Michael Jackson.   Was that racist?

Yeah, you're really ignorant. Here't the logic. Pat Robertson pulled up his eye-lids and says now he looks like an "oriental." This is actually the less offensive part. 'Cuz as you say, there's nothing wrong saying that it's likely that a Swedish person is blonde. BUT, and this is a BIG BUT, (given that fact that you sounded like a meathead), he did it in the context of a botched facejob. So he's essentially saying that all "Oriental" people are so ugly that they look like someone with a botched face job, a.k.a. Michael Jackson.

        Got that? Sigh...
