Newsweek joins Romney swooners: Darman and Thomas call him "buff and handsome"

A February 26 Newsweek article by Jonathan Darman and Evan Thomas described former Massachusetts Gov. Mitt Romney (R) as "buff and handsome in late middle age."

As Media Matters for America has noted, MSNBC's Chris Matthews has also applauded Romney's looks, stating that the former governor "has the perfect chin, the perfect hair." Also, on the February 13 edition of Hardball with Chris Matthews, MSNBC political analyst Pat Buchanan said that Romney was an "an extremely handsome man." As Media Matters also documented, The Politico's Roger Simon has claimed that Romney "radiates vigor," while Mike Allen, former White House correspondent for Time (now chief political correspondent for The Politico), touted Romney as someone who "looks like a president."

From the February 26 edition of Newsweek:

There is something a little too good to be true about Mitt Romney. The former governor of Massachusetts and candidate for the Republican presidential nomination is so buff and handsome in late middle age that when a brochure from a recent campaign showed him standing, bare-chested, on a swimming float, he was accused of sexually pandering to women voters. Romney, who is still married to his high-school sweetheart, doesn't drink, doesn't smoke and doesn't swear. His wife has said that, in private, he never even raises his voice.

Yeah Romney is a Ken Doll.

BUT the media is also falling all over its self swooning over Obama as handsome and the photo of him frolicking in the surf was all over the place.

I give this thread a big so what.

That quote about Romney reminds me of the Police Captain's quote in Falling Down: "I don't like you. You know why? You don't curse. I don't trust a man who doesn't curse."

I tend to agree. There is something fundamentally odd about someone who doesn't swear. It's like they are devoid of basic human emotions. I'm reminded of the characters William H. Macy plays in both Pleasantville and Fargo. Okay, enough movie references. But I do think a person can be too clean cut. I don't think any Democrats would vote for him. He certainly isn't endearing himself to the NASCAR wing of the Republican Party with that whole "clean cut" image.

Golly... maybe they can get Ceorge Clooney to play Romney in his biopic.  And Nancy Pelosi is much better looking than Hillary Clinton.John NcCain is old and has that icky scar stuff on his jaw. Giuliani is balding... yuck. Why are all of these unattractive people running for President? (But George W. Bush is a regular Marlboro Man... just ask Karl Rove!) Don't they know Americans read celebrity magazines like People Magazine (amomg many others) and expect their leaders to have movie star appeal? Are there no serious media left? ...promotong superficial crap such as Mitt Romney's chin? What is happening in this country?

This is the third time in as many weeks that you've wandered onto a thread and started your rant about how everyone hates Romney and Mormons like you. In each case, no anti-Mormon statements were made. In fact, there haven't been that many anti-Romney points made either.

The attacks have been against those in the media who seem to be obsessed with appearances while the world is going to hell all around us.

We are at war in two different countries. We are threatening a third. Our military is stretched to the breaking point. The country is more divided than at any time since 1865.

And what do they think is most important as we look for new leadership. A good chin.

You really need to grow up a bit and pay attention.

I've only ever seen a few anti-Mormon comments, and they're always from the same people. They usually get removed, though.

I was raised Mormon. I don't care for Romney. My dad is still Mormon, but very much a liberal Democrat. I fully expect him to vote for whoever is on the Democratic ticket.

        Good lord.

        Taft was hugely fat.

        Adams was bald.

        Lincoln was reportedly manic depressive.

        Roosevelt was in a wheelchair.

        Jackson a practicing alcoholic.

So, now we supposedly have "movie star" requirements for our Presidents, while simultaneously (from the Right, at least) ruling out anything resembling "Hollywood" beliefs?

It may be great tabloid fun to engage in a teenage-girl "evaluation" of how dreamy a candidate might be, but for our "PRESS" to constantly delve into such irrelevant matters as LOOKS is quite simply an aborgation of their responsibility and duty to INFORM the public. This means ISSUES and QUALIFICATIONS, not what a person might LOOK like. Our "news" media is simply not doing their jobs; they have chosen another (lowdown) path, and easier path, a path without substance. A pox on their houses.

We could do a lot worse than Mitt Romney, thats for sure.  Its very creepy that Democrats are hoping for religious bigotry to save the day!

I was hoping for a good Democratic candidate and I am worried about Hillary Clinton bringing down my local Demcratic candidate for Congress.  But I am warming to the idea of divided government, by default, because it looks like the Democratic party will not give us a good candidate.  I would never vote for Hillary Clinton just on the family dynasty thing.  I think its outrageous.

Thats one way to put it.  I blame the Democratic establishment.  At this point,  I don't see a Republican candidate who would be worse for the country than solidifying a tradition of family dynasties in the presidency would be bad for the country.  The Iraq War will be a non-issue between Hillary Clinton and any of the Republicans as well as  the other issues I care about.

Its a hopeful sign to me that 2 of the 3 top Republican candidates (Romney and Giuliani) are candidates I don't have reservations about; they're both OK.  Boy, would I be depressed if they were all George Bush clones but maybe he is sui generis.

        ANDRA:

Your anti-Dynasty fervor would have deprived us of FDR ... Teddy preceded him.

While I understand a desire to NOT return to rule-by-bloodline, where monarchies ruled for centuries on the basis of royal relation, wouldn't it be far better to judge candidates by their individual positions and qualifications, instead of ultimately irrelevant guilt-by-association?

I opposed GW Bush, not because of his bloodline and relation to past (failed) president GHW Bush, but because he was UNQUALIFIED and disingenuous and a rank hypocrite and WRONG on the issues.

Comparing FDR's career with Hillary Clinton's is . . . odd.  The only things Hillary Clinton has done in her whole life that amount to something the public could judge her on as a public servant are taking the Arkansas school system from 49th to 50th and her total failure to produce any health insurance reform and a wrong vote on the most important issue - the Iraq War - that will come before the nation in my lifetime.  As a businessperson, I guess you could look at her cattle futures trading, which goes to her integrity,  and her endeavor to turn the "Whitewater" property into a housing development.  She was pretty involved in the latter and that was a complete flop.  I don't have any worry about the country being deprived of Hillary Clinton!

According to funtrivia, the relationship between FDR and TR was that FDR married Theodore Roosevelt's niece, Eleanor Roosevlet, who was also his own fifth cousin, once removed.   Comparable to Hillary Clinton and Bill Clinton????

Before it looked like Hillary Clinton was being juggernauted by the Democratic establishment, I wanted a Democratic President but I'm getting used to the idea of divided government being good for the country.  It probably is.   It doesn't speak well of the Democratic Party that this is happening so we probably need a check on them, too.

      Beaver Cleaver’s What…?

That’s right Doris! Seems Romney is being cast as the new Ward Cleaver. At least as a pumped-up Ward Cleaver clone. Wanna make book on the brand of gum he chews? Perhaps, you’d care to think of him as the new Mormon version of Jack Kennedy? Or is that the job of Hamerica’s vaunted press & news media…mmm? He is a former governor of Massachusetts, you know. Or is it that both Jonathan Darman &Evan Thomas lust after the titular title of little Chrisy Mathews: “Bambi, The Fawner”…? Then again, you do seem to have demonstrated a form of selective, fawning promiscuity not unknown to heavy metal groupies…n’est pas?

This is getting creepy now.  I agree that Mitt Romney won the genetic lottery.  He certainly does look Presidential.  He would be a perfect candidate to play the President in a film or on television or even be on a soap opera.  Many others have as well.  In fact, we all might think we have won it to a certain extent.  I think these people, who I think are mostly men, are living out their own fantasies through him.  He is everything they are not. The media should spend as much time talking about his conveniently timed and blatant flip-flops.  Shades of the injustice done to Al Gore--in an opposite way--focus on irrelevant things and ignore the important.  The media focused on his personality and other things instead of the issues.

      THANK YOU.

I think we have to give Roger Simon a pass on his alleged swooning over Romney. If you read the complete article you will see that he is being rather facetious, something that has helped to make him one of the most astute and respected political writers of the past twenty-five years dating back to his Mayor Daley baiting days in Chicago.
