On the March 6 edition of MSNBC's Imus in the Morning, executive producer Bernard McGuirk said that Sen. Hillary Rodham Clinton (D-NY) was "trying to sound black in front of a black audience" when she gave a speech on March 4 in Selma, Alabama, to commemorate the 1965 "Bloody Sunday" civil rights march. McGuirk added that Clinton "will have cornrows and gold teeth before this fight with [Sen. Barack] Obama [D-IL] is over." Earlier in the program, in reference to Clinton's speech, McGuirk had said, "Bitch is gonna be wearing cornrows." McGuirk also said that Clinton will be "giving Crips signs during speeches." The Crips are a Los Angeles-based street gang.

Later, host Don Imus brought up McGuirk's prior impersonations of African-American poet Maya Angelou asking, "[W]ho was that woman you used to do, the poet? ... We used to get in all that trouble every time you'd do her." As McGuirk launched into the impersonation, Imus said, "I don't need any more columns. Come on." But Imus did not stop McGuirk, who delivered his impression in verse:

McGUIRK: Whitey plucked you from the jungle for too many years

Took away your pride, your dignity, and your spears

[...]

McGUIRK: With freedom came new woes

Into whitey's world you was rudely cast

So wake up now and go to work?

You can kiss my big black ass

While it is unclear which specific "columns" Imus had in mind, columns have appeared in New York's Newsday and The News & Observer of Raleigh, North Carolina, deriding the program for its treatment of Angelou.

Newsday's Les Payne reprinted a letter from black students at Villanova University to Imus' wife, Deirdre, in an April 23, 1995, column. The letter called McGuirk's impersonation of Angelou "highly offensive." A May 30, 1996, column in The News & Observer described another exchange involving Angelou:

As the show's resident racist, Bernard allows Imus to remain above the fray. When he wants to.

For instance, they recently discussed poet Maya Angelou, who said she no longer watched "Jeopardy" because the TV show seldom had black contestants.

The reason for that, Bernard opined, is because "Jeopardy" doesn't recruit contestants in prisons or have an affirmative action recruiter. Imus' response? A feeble, insincere "Stop that."

Despite these prior protests, McGuirk's MSNBC.com bio touts his Angelou impersonation, describing him as "the program's quick-witted on-air contributor" and "the voice and creator of such recurring characters as the famous Cardinal O'Connor, The Champ, and Maya Angelou."

In 2000, the program's treatment of African-Americans also drew the ire of Chicago Tribune columnist Clarence Page. Appearing on the show, Page asked Imus to pledge to "cease all simian references [to] black athletes" and "references to noncriminal blacks as thugs, pimps, muggers, and Colt 45 drinkers." Imus responded, "I promise to do that." Page went on to ask that Imus put "an end to Amos 'n Andy cuts, comparison of New York City to Mogadishu, and all parodies of black voices," at which point Imus said, "I think Bernard should be doing this." As co-host Brook Gladstone noted on the August 18, 2001, edition of National Public Radio's On the Media, Imus' pledge "was inevitably and immediately broken."

Further, a June 7, 2001, article in New York's Daily News explained that Imus had fired sports announcer Sid Rosenberg because, according to the article, Rosenberg had "called Venus Williams an 'animal' and said it was more likely the [Williams] sisters would be featured in National Geographic than in Playboy, adding that his remarks were not racist, just 'zoological.' " As Media Matters for America has noted, MSNBC apologized in 2004 when Rosenberg said that Palestinians were "stinking animals."

The Daily News article quoted Imus as saying, "Things are said on this program all the time that are inappropriate and in poor taste" and that "it's an attempt to be humorous, not a serious analysis of someone's status." Imus added, "If we make fun of Maya Angelou because she sounds a certain way, that's fine." However, the article also quoted Imus as saying that Rosenberg's comments were "just a moronic thing to say."

As Media Matters has noted, McGuirk has referred to Obama as having "a Jew-hating name." McGuirk also directed the phrase "Besa mi culo," which loosely translates to "kiss my ass" in Spanish, at Gov. Bill Richardson (D-NM), whose mother is Mexican.

From the March 6 edition of MSNBC's Imus in the Morning:

IMUS: They're trolling for votes on the bridge in Selma. But this -- but her affecting this Southern accent. Do you -- I mean, how does no one find that just repulsive?

CHARLES McCORD (co-host): And it was bizarre. It was weird.

McGUIRK: She's really trying to sound black.

IMUS: Pardon me?

McGUIRK: She's trying to sound black.

IMUS: I mean it's just -- I --

McGUIRK: Bitch is gonna be wearing cornrows before --

IMUS: I mean, you just can't make it up, can you?

[...]

McGUIRK: She's just trying to sound black in front of a black audience. As opposed to sounding Southern. She was pandering.

McCORD: You think?

McGUIRK: She'll have cornrows and gold teeth before this fight with Obama is over.

IMUS: Oh, my God, I mean --

McGUIRK: She'll be giving Crips signs during speeches.

IMUS: That's crazy, isn't it?

McCORD: Yes.

IMUS: What do you have, Lou [Rufino, program engineer]? Let me hear what you have.

RUFINO: I think it's the beginning of the first thing they have, but I could play it again.

McGUIRK: "I don't feel no ways tired."

IMUS: It sounded like she was --

ROB BARTLETT (regular contributor): Esther Rolle from Good Times.

IMUS: Or who was that woman you used to do, the poet?

ALL: Maya Angelou.

IMUS: Yeah. We used to get in all that trouble every time you'd do her.

McGUIRK: That's right.

Whitey plucked you from the jungle for too many years

Took away your pride, your dignity, and your spears

IMUS: I don't need any more columns. Come on. But, I mean, that's --

McGUIRK: With freedom came new woes

I hope he does, but I don't think it's going to happen. I am all but certain that Keith Olberman who recently signed a new four year contract with MSNBC has been contractually restrained from attacking the morons from the Imus show or any other MSNBC personality; and this certainly presents a credibility problem for both Olberman and MSNBC.

            Hey Lynn,

You're probably right, too bad though because I'm betting Olbermann would want to. I can't believe how much I've grown to like this guy[I only really started watching him around last years elections] and I admire his tell it like it is style.

This Bernie McGuirk has been around for awhile & appears to have a history of offensive remarks. While he's free to make them, I'm wondering WHY so many politicians, Republican or Democrat, continue to appear on Imus. I can't believe they don't know about this guy.

I don't listen to Imus, but just from what I've read here, IF I were a politician, I'd avoid the show.

Good work BTW bringing this to MMFA attention :-)

It's not hate.  A war criminal has a specific definition.  Both Bush and Cheney started a "war of aggression" amongst other crimes.  If international law was followed, they would be brought up on charges.

George Bush declared a war of aggression in contravention of article II, paragraph 4 of the Charter of the United Nations, which upon ratification by the Senate became United States law.

Bush is a war criminal by US and international law. You may not like the term, but it doesn't change the facts.

While that is true, and I definitly think Bush and Cheney are war criminals. I think the international law argument is stronger. If the Nuremberg precedent were followed they would be hung. The reason is the Constitution says that treaties become the Supreme law of the land EQUAL TO federal law. That the newer law will take precedent. It can be argued that the IWR superceded the treaty. Not clearcut, but it puts it in a grey area. The international case is clearcut. Even Paul Wolfowitz admitted that.

                        You've made an excellent observation.

The average citizen of the United States has no idea what is contained in the treaties he/she is having being signed up to, AND that treaty law trumps U.S. law.

Thank you. Yes if it is NEWER. Actually treaties are on an equal footing with Federal law. Whichever is newer takes precedence, so yes in this way it trumps the law.

Sorry us liberals fight so hard for civility. I know it's a real drag that it's taboo to make racist stereotypical jokes and it must really hurt your feelings when black people make fun of white people. I am personally white and I enjoy making fun of crackers, caspers and whities.

Here's a news flash, those who are among races that have been largely persecuted by caucasions are allowed to lash out a little bit. The former persecutors, us, are not. It is a double standard. Oh well. Personally I found this crackers comments to be your standard white trash fare. Repulsive and sophmoric. Hate shouldn't be tolerated but Eddie Murphy or Chris Rock busting on us whities is usually aimed solely at getting laughs. I don't feel guilty. He thinks white guys making fun of black (AA) guys or slang or mode of speech is funny. He thinks it's okay to use so-called 'reverse' racism to prove a point. That is, at the expense of a Democrat. No. I am pretty comfortable with my self esteem. I simply recognize that white people using stereo typical and deragatory statements towards black people on the public airwaves is not socially acceptable. Black comedians poking fun at us crackers is. Some day that will probably change. until then I'll refrain from making fun of black people and continue to laugh at Chris rock making fun of people like me. By the way it's true, white people have no ryhthm, mostly.

You cry "double standard" as if that's proof of "reverse racism," but that only sticks if you have the historical perspective of someone who was born yesterday. And since we know you weren't born yesterday, and since you've repeatedly made this same argument over and over again, we can assume that you are intentionally rejecting 400 years of history in order to advance a racist talking point.

I was merely trying to make a point that slavery is part of our history and despite it being banned after the Civil War there are still ingering traces of it. There are still blacks alive that have memories of grandparents swinging in the trees. It will probably be many more years before the wound of slavery is healed. Liberals aren't enabling that fact we simply recognize it.

The fact that slavery was brought up in here is ridiculous. Since then, the white man has given every opportunity imaginable to minorities and those who are underprivilaged here. Civil Rights, Affirmative Action, and an overall more enlightened attitude have made America the #1 place to be for people of color. Blacks in America have the highest living standards of blacks anywhere else in the world, and they make the most money here too. Making stereotypical jokes is not bringing us backward, if anything it shows progress because nobody is going to kill each other over it. If corn rows and gold teeth were soooo offensive to black people, maybe they should stop sporting those fashions so they won't be as offended. Think about it, if it was actually offensive to them, why would they walk around on the street like that? When they say they are offended at something like this, they are playing the race card. I know plenty of black people who would laugh at this, just as I normally laugh at white stereo types.

Yep.  Since then, the white man gave the Indians their own plots of land to open casinos, limited children to 10 hour work days, and only 100 years since then, gave blacks the right to vote and drink out of the same water fountains.  It only took a century to gain equal rights, We didn't have to do it so quickly, ya know.  They should be grateful, but dang it, they're wearing out their welcome...

        Braid,

Do you know what percentage of the AA population have gold teeth? What percentage are members of the Crips? This is what I"m talking about. There are a small number of Black people that sport gold teeth and I say more power to them if that's what they want, although it's probably not good for your teeth. It's like a White kid who sports tatoos and/or body piercings.( If I made a joke bout ALL Whites having tatoos and body piercings nobody would laugh, because they know it isn't true.) Why tag the majority of the AA community with the behavior of the few especially the negative behavior.  BTW I occasionally where braids. It's a real cool summer/vacation time style, and when my now adult daughter was a kid I often fixed her hair in braids or corn rows. I don't see anything funny about that.

Well, then according to the way everyone seems to be interpreting racism on here, Hillary must be a racist because she is mocking a stereotype. Not all black people talk with that kind of an accent. Many, many black people speak perfect english with no accent whatsoever. Hillary is exploiting a stereotypical accent, which undermines equality. A racist is running for the presidency.

He may well be.  If so, that would be a terrible shame, both for Olderman and for MSNBC. In that case, I would expect (without holding my breath) that someone, hopefully MMFA, would call him and MSNBC out regarding this as it (in my mind) shows a case of bias.

      Braid,

Your comment about Obama's mother's family owning slaves is beyond irrelevant. My mother's father's family are very fair skinned with light colored eyes, My great-grandmother who was sandy haired and blue eyed and many of her 11 children could have easily passed for White if they had chosen to do so. My assumption is this obvious race mixture occurred during slavery. One day when there is time I would love to do a geneologic study ro trace the origns of both sides of my family. I always jokingly referred to my Mom's people as the "sons of former slaves and former slave owners" That is what they were. By extension that means I have at least one ancestor perhaps more that owned slaves. Many African Americans share this history., Obama isn't alone in that.

I have regretfully come to the conclusion that just about all of you are idiots.  Imus excoriates the Bush Administration every single day regarding the war, soldiers' medical treatment, you name it, and you people totally ignore it.  But let someone stray over your line of civility even once, and you act like the world is coming to an end, while totally ignoring both the narrow context AND the big picture.  It's a wonder you don't spontaneously combust whenever you actually come down to earth long enough to realize that just possibly you or one of your ancestors may have done something even slightly wrong.  Get over yourselves and get a grip on reality.  BTW, Bernard's remarks were aimed squarely at Hillary and her desparate desire to appear to be all things to all people.  If you can't realize that, you probably can't realize that this type of "act" may prevent her from becoming President.

That racist, homophobic McGuirk. . .you talk about jealous, mean-spirited bastards.  The whole lot of them.

That lickspittle Charles and his fawning sychophant ways.  What a joke!  Everybody knows that they're jokes in the industry.  Imus isn't even carried in half the States and if it wasn't for MSNBC, he'd be long gone.  He sits up there in that gay BROKEBACK MOUNTAIN cowboy hat of his and expects anybody to take him seriously?  Chewing on his cud and waxing philosophical over his glory days when he was boozin' and cokin' it up. . .he's nothing but a sad, cranky dry drunk.

And McGuirk, God help us when he finally realizes just how gay he is.  He'll need a black man to dry his tears.  And those awful shirts he wears.  I swear he's one step away from inbred mutant alien.

Are they all so collectively stupid that they don't realize that Hillary Clinton and her husband friggin' grew up in and spent over 20 years in the Deep South, which is inclusive of Alabama.  Let her revert to her Southern drawl if she wants to use that to whatever effect.

We should be focusing on the new story today of the next gay Republican porn star that has surfaced:  Bill O'Reilly and Sean Hannity love the guy.  How about them family values??  What's up with Reverend Ted Haggard, by the way?

Imus is a joke and as long as Imus allows himself to be held captive by the likes of the racist homophobe McGuirk, he will be laughed at himself.

I'm new here, and I have to say I LOVE this site! Once I found out one of my favorite journalists Max Blumenthal writes pieces here (he wrote an incredible piece in the regarding that self-hating minstrel Jesse Lee Peterson not that long ago), I knew I found the place to hang out to discuss politics. As far as I'm concerned, Blumenthal became an honorary brother – along with Tim Wise, Max Kellerman and Stephen Steinberg – after that essay. Aah, how I do miss Max Kellerman debunking all the arguments Tucker Carlson use to raise when his show first aired on MSNBC.

I'm African-American, and while I watch Imus sometimes in the morning –  he can be pretty funny when pointing out the absurdity of many public figures, notably the ones who work at MSNBC/NBC – I HATE Bernie McGuirk for the simple fact he's a flat-out racist who has no remorse for his apathy. Because McGuirk was raised mostly in a predominately-black housing projects when he was a kid in New York, he feels he has the right to spew such hatred without feeling guilty or accountable for his actions. To McGuirk, he knows and understands black folks, thus allowing him to say things that are not racist but just insensitive -- y'know, like your usual Chris Rock joke. And it's not like I have anything against whites making jokes about blacks: TONS of white comedians who appear on BET's Comicview are intelligent enough to joke about blacks without acting indifferent to our rich culture and mocking it for the sake of being politically incorrect. The difference between first-rate satirists and McGuirk is that the former uses racially-insensitive jokes to hold the mirror to our faces and demonstrate how in the 21st century – despite the success of the Civil Right’s Movement – we still carry such sexist, racist, anti-Semitic, homophobic, closed-minded people in this country. There’s a HUGE difference between a Sacha Baron Cohen making anti-Semitic jokes with his character Borat and the inane, racist comments from McGuirk. One is first-rate satire that entertains and educates us about certain sections of society; the other is just racist jokes made by someone the suffers from low-self esteem. Lawrence Blum in his landmark book “I’m Not A Racist But...” wrote about a particular kind of racism that McGuirk appears to suffer from. Blum wrote that, "Social (or sociocultural) racism comprises racist beliefs, attitudes, and stereotypes widely shared within a given population and expressed in cultural and social modes such as religion, popular entertainment, advertisement, and other media." Thus, people such as McGuirk (and many Right Wing conservatives I’ve encountered in the past) will say: “I don’t hate black people, or think I’m superior to them due to biologically inferiority, I just HATE their culture!” Since Hip Hop predominately represents us in the media more than any other iconography, antagonistic folks like McGuirk have convinced themselves that this represents ALL of African-American culture, forgetting (or ignoring?) that Hip Hop is a subculture that’s emanates from black urban youth. Therefore, we’ll get whites like McGuirk mocking black behavior patterns, arts, beliefs, institutions, and all other products of human work and thought, in this pompous attitude as if it's all just a big joke that deservedly invites derision for it being so radically different from some set European standard. But Stephen Steinberg said it best in his book "Turning Back: The Retreat From Racial Justice In American Thought and Policy:" “...cultural differences must be explained in terms of their historical and material sources. It is only when culture is taken at face value and treated as self-explaining that we fall into the trap of imputing cultural superiority to groups on the top and cultural inferiority to groups on the bottom."
