The Times of Shreveport, LA, drops Coulter

As noted by Editor & Publisher, The Times of Shreveport, Louisiana, has dropped right-wing pundit Ann Coulter's column "effective immediately" as a result of her remarks at the Conservative Political Action Conference. Editor & Publisher linked to a statement in which Times executive editor Alan English said that Coulter's "recent 'joke' about John Edwards being considered a 'faggot' " was "the back-breaking straw for a decision we've openly discussed for some time." English's statement also said that Coulter's "repeated use of hyperbole in the call for the death of some journalists and politicians was beyond the pale" and that "her 'shock-jock' writing style is no different from Howard Stern's practical jokes and bathroom humor that aims to draw a school-yard snicker." The statement added that Coulter's columns "rarely" "raise the level of discourse."

According to the Audit Bureau of Circulations, the Times has a Sunday circulation of 69,368.

I heard couple of nights ago,  Hannity interviewed an american soldier and ended said interview with " Semper Fi, my friend ". What a crock of donkey manure. That term is reserved for use by marines who actually served in the military, not some overcombed chickenhawk.

            Wolf,

Did you know the guy he said that to turned out to be an ex-male prostitute, porn star and had recently been honored at the big con festival in DC last week. He even had a photo op with the great Ann Coulter.  How futile is the right's effort to keep gays out of the military?

I just read about that at the Daliy Kos. It's amazing! If that guy went to a liberal event the media would have a field day about how perverted we are.

Countdown with KO , (KO was off as he is touring Spring training) covered that last night, it still amazes me at how hypocritical the right is on Gay issues. You will not hear Hannity or BO even discuss this or the disgusting Coulter.

One request, MMFA. I'm on the west coast, some of these items come up early in the a.m.

Could you post some sort of warning when you're going to put that spine-chilling photo of Coultergeist on the home page?

Only when no money is to be made will the likes of Limbagh ect be put out to pasture. Until then just keep letting their sponsors know of your displeasure and when enough people show that the bottom line will be affected the reaction will be swift and deadly. Not many radio/tv/newspapers can withstand fiscal pressure in this competive world

Sure it will. Because Richard Mellon Schiafe and other rightwing billionare backed conservative groups will buy bulk copies to assure it is then use them to insulate their summer homes and give them away if you join any group that puts you on a conservative mailing list.

Why is the fa**ot comment "the last straw" for The Times? Coulter has a long and bloody history of spewing vicious comments. What's so special about this? Does The Times have a person who counts how many dumb and outrageous things any one person says, and Coulter just used up her "allotment"? How many "fa*" and "fa**ots" does one have at The Times? Perhaps Ann knew the Edwards' attack would put her over the limit but didn't care. Seems to me she's cackling all the way to the crypt.

If you put this in a larger context along with PigBoy's "poke the bear" comment,   and wear your tinfoil conspiracy hat, maybe she's martyring herself on purpose.  Conservatives must know that the issues will not be on their side in 08.  Iraq is in the crapper; the Libby conviction has opened a crack into the vile corruption of the Bush administration, and the stench will be overwhelming within a few months.  How can they energize their base?  Maybe they think that if they portray themselves as victims of Political Correctness run amok, they may have a chance.

        Just a thought.

Or, on the other hand, it could be a sign that the worm is turning.  Maybe some of the people who have chuckled at Ann's "wit" for tha past 10 years don't find her sophomoric humor so cute any more.  Tastes do change, after all.

I'd congratulate you on the whiff of common sense, The Times (of Shreveport), but this only calls to question why you carried this woman's column up to this date.

After all, she did call for the assassination of a USSC Justice (and former President). She did toss "raghead" around like she's currently tossing her newest learned "bad word". She did suggest that all Muslims be forcibly converted to Christianity or killed.

But it took until an anti-gay slur for you to dump her? Am I to believe your readership was all A-OK with the other stuff, but that "F-word" hurled at John Edwards was their final straw?

Don't get me wrong, I'm glad you dumped her. But I'll be saving my heartiest kudos away from the kid who had to first count noses on the team he eventually sought to join.  I'm not terribly impressed.

how any "serious" newspaper carried her is beyond me. she's nothing but a lot of ranting. and the republicans can run but not hide from her, because she is constantly at gop events. she belongs to them.

Level of discourse?  There will be no discourse or progress until Ann Coulter is ignored.  She coldly, calculatedly, deliberately says outrageous things to create controversy and focus attention on herself.  The media thrives on controversy and the Republicans love her for that.  Candidates are forced to address her remarks rather than discuss the issues and problems facing this nation.  Ann Coulter is the trojan horse of the Republican conspiracy.
