Chicago Tribune, The Hill ignored lack of evidence of impropriety in Obama stock deal

In reporting on Sen. Barack Obama's (D-IL) purchase of stock in two companies whose investors included donors to Obama's 2004 Senate campaign, the Chicago Tribune and The Hill failed to note that a New York Times article highlighting the 2005 purchase did not include any evidence of ethical impropriety by Obama.

On March 7, The New York Times reported that Obama's broker purchased the stock in early 2005 as part of a blind trust and quoted an Obama spokesman claiming that the senator "did not know that he had invested in either company until fall 2005, when he learned of it and decided to sell the stocks. He sold them at a net loss of $13,000." The article noted that "[t]here is no evidence that any of his actions ended up benefiting either company during the roughly eight months that he owned the stocks," and that "Senate ethics rules do not prohibit lawmakers from owning stocks -- even in companies that do business with the federal government or could benefit from legislation they advance -- and indeed other members of Congress have investments in government contractors."

On March 8, the Chicago Tribune reported that "[a]s much as $15,000 of Obama's investment was for shares in AVI BioPharma, which was working on a drug to treat avian flu," and that "Obama waged a high-profile effort for federal funding to fight avian flu, though aides pointed out that it was for early-warning systems in Asia and not for drug development." At no point, however, did the article note the lack of evidence suggesting ethical misconduct.

Similarly, The Hill reported on March 8 that Obama, at a press conference the day before, had "responded to the Times's questions about his 2005 investments in companies that some of his political donors also favored," but the paper did not note that there is no evidence any of Obama's actions benefited either company or that Obama lost money in the transactions.

People that want to believe this is unethical or improper in some way, Obama's critics, will run with it.  People that don't want to believe this, Obama's supporters, will not.

If this was late October 2008 it might have an impact, but since it is not, the rest of the country, outside the beltway, will yawn through it.

I guess that's the rub of it isn't it?

What he did, wasn't unethical by any stretch of the imagination, but major news organizations are implying on one hand that it was, and that he's being investigated on it, but then sort of burying the truth deep in the story way after the headline. It's a shame that people even think that he's been unethical, when he hasn't at all. Sure everyone is entitled to his or her opinion, but I'd like to believe that some of the time, those opinions are based in facts, but that's not apparently what is happening with this one, or many others just like it in the past, and I'm sure what we'll be seeing in the future.

gotta love tommy's frame of it, that if you accept the facts it is only your 'belief' it was not unethical. LOL, nice back-handed spin there to try and rearrange the facts to suit his partisan aganda

And given your incoherent framing of what I said, I would have to spin every which way, including backwards, to understand what in heaven's name you even mean??  (don't bother, I won't get that either)

Agree.  And we are far too busy for this nonsense anyway.  Do you realize that we have to crown two more American Idols before the next election?

Seriously Tommy you are busting out the wise cracks like a pro. I think your American Idol anology is good too it's a bonus that it's funny. This is bubble gum news coverage much American Idol is bubble gum TV. I'm more of a Survivor fan, which probably more accurately depicts DC. All the backstabbing and what not!

But seriously, attention all Dem candidates; The GOP has left me with very little choice- I don't have the luxury of voting 3rd party anymore.I don't know who your chosen one will be in '08, but please, all of you, clean up your messes, don't do even anything slightly stanky. You're not Republicans, you're going to be called on it.

Now shape up. I'd like to vote without having to get very drunk immediately afterward.

Well, you can do what republicans do...get drunk before voting.

And, why is it we have no 3rd party candidate? Do you think it's because the nation has become so polarized that a 3rd option isn't allowed by the governing parties?

Yes, partially. The winner take all process marginalizes third parties. instant runoff voting or representative parlimantary voting encourages  more than just two parties and allows for more diversity of opinion. With the win or go home process the major parties have to compramise on their policies to appeal to the largest segment instead of sticking with their ideals and making the arguments. Of course there is a downside with parlimentary governance too as political groups so out of it they deserve marginalzation get way more power than they deserve when a government tries to gather enough of them together to get a majority coalition. But essentially YES, the two major parties HAVING the power and not wanting to cede any of it marginalize any third party.Mass media also changed things. Historically third parties could emerge regionally and grow as their appeal caught on, now with everything being homogenized by the media every political discussion the media has is framed by the two parties to the extent there isnt much room to broaden that discussion beyond them. I say this as someone who belongs to a third party
