UPDATE: Eight newspapers drop Coulter in the wake of CPAC remarks
As of March 12, eight newspapers have dropped right-wing pundit Ann Coulter's column after remarks Coulter made at the Conservative Political Action Conference (CPAC), where she referred to Democratic presidential candidate and former Sen. John Edwards (NC) as a "faggot." On March 8, Media Matters for America published a list of daily newspapers that carried Coulter's column at the time she made her controversial remarks -- as well as the email addresses of the editors of those papers -- and suggested that readers contact the editors to discuss their papers' decisions to carry Coulter's column.
The eighth paper, the Herald & Review of Decatur, Illinois, announced its decision in a March 11 column, in which Herald & Review editor Gary Sawyer cited Coulter's CPAC comments and asserted:
Most of you will think that we're dropping her column in response to that comment. Some will undoubtedly believe that we're caving in to liberals, who have launched what appears to be a national campaign to get newspapers to dump Coulter's column. Others are probably praising us for finally seeing what's wrong with Coulter's column.
Whatever group you find yourself in, you're partially right.
Sawyer further wrote that "questioning someone's sexual orientation in such a vile way goes beyond reasonable comment," adding that "Coulter's column has become a one note symphony." Sawyer also claimed that Coulter "seems to adore the public spotlight a little too much."
As Media Matters has previously noted, seven other newspapers have dropped Coulter's column since her remarks to CPAC, including:
- The Lancaster New Era (Pennsylvania)
- The Oakland Press (Michigan)
- The Mountain Press (Sevierville, Tennessee)
- The Sanford Herald (North Carolina)
- The Daily Chronicle (DeKalb, Illinois)
- The Times (Shreveport, Louisiana)
- American Press (Lake Charles, Louisiana)
A July 2, 2006, New York Post article about allegations of plagiarism in Coulter's last book, Godless: The Church of Liberalism (Crown Forum, July 2006), reported that her column "is syndicated to more than 100 newspapers." The following is an updated version of the list Media Matters published on March 8 that takes into account newspapers that have dropped Coulter in the wake of her CPAC comments:

I can hear Michael Jackson singing now, "Annie are OK? Are you OK, Annie?"
It's good that Crazy Annie is learning that words and action have consequences. She's paying an awfully high price for her schoolgirl crush on Edwards, though. The loss of that paper in Sanford, NC, is going to hurt... Sanford is less than 40 miles from Fayetteville, where there is a big military base.
I hope she thinks that revealing her crush on Edwards is worth it! :-D
The two biggest papers by far on the list are the Jacksonville Florida Times-Union and the Las Vegas Review-Journal. It is great to see her lose half a dozen smaller papers, but these are the critical ones.
Tell them that we expect them to maintain a balance between liberal and conservative commentary but that there is no place for crude name calling in their papers.
Every paper is critical.
All across the country it's in the small towns as well as the major cities where people have lost touch with their liberal values. People have been fed false narratives and blatant lies about the left and wherever Coulter ceases to curry favor it's just that much better for decent people on the left or the right.
I wonder if there are any really small Deliverance-style towns where Coulter is the only columnist. That'd be a place to run out of gas.
If my converted 1985 biodiesel Volvo wouldn't be enough to win the Ned Beatty sexual reorientation therapy, my Darwin fish on the bumper and my daughter's "I Heart Vagina" tattoo might do the trick. ; )
I was pleased to see the Oakland Press drop Coulter. They arn't exactly dinky serving six or seven cities North of Detroit. Detroit Newspaper Readership Daily Readers 184,600 Sunday Readers .211,000
I heard from an organizer that a paper in Roswell, GA newspaper dropped her. Here's the reply I received from the Southern Illinoisian today. They say that Coulter will not be getting the exposure of being a regular columnist in that paper anymore. That is a measure of progress... -------------- Forwarded Message: -------------- From: "Dennis Derossett" Dennis.Derossett@lee.net> Subject: RE: Bring Back Civility & Decency--Replace Ann Coulter Date: Mon, 12 Mar 2007 14:28:52 +0000 Thank you for your email in regards to columnist Ann Coulter. In the coming weeks we will begin rotating conservative columnists in the place where Ann Coulter has been running. She may or may not be in the rotation. This is the same thing we have done in the place where Molly Ivens’ column ran before her untimely illness and death. Our approach is to provide a variety of columnists that represent a wide spectrum of opinions to help further the public debate on issues. We hope you and all other readers find this more interesting and informative. Again, thank you for your email and thank you for reading The Southern Illinoisan. Dennis M. This is all very cool. It's called capitalism. Anyone heard from AirAmerika lately?
I don't recall coultergeist being on air america, other than her quotes being either read or replayed as fodder for ridicule. Besides, air america is a radio network, not a newspaper, so they wouldn't be listed among those "newspapers" which dropped or kept her column anyway. I think you probably confused "Air America Radio" with "USA Today" newspaper. Hope this clears it up for you.
This morning on the way to work, then on the way home. Jones Radio during lunch, then probably a bit of Nova M for Mike Malloy. Got a problem with that?
I'm listening to it as I type. As Mark Twain said "Reports of my death are greatly exaggerated."
Free Ann columns and books. Are they getting desperate or is this a normal marketing tool?
Well, you know what they say... "you get what you pay for." :-D
I sometimes wonder if MMFA's staff really reads the tips email they solicit. Having sent in several items that I thought were gems but assumed the editors disagreed when they were not picked up made me wonder, but with monumental humility admitted that it was remotely possible that someone else in the world might actually disagree with my point of view ... (har!). However, the day the list came out I sent in the hyperlink and the quoted language from the newspaper in Sevier County TN (Dollywood, Gatlinburg (one of America's busiest resorts) explaining why they dropped her and TN is not listed above. I wouldn't care so much if not for the fact that I live in a bastion of right-wing ideologues who lacked the good judgment to vote for their favorite son for President after booting one of America's most distinguished and powerful senators out of office (his dad, Sen. Al Gore Sr.) in '70, so this is important stuff to liberals needing to brag about some little good coming out of this region!

What a dummie ... looked at the chart without reading the whole article, and there it is in the body of the article, Sevier Mountain Press!
Double dummy, their first article listed it. I need to start reading this at home when I might retain the clarity of thought and literacy level of at least a three year old. Sorry to waste the time of anyone making the mistake of reading me.
This just in! As if we couldn't have predicted this, Annie has a new book coming out sometime soon. She makes a comment, gets her face all over, and starts getting free press for her new book before it's even published.
Anyone who didn't see it coming raise your hand.
Ah, the Al Franken "Fair and Balanced Look at the Right" effect.
Air America - I love them and listen almost every day. Out of bankruptcy and doing well. Thanks for asking about them. Please spread the word. They have GREAT talent.
Hear, hear.
Thom Hartmann alone is enough to spank Limbaugh, Hannity, Coulter, Savage, Boortz and O'reilly combined. Add Randi Rhoades, Rachel Maddow and Sam Seder and it really is an unfair fight.
