On the March 16 edition of MSNBC's Countdown, host Keith Olbermann named CNN Headline News host and ABC News contributor Glenn Beck the winner of his nightly "Worst Person in the World" segment for claiming on the March 15 edition of his nationally syndicated radio show, as Media Matters for America documented, that Sen. Hillary Rodham Clinton (D-NY) cannot be elected president because of her voice: "[S]he is like the stereotypical -- excuse the expression, but this is the way to -- she's the stereotypical bitch ... that stereotypical nagging." As Media Matters also noted, on the March 16 edition of his radio show, Beck denied calling Clinton "a bitch," claiming instead that "Hillary Clinton sounds like the biggest nag on the planet ... I never said that Hillary Clinton -- excuse the language -- I never said that Hillary Clinton was a bitch. I said she sounded like one."

Olbermann awarded Fox News host Sean Hannity "the bronze" because, as Media Matters also documented, "He repeated the tale that President Clinton fired a U.S. attorney because the attorney was investigating Whitewater." Olbermann observed: "In fact, that U.S. attorney, Charles Banks, a Republican, investigated Whitewater, decided in October 1992 that there was no there there, resisted pressure from the first President Bush's attorney general to prosecute anyway." Olbermann acknowledged that "this could have gone to the Wall Street Journal editorial board," which made a similar accusation in a March 14 editorial, as Media Matters also documented.

From the March 16 edition of MSNBC's Countdown with Keith Olbermann:

OLBERMANN: The bronze to Sean Hannity, although this could have gone to the Wall Street Journal editorial board or Republican strategist Joe Watkins, who repeated this lie today on the network, or a lot of other people. But Sean likes "Worst Person" honors, so, tag, you're it. He repeated the tale that President Clinton fired a U.S. attorney because the attorney was investigating Whitewater.

In fact, that U.S. attorney, Charles Banks, a Republican, investigated Whitewater, decided in October 1992 that there was no there there, resisted pressure from the first President Bush's attorney general to prosecute anyway.

[...]

But our winner tonight, Glenn Beck of CNN and ABC, explaining that Senator Clinton cannot be elected president because of her voice. Quoting, "[S]he is like the stereotypical -- excuse the expression, but this is the way to -- she's the stereotypical bitch ... that stereotypical nagging -- nah, nah, nah, nah, nah," unquote. Beck says he would say the same thing about [Secretary of State] Condi Rice. Yeah, except he didn't. Glenn Beck, today's "Worst Person in the World."

"Beck says he would say the same thing about Condi Rice."

Actually, on Friday night's radio show, Beck was talking about how pleasant Condi's voice was and how he'd love to hang out with Condi and how he'd vote for Condi in a heartbeat.

Beck's an idiot.  He's just one more professional liar on the GOP payroll.

I like Keith Olbermann. Didn't used to [thought he was a jerk via his ESPN days], but I dropped O'Reilly & began watching Keith last November.

And while I sometimes still get a kick out of these *Awards*... I'm still waiting for Olbermann to AWARD Imus & his racist buddy with a Gold, Silver or Bronze.

Now I realize Imus is a MSNBC fellow employee of Keith's, BUT until he can name Imus or ANY fellow MSNBC employee then these AWARDS aren't worth much.

It might as well be Hannity handing out Bad People AWARDS for everybody but those associated with Fox.

Excellent point.  There are certainly valid candidates on the Imus show, including Imus himself.  I can only guess that the MSNBC bigwigs won't allow it.   That may also explain why Matthews and Russert appear on Imus so often.

In Olbermann's defense (sort of) he did recently name himself as Worst Person in The World for twice failing to mention his sports radio partner, Dan Patrick, when Olbermann was a guest on Letterman and another such show.

        Thank you Jeter

I have been waiting for Olbermann to name Imus and his racist staff for months. How MSNBC can allow a show on its airwaves to spew racist hate like Imus show does, with calling Senator Clinton a "b*tch" calling her "satan", saying things about African Americans. The use of Religious and ethnic bigotry.  But for some reason Olbermann ignores Imus who is 100X worse than Beck. Its disgraceful.

Maybe Olbermann has an "About My Show" link somewhere like MMFA where he acknowledges only exposing certain things while ignoring other equally idiotic things.

Olbermann's "selective worst person" awards aimed primarily at his cable competition, while ignoring others on his own parent company's payroll, renders this whole schtick of his as nothing more than show filler.

Thats because the award is AIMED at those making over the top ad hominem attacks on other people thus the ironic name of the award it isnt really about who is the worst person in the world DUH.

Yea, but O'Reilly, Hannity, Coulter, et als. really are the worst persons in the world... at least in our part of the world. Then again there are also Cheney, Rumsfeld, Delay, Abrahamoff, et als... so maybe you have a point.  ;>)

While this may be a valid criticism of Olbermann, I'm willing to give him a pass, since he's the only talking head on cable TV who tears the Bush administration a new one on a regular basis.

Compared to the abject lies told by the Right Wingers, this sin of omission is of little consequence.

            Nerzog- Amen to that!

Imus in the morning is literally all over the place. he has uttered the most idiotic, racist, and inflammatory comments. Which he recognizes as the above- makes no apologies. Imus and his morning company can make the skin crawl, but they laugh in the face of "fair and balanced", shoving their brand of "morality" down viewers of listeners throats, just the opposite really.

I don't think Imus "belongs' on the MSNBC airwaves in the morning- because he is so insulting and just rude and crude- the powers at MSNBC obviously think otherwise. Until there is continued pressure- or he has his Coulter moment ( and he's come very close) I don't think the status quo will change.

I have no information or "proof" but I'm fairly sure that KO received some kind of "guidance" form the honchos at MSNBC to keep mus off his "Worse" list. Though disappointing- KO certainly has enough fodder like Beck with his own preachy pseudo morality, and O'Reilly who is just plain nuts.

I don't think KO's having BillO on his worse list frequent has anything to do with BillO being the "competition". Bill O just opens his mouth and the most vile things come out- KO doesn't script that!

I never thought about that but it's true.  Olbermann bashes the competition.   Sounds like something O'Reilly or Beck sould do.

      I still respect him though.

Amen and Amen to Kieth being the only one, just about, that does stick it to Bush Co., and that's all right with me. Even if his bosses did tell him to stay away from demonizing others on his network, so what. I'd hate to see him lose his job, which means he loses his outlet for his truthful diaolouge. It's like anything in life: Ya gotta take the good with the bad. I'm behind Kieth all the way and I think that anyone who gives a damn about spreading the truth should be too.

Tread lightly there Tommy boy, just cause we're criticizing him doesn't mean the "worst person in the world segment" is not worth watching or lacks of journalistic integrity. Before you start going on a rampage trying to get him taken off the air, maybe you should take a critical look at some Fox news hosts (you know.. they live in "fair and balanced" land), like say... John Gibson, Bill O Smelly, Sean hand in your pants Hannity, Savage etc... Until you do that, you have no leg to stand on criticizing Keith Olbermann.

          That is all.

*I* don't follow the "worst person"s. I usually check listings before watching, for I care far more about the "Special Comment"s than the balance of the show - or network - or schedule. The writing is eloquent, the passion is real, the points follow my own internal view - yet, somehow, Olbermann manages to remain professional in his naming of subjects ("President Bush, rather than my own, "Bungle", for one example that I could never utter). More than merely being correct on virtually every issue, he reasons well from scandal (even those we had not yet realized) to perpetrator to motive to proposed solution. I have video clips of most of the Comments saved, and always wish for more from Keith. the rest of the "network"s  could all vanish, and I probably would feel relieved of the fear that I might go ballistic from entering a room with their crapola audible.

I love Olbermann......someone who can't compete with Hannity and Beck pretty much makes his living off of dumping on them.  That's an interesting aspect of a losers mentality.  While he can't come close to either of them in ratings, if he ceased to bash them he'd fall even further behind.  It's kind of sad that he needs them so much more than they need him.

You know the old saying: 1,000,000 flies can't be wrong, so that explains how crap Beck, Hannity et al really are. Would you want their audience base? A gormless flock of sheep all of them. Probably the kind that can't spot Mexico on a map. Ratings are nice, but if I were one of these guys I'd WANT intelligent, critical viewers. Not the kind that sit in their trailers and shout, 'Right f***ing on!' when Hannity or some other jerk offer up some BS disguised as thruth.

Unfortunataly, I'm sure Olberman would dissagree with you.  Ratings are everything and sadly, he ain't got 'em.  Well, don't worry, you and the other dozens of olbermann fans who despise all things right should continue to enjoy his "show", at least as long as there are more talented and entertaining people for him to scorn.

          Bartonim, this is a reflex for conservatives- the BS of their heroes in the media is pointed out, MMFA documents the propaganda that's designed for the flag-waving zombies,and these same suckers come here and insult those who ain't buying it.It's pretty entertaining.Goes something like this;

(corporate media whore) says pork is a vegetable.

MMFA cites several sources confirming that pork is, in fact, not a vegetable.

Republo-Zombie posters respond "Yeah but there's a lot of us who believe (corporate media whore), and we all watch his show. You guys are just jealous"

Most of them have had it patiently explained to them that mass popularity doesn't equal legitimacy or quality, through analogies ranging from Hitler to American Idol to McDonald's.

but I got bored of trying to help the hopeless,  so I normally just respond to these with "over ! billion served".Unfortunately,The ones it's directed at are probably not going to get it.

But Olberman is smart, he could come up with another way of earning money. So could I. I could do something better than sitting here, arguing with you, but I think it's necessary. You won't go away if i don't. Beck and OReally won't go away either, if people like Keith don't give them Worst Person awards, and MMFA gathers all the **** they spout.

Imus would find it hysterically funny if Olbermann did that. He wouldn't take it seriously and would have a whole week of laughs on his show about it.  On the other hand, take the notoriously thin-skinned Bill O'Reilly...  Get it?

I like Olbermanm, he seems pretty cool and, what's more, accurate to me. Of course, i almost never watch TV, since the American Media is full of sh*t anyway, for the most part. I think it's called S.C.U.M. now?

And for all those people, who think him not beating up on Imus proves he is bigoted... do you really think they would EVER in a million years let him beat up on anyone on his own network? Think again! On the other hand, if Olbermann uses reasonble logic, making people just a little more attuned to reality, they will come to the inevitable conclusion that Imus is also (one of THE best candidates for Keith's award. ps:WTF is a 'jew-hating name', Imus?)
