Hiatt: Bill Clinton and Obama each having "the time of his life" at Selma march, while Sen. Clinton "appear[ed] grimly determined to walk on"

In his March 26 column, Washington Post editorial page editor Fred Hiatt wrote that in a photograph of a March 4 commemorative civil rights march in Selma, Alabama, Sen. Hillary Rodham Clinton (D-NY) "appear[ed] grimly determined to walk on," while former President Bill Clinton and Sen. Barack Obama (D-IL) were "each grinning and apparently having the time of his life." Hiatt, who conceded that the photo may have been "an unlucky shot," had earlier asked, "Is it coincidence that the two touted as the front-runners at the start [of the presidential race], Hillary Clinton and John McCain, seem to be having the least fun?" From Hiatt's column:

Is it coincidence that the two touted as the front-runners at the start, Hillary Clinton and John McCain, seem to be having the least fun? Maybe it was just an unlucky shot, but a photograph from Selma appeared to capture it in Clinton's case: a band of politicians and civil rights leaders linking arms to replicate the famous march, with Bill Clinton on one side looking over at Barack Obama on the other, each grinning and apparently having the time of his life, and Hillary between them, appearing grimly determined to walk on.

Although Hiatt did not specify which photograph he was discussing, other photographs of the Selma march show Clinton smiling along with President Clinton and Obama.

Wow, talk about stretching to make a...uh...a point? Even disregarding the ridiculous hyperbole about Obama and Bill having the time of their lives, what exactly is Hillary's straight face supposed to signify? Are we seriously supposed to infer some broader truth about her campaign simply because in one photograph she appears to be having less fun than Obama and her husband? This is beyond stupid.

One of the laziest forms of criticisms is psychobabbling a photo of somone - I don't like it when anyone does it - left or right.  Hey Hiatt - get another hobby.

Someone should send him a shoebox full of driver's licenses. That would ensure a column a day for a couple years about how depressed and angry the American public is.

Please! Do not do that! If you do, mmfa will "expose" each and every one as some type of misinformation. They are already loaded up with tons of time-wasting material, they don't need any more.

Nerzog, I guess you didn't see the leg of the march that Hillary did on a unicycle with an air horn and giant foam cowboy hat.

Or, if she had a laura bush (lowercase intentional) style plastic smile frozen on her face the entire time she would be accused of being insincere.  Fair and balanced my A$$.

Just a note--I am often reminded why the WaPo & NYT are no longer on my list to read...add to that no MSM "news shows" for the last 11 years.  It is even getting hard to read the headlines posted on MMFA...Hiatt is an incomptent bore in any event, not worth reading or paying any attention to.

I have often wondered why the "press corps" goes to "presidential breifings" at the WH?  Why aren't they just reading the news releases from the septic tank and then out investigating the truth of the assertions...?

It's far lazier to sit and throw softballs at the war criminals and then repeat their lies as facts than actually have to go and investigate the truth. That requires far too much work and doesn't let one hang out with the rich, famous, and powerful for long. We don't have a press, we have a pressarazzi.

"...Bill Clinton and Sen. Barack Obama (D-IL) were "each grinning and apparently having the time of his life."

Sure... they were both looking for Southern babes in the crowd to take home later. Obama probably wanted a really radical black sister who belongs to a church like his that hates white people... and Bill wanted a break from those high-powered Manhattan women he's been diddling. Right...?  (Might as well say it and beat Rush to the draw.)   ;>)

I believe they say that a picture is worth a thousand words...Mr. Hiatt, you are a few words short of a dialogue...please add some words. Why not post a picture of Mr. Hiatt so that we can examine his intent or what he is thinking? Now that would be interesting.

Using his perceptive logic, I think that Fred Hiatt is just an angry man who fantasizes daily about having a "y" instead of an "i" in his name. Well, Fred after reading your stuff, I now believe that your first name is the problem...dump the "e" and add an "au".

      Something smells...

Could it be Hiatt's "facts"?  Maybe it's because of where he just pulled them from.

I'm not even close to making up my mind.  But even if Senator Clinton really is  grim, or harsh, or shrill or a real bitch, I'd rather have a POTUS with those qualities than an arrogant little prick like Duhhbya.

Man, how did Fred miss the black woman in the bottom photo desperately trying to get her hand out of Clinton’s unwelcome grip? Appalling. In addition, missed the Asian person in that top photo - he must be trying to setup a deal with Obama to open a quickie mart by the bridge. And how can Fred miss in the bottom photo Obama smiling to his left and Hillary smiling to her right - looks like they are smiling at each other - those are pretty big smiles - at each other - hmmm something going on there??? Fred help us out, what’s going on ?!?  Not to mention, I don't know if those shoes are right for Hillary, grave political mistake right there - bad shoes and Fred missed it. And you have to wonder how many of those people are smiling because they are outdoors and could pass a little gas without it being a big deal. Important observations and if Fred continues to miss these journalistic opportunities, I will have to stop reading him. Sorry Fred, the truth hurts.

Why do they hate her so? After Gore gave his testimony Chris Matthews kept showing a snippet of Hillary and saying "look at those cold eyes, they really hate each other." I went back and looked at the exchange and she was smiling through most of it, as was Gore. And she was agreeing with him and praising his work. Her "cold eyes" looked like fatigue to me.

Why didn't he mention the poster being held up three rows behind the Clintons?  Hey, that looks like Osama Bin Laden to me.  That proves the Democrats are Merkin-hatin, turrist-lovin surrender monkeys.  Right?

Hillary brought no pom-poms.  She didn't do any sexy dances or not even one cartwheel.  Hiatt is absolutely correct.

Also, why has MMFA omitted Obama's disco dance moves at Selma?
