On Imus, Matthews again claimed men "are afraid" to criticize Sen. Clinton

On the March 28 edition of MSNBC's Imus in the Morning, MSNBC's Hardball host Chris Matthews asserted, "You only hear criticism of [Sen.] Hillary [Rodham Clinton (D-NY)] from smart, college-educated women. They're the ones that always have a problem with her." Matthews also stated that men "are afraid to talk like that." As Media Matters for America noted after Matthews made a similar claim on the March 26 edition of Hardball, Matthews has disproved this notion himself by making numerous statements about Clinton that could be construed as sexist.

Additionally, Matthews baselessly suggested that Clinton has agreed to tolerate former President Bill Clinton's "lifestyle" as long as he raises money for her campaign. "[I]s she enabling him or what?" Matthews asked. "What's going on? [Billionaire businessman] Ron Burkle, his playmate out there in L.A., Bill's playmate, is the one raising money for her campaign. Is this some deal? Where she puts up with him and his lifestyle so that he raises her money?" Host Don Imus agreed with this characterization, saying, "of course." Matthews went on to refer to the purported terms of the Clintons' relationship as a "sitcom": "We're all supposed to notice this sitcom but not mention it. We're supposed to notice. He always wants us to know he's got AstroTurf in the back of his car. He always wants us to know that stuff, that he's the stud. But we're not supposed to talk about it. He wants us to know it, and clam up, and live with it. That's his attitude towards this."

Matthews' fascination with what he has referred to as Bill Clinton's "lifestyle," "social life," "personal behavior," "current behavior," and "personal life" appears to stem from a May 23, 2006, New York Times article on the Clintons' marriage. For instance, on the February 27 edition of Hardball, Matthews referred to President Clinton as "Holly Golightly." Golightly is the main character in Truman Capote's 1958 novel Breakfast at Tiffany's, as well as the 1961 film of the same name. As Media Matters noted, The New York Times has described Golightly as a "blithely materialistic semiprostitute" and an "Upper East Side call girl."

During his Imus appearance, Matthews also repeated a separate claim he made on the March 26 edition of Hardball that "somewhere out in the Atlantic Ocean, I think there might be a giant, green, ugly, horny monster. A gigantic, gigantic monster of anti-Hillary, and anti-woman Hillary, anti-liberal woman Hillary, some real ferocious beast out there that says no matter what happens between now and Election Day, they're not going to let her win."

From the March 28 edition of MSNBC's Imus in the Morning:

IMUS: Can she be elected president?

MATTHEWS: You know, somewhere out in the Atlantic Ocean, I think there might be a giant, green, ugly, horny monster. A gigantic, gigantic monster of anti-Hillary, and anti-woman Hillary, anti-liberal woman Hillary, some real ferocious beast out there that says no matter what happens between now and Election Day, they're not going to let her win. There's men, some women, are just not going to let this woman, this woman win the presidency. I don't know whether that monster's out there. All men I meet are afraid to talk like that. You only hear criticism of Hillary from smart, college-educated women. They're the ones that always have a problem with her now.

But something tells me this country hasn't changed that dramatically. You know, a friend of mine pointed out the other day that we let African-Americans vote starting in the 1860s, at least under the law. It took us until the 1920s to let women vote. It's easier for men to accept a black guy as president than a woman president, I think, historically.

So why's everybody so happy about Hillary? Have we changed overnight? And that's what I can't get in my head. If we have changed overnight, that's a big development. If we haven't, we haven't talked about it yet. But there's something out there about having a woman president -- it's huge -- and nobody wants to talk about it. Just the idea of a woman president. And nobody's argued it. It's always -- it's all this politically correct, careful discussion. And yet it's there, and nobody's debating it.

IMUS: She still wouldn't be as bad as her husband or the current guy, so. If she does get elected.

MATTHEWS: Well, her husband, this thing is -- is she enabling him or what? What's going on? Ron Burkle, his playmate out there in L.A., Bill's playmate, is the one raising money for her campaign. Is this some deal? Where she puts up with him and his lifestyle so that he raises her money?

IMUS: Of course. Of course. Yeah. Well, of course.

MATTHEWS: I mean, it's so synchronized, the swimming, of his behavior and his world and her need to be president. And the way it works together is a little unsavory. Am I wrong?

IMUS: I hear you. No, you're right. No, you're a hundred percent right.

MATTHEWS: We're all supposed to notice this sitcom but not mention it. We're supposed to notice. He always wants us to know he's got AstroTurf in the back of his car. He always wants us to know that stuff, that he's the stud. But we're not supposed to talk about it. He wants us to know it, and clam up, and live with it. That's his attitude towards this.

I honestly believe that one of Matthews' close personal friends needs to take him aside and ask him if he's taking his insulin like he should and if he says he is, ask him if he doesn't think it might be time to have his doctor re-evaluate his dosage.

I mean, he's blathering lots more than he used to.

        Lots more.

Insulin, you say? Well, that explains it! If Matthews is an insulin-dependent diabetic it's quite possible that he suffers from, well....er...erectile dysfunction. No wonder he has such an obsession with Bill Clinton's zipper.

Whatever the case, the man is a living, walking joke. Does he have any idea how unseemly his crotch fixation is? Someone please tell him!

SAVE DEMOCRACY, VOTE FOR A DEMOCRAT!!

I notice nobody speaking of the First Lady's bailing on the President and sleeping at a hotel in Georgetown, nobody is whispering innuendos about the President & Condi, nor other Republican candidates many infidelities in the many marriages between them! They are so biased as to have to speculate, or fanaticize of Bill’s sex life to avoid the issues! We understand Matthews is in Love with the President. He has said so on air many times over the past 6 years. It’s obvious he suffers from Homo-Erotic lusts for our President, and has this frustration focused on the Presidents perceived enemies! I would submit that this kind of perversion is symptomatic of Republican bluster over Hillary, and their obvious visceral reaction to the woman that would be their superior, their Commander in Chief!!The poor man can’t decide whether he is in the closet, of out!!

And what the hell is Matthew's even saying? I love people who say things like.. 'Well, because NO ONE is talking about something (her being a woman- *GASP*) then it MUST be a big issue on the horizon..' Matthews gets on my nerves with his chattering...

Bill's lifestyle? What is Matthew's talking about? This wink-wink, inuendo crap has got to go. No one calls these jokers on any of it. Are we all supposed to just say, "Oh of course, Bill gets laid... " All nonsense. Matthews is a complete sham.

...and he's getting worse. Some nights he seems to be in the midst of a hyper spitty melt down. These cable "sort of news" shows are so much more about the quirky personalities of the hosts than they are about news anyway. BY the way, I was watching Matthews the other night interviewing the Vilsak’s about their endorsement of Hilary Clinton whom he hates. I’ve seen Chris slobber over and lob the softest of balls to Trent Lott, Tom Delay and many of the tough guy Republicans’ he’s so fond of; well Matthews  lit into Vilsak’s wife with a cement ball the other night. It was ugly. I wouldn’t have a problem with Chris if he played hard ball with everyone, but he doesn’t. Watching him tear after the WIFE of a public official with such ferociousness was odd. Going nuclear on the governor’s wife made Chris come off like a bully and a cad.

"hyper spitty meltdown." That's classic, Lynn! It's gross watching Matthews talk with his mouth 3/4 full of saliva. His guests probably leave the set drenched.

Now you know why they switch cameras so often on his show.

Being a camera operator on Tweety's show is probably like sitting in the front row at a Gallagher concert.

I don't know but I'll bet the camera operators are issued rain suits and umbrellas. I was just watching Matthews for a few minutes and I swear he had so much spittle goin' on he had to pause, gather it all up in his mouth and swallow it! I almost threw up!

I went to high school with Matthews. At the time he was an average trumpet player, tall and skinny and totally nothing. Then he went to college, got vocal, started a new life and became a journalist. The wrong kind. Today, his mouth is so big he'd eat a trumpet. But he bought a place in the HS's Hall of Fame by making a major donation. Sad, really. Today, he just seems like a CC of Rush Limbaugh and acts like a huge bully who won't invite any criticism. Love to see what he believes about  whoever does ultimately run...except he will have changed his mind (again) by that time.

This uber-he man was a "Band Geek?"  Now, in truth as a former HS football player in your area - who Im sure crushed your school...(we beat all the Catholic schools and Chris ia afterall, a professional Irish Catholic...thats how he got his gig at NBC from Jack Walsh btw)  - I have as Ive aged realized that I like your average ex band geek much more than I like your average ex HS football player...it just shocks me to here that Matthews - who on tv and ALL personal experiences Ive ever had with him - plays the seriously "male hs teen jock roll" more than anyone else in the DC media mix.  What a phony!  No wonder he is so sex obsessed...both on tv and in private (also, from personal experience)  If you wanna read about some of the crazed words hes said about this - you gotta read Bob Somerby at the daily howler (www.dailyhowler.com) and just go read his archives about bleach blond boy.

Btw, I wonder what did his old HS classmates when he turned up on tv twenty some years after graduation as a ...BLOND.  It blew me away when someone showed me a pic from the 80s - when his hair was as brown as mine - what a total punk. (Philly rule:  Real men NEVER-EVER-EVER Bleach their hair blond...ever...unless you WANTS a beating! Never...)

I think Chris, who says he will not let his personal views intrude into the next election should shut up and resign from his TV position.  He is very anti- democrat  and his family history leans Republican.

      • Matthews may be a jerk, but Imus is not. He never challenges outrageous statements by his guests. That’s what keeps them going.

Imus can be the soft-spoken hangman of political interviewers. But all he does is provide the trapdoor. They jump in. For quality reportage of what people are really saying off the air, he is among the best. And who else regularly runs Russert, Dodd, Biden, Jeff Greenfield, Begala, Barnacle, Lupica? It may be the Men’s Room, but that’s where the talk is.asnet 3/29

Chris Matthews, or Tweety, is about ready to explode. His Clinton rants are prime material for  serious psychological intervention. The topic could be about the price of coffee in Brazil, but Chris will blame Hillary and her horny Bill. Chris has issues with strong women and should get on Viagra asap.

Most of the Netroots seem to think that Fox News is our big green monster, destroying Democrats and Democrats at the same time...hell, only right wingers watch Fox news , the big danger is the programming on MSNBC.  Why?  Because not only does middle america watch these shows...so do all the journalists and media in DC who cover our politic.  Because the horror of the Imus show (which daily calls our leading candidate SATAN, by God...) is enjoyed by all the DC press corps (Aaaack!!) and Matthews seems to be the head bully and co-captain of NBC's football-political squad (you KNOW these guys wear their NBC news logo-ed windbreakers and varsity jackets when their all hanging out at their summer mansions in Nantucket) it has got to be realized that these are the true enemies of any hope of a fair dialogue taking place in the MSM about the upcoming elections.

Our only chance is to DEMAND that all liberal leaders (columnists, web writers, blog kings) write about this DAILY and demand a change in these already accepted press naratives.  We must push Media Matters and The Daily Howler at them every day, make our side be forced to raise the alarm.  Getting the press itself to reform is IMPOSSIBLE unless we get our own side to just understand the danger we're in Right Now...and understand that if we dont stop this language, this behaviour we will have no chance come election time.  Just like in 2000...remember?

PLEASE READ WWW.DAILYHOWLER.COM ABOUT THIS TODAY!

THE STORY OF CHRIS AND THE BIG HORNY MONSTER: Who should Democrats nominate for the White House? At THE HOWLER, we haven’t decided. But if you still don’t understand the venom aimed at Hillary Clinton by some of our most broken-souled male pundits, you should have heard Chris Matthews expound on yesterday’s Imus. program. Can Clinton be elected president? he was asked. The question set the excitable ranter off on his latest Bill Donohue-style tear. As often happens when he thinks about Clinton, Matthews pictured big, green, horny monsters. Readers, it’s simply gigantic:

MATTHEWS (3/28/07): You know, somewhere out in the Atlantic Ocean, I think there might be a giant, green, ugly, horny monster. A gigantic, gigantic monster of anti-Hillary, and anti-woman Hillary, anti-liberal woman Hillary, some real ferocious beast out there

Simply put, this man is a nut. (Yes, he actually said the word “horny.”) His discussion would only get worse this day—but note what he had already said. He had said that men have these Hillary-hating feelings—and he knows this even though, in his experience, only women are voicing such views. He hasn’t heard other men say these things. But he knows what they’re secretly thinking. A FEARLESS MAN SCANS THE LOBBY: The last time we personally chatted with Chris, he was scanning the lobby looking for prostitutes. To catch the vibe of this loony William Donohue knock-off, see THE DAILY HOWLER, 1/30/07.
