On the April 6 edition of MSNBC News Live, while discussing House Speaker Nancy Pelosi's (D-CA) recent meeting with Syrian President Bashar Al-Assad in Damascus, Republican strategist Brad Blakeman said that Pelosi "abandoned her post up on Capitol Hill" and went to Syria "to give aid and comfort to him [Assad] instead of funding our troops."

Blakeman later called Pelosi "the Neville Chamberlain of our time." Chamberlain was the British prime minister who signed the Munich Agreement ceding the Czech Sudetenland to Nazi Germany.

The U.S. Constitution states that "Treason against the United States shall consist only in levying war against them, or in adhering to their enemies, giving them aid and comfort."

From the 3 p.m. ET hour of the April 6 edition of MSNBC News Live:

MIKA BRZEZINSKI (anchor): And the barbs are flying from both sides, but is anyone really behaving badly, as the vice president suggested?

[...]

BLAKEMAN: Well, you know where she should be? She should be right behind me. She abandoned her post up on Capitol Hill. She did not get a funding bill to the president that the president could sign, which funds our troops. Instead, where does she go?

She goes to the belly of the beast -- to the terrorists themselves in Syria to give aid and comfort to him, instead of funding our troops, which need to carry on the fight in Iraq.

[...]

BRZEZINSKI: All right, let me ask Brad a question. The Syrian leader did seem receptive to the House speaker. Was it just a show, do you think?

BLAKEMAN: Oh, he's playing her like a fiddle. Look at the coverages that he is using for his own benefit -- not only in his country -- but in Iran and in the rest of the Middle East. They played Pelosi like a fiddle, and quite frankly, she's the Neville Chamberlain of our time.

This guy is clueless.  Exactly how did Pelosi appease Al Assad or give him "aid and comfort" to Al Assad?  Can any wingnuts out there tell me?  I don't get it.

I'm not a wingnut or any other psychopath but I think they use these buzzwords to provide some meat for their ever dwindling base to salivate over.  It's kind of pathetic.

I wanna know why these guys get their panties in a bunch when a contest submission to a website such as move-on's that portray's Conservatives as Nazis, and yet every chance they get, these guys like to trot out similar comparisons.

If there's any appeasement going on, it's directed toward the Bush administration.  How many times has this country and this planet just looked away as Bush has trampled on another civil right or worse?  Infuriating.

These comments by Blakeman are totally absurd and hyperbolic beyond belief!

This example of the Republican Trash machine is just the latest in the long examples of trash-talk that they have been applying since the 1968 Nixon presidential campaign.  It almost seem to be second nature to them and their cohorts at 'Fox News' along with the other usual suspects.

When will the American public say enough of your lies and hyperbole?

It looks like the right is just stunned to see a politician with the confidence to go one-on-one with the Worlds Scariest Leaders(this fall. on Fox).

The fact that she's a grandma and has more guts that the Commander-in-Chimp, who has taken the curl-up-and-hide approach to foreign policy, must be a brain-snapper for the average effeminate Republican man.

And Bush is the Napoleon of our time ... just  not as smart.

The "aid and comfort" thing is a thinly veiled accusation of treason ... so it's time for these idiots to put up or shut up.

File treason charges against Speaker Pelosi ... or STFU.

Actually the role of Neville Chamberlain and the Munich accord deals with issues that are more complex than the issue appeasement.  The rest of the British Commonwealth would not have supported British conflict with Germany in 1938.  1929, however, was a different story.  It was Australian, Canandian and New Zealander troops that had substantial roles in the European conflict.  Britain would not have survived without those troops, especially the Canadians.  In another sense it might be argued that the real problems occured because of French dominance of policies focused on Wiemar Germany.  French occupation of the Ruhr in 1923/24 was part of the economic problems, read hyperinflation, that decimated the Wiemar economy.  While this is a complex argument, the core is be carefull about not negotiating.

Syrian President is Hitler de jour

How many "new Hitlers" is that for the Republican Party? Three? Four? I lost count after they took out the last emergent Hitler, Saddam, in about the same time it took the real Hilter to conquer France. Please, everyone stop with the Hitler analogies. Hitler was the ONLY Hitler of our time. There is a one Hitler per era limit.

Good point and honestly some of those republican visitors may have been helpful also. Both, I hope, worked to ease the tension of the situation. There seems to be an urge by our pundits to turn up the heat on anything connected to Iran. Calling those captured and released Brits cowards or worse. I propose that they arm themselves to absurdity and all take a boat ride to Iran.Oh the humanity! Oh the media blood! They seem to want trouble with Iran this would be a possible route to put their lives on the line for what they seem to believe. Course Iran might treat them like the clowns they are.

My best guess, which really isnt any better or worse than anyone elses is that the British troops were never in any real danger. I think they wanted to make a point considering our snatching of THEIR government official, who was also probably snatched to make a point and to make a show of the DIPLOMACY that got them released. Iran is a big problem and one we have made worse instead of better. Diplomacy is needed. Not do what you are told Bush league namecalling. It is a precarious situation which can easily go either way. I am glad to see your reasonable take on the issue. I think the timing might have had something to do with the open diplomatic gesture in Syria. That is actually a point I hadnt considered. Actually a well thought out possibility. Good job.

SAVE DEMOCRACY, VOTE FOR A DEMOCRAT!!

How sad it is to hear a Neo-Con Nut flog Neville Chamberlain yet again, pathetic, and moronic to compare the rise of NAZI Germany to a Suni/Shia sectarian conflict ignited by Neo-Con Nuts to begin with!!!!

Intellectuals indeed they are not!!! They have been horrifically wrong about every policy issue; geo-political policy, or domestic security, governance as a whole!

They have done exactly the things they say they would never do, they have lied at every turn and left Americans to pick-up the tab as the try to blame us for their failures in the same rancid breath!

Like having a tyrant/mad man take a nation down within his own downward spiral!!! An real Angola story for America!

Maybe they could have a Neo-Con version of Hitler's last days in the Bunker!

      Happy Thoughts;

Pelosi abandoned her post  and did not fund our troops. Reference to military service at time of war, nice dishonest low blow Blakey.

Pelosi went to the belly of the beast. Biblical reference in there Blakey? Kind of stupid though when you go on to say she gave aid and comfort to the belly of the beast. Apparently Satan as I interpret the "beast" reference, requires comfort from Pelosi? Does this mean Pelosi could be the mother of Satan? Cripey, Blakey is on a rhetorical religious LSD trip.

So Blakeman is a GOP strategist. Strategist? Thats a hoot.  No wonder the unprecendented incompentency of the modern GOP.

So let's go along with the religious imagery. Pelosi went right into the Belly of the Beast.

Been a while since we've seen one of our elected leaders go to a scary place like that. Easier to send others, and put a sticker on your car proclaiming your support for them.

Speaking of elected leader doing their cowardly "I support the troops" dance, it reminds me of our fearless leader who couldn't even get that right. Remember "Bring it on"?

If there is any justice in the universe, he will pay for egging on and taunting the people who are taking the lives and limbs of our soldiers.

What a metric boatload of horse manure. There is a bill which the Prez can sign, which funds the troops. The Prez is threatening a veto of the bill which funds the troops. Right now they're funded at least through June.

It is also gonna arrive on the President's desk about a month before the previous such emergency funding bill -- one put together by Republicans.

If Bush wants to fund his war properly, he should include it in the budget process.  How much of an "emergency" can it be four years into this mess?  He's the one saying we'd be there indefinitely.  He couldn't have thought we'd be out of Iraq by August.

Probably more appropriate than Hess to the analogy, they would be Edouard Deladier or Benito Mussolini (the other participants in the Munich Conference), but it's a moot point and a ridiculous comparison anyway. Chamberlain gave away the Sudetanland to Hitler. What, exactly, did Pelosi give away? Many on the American right seem to see every situation through the lens of WWII. While there are times when you can make the comparison (e.g.; if I wanted to stretch a historical point, I could point out that Hitler used a phony provocation by Poland as an excuse to launch an invasion and ask: "who does that remind us of?"), the right really needs to widen its historical lens.
