Wash. Post's Cillizza described Bush's 70-percent approval among South Carolina GOP voters as "sky-high"

In a brief April 10 Washington Post article reporting on a Fox News/Opinion Dynamics poll of likely Republican presidential primary voters in South Carolina, staff writer Chris Cillizza stated that apart from the results of the "hypothetical primary matchup" among GOP presidential candidates in that state, an "interesting" aspect of the poll was "the sky-high approval ratings registered by President Bush." Cillizza noted that the poll, which was conducted April 1-3 among "600 likely South Carolina Republican primary voters," found that 70 percent of those voters approved of the job Bush is doing as president, while 23 percent disapproved. However, the article did not explain why the poll's finding was "interesting." Indeed, recent nationwide polling of self-identified Republicans regarding Bush's job performance have yielded similar results, which themselves represent a significant decline in support for Bush among Republicans since his 2004 re-election.

A March 27-28 Fox News/Opinion Dynamics poll found that 70 percent of Republicans polled nationally approved of the job Bush is doing as president and 24 percent disapproved, nearly identical results to those Cillizza cited for South Carolina. A March 7-11 CBS News/New York Times poll reported Bush's approval rating among Republcans at 75 percent. Similarly, a February 9-11 USA Today/Gallup poll found Bush's approval rating to be 76 percent among those identifying themselves as Republican.

Moreover, these numbers signal a significant drop in Bush's approval numbers since his re-election in 2004. According to polling by the Pew Research Center for the People and the Press, Bush's support among Republicans stood at 89 percent in January 2005 but had fallen to 73 percent by March 2006. Additionally, The New York Times' political weblog, The Caucus, recently reported that according to New York Times/CBS News polling data, Bush's approval rating among Republicans has dropped 13 percentage points since late last year, from 78 percent in October 2006 to 65 percent in March 2007.

So even the word "interesting" is now considered conservative misinformation?

"Sky high" seems reasonable to me considering his approval ratings from everyone else sink to historic lows.  Whether they refer to other polls for Republicans or not, 70% is sky high.

Then why do they not refer to his nationwide polls as being "dismal" at 30%, the percentile opposite of 70%?

I made this up a while ago:

Bill Clinton and George Bush walk into a bar. They wouldn't have hit it at all if it hadn't been lowered so much for George.

I hear among the Crawford "ranch" personnel, the polls are a monumental (says Drudge) 98% (sometimes the stable boy drinks too much with the Bush twins and slurs that the boss can be 'non-presidential').

The point of this thread is that it is pure hyperbole to call 70% "sky high" or "interesting" when any partly legitimate analysis would conclude that is it in fact a NEGATIVE TREND.

      Jan 2005: 89%April 2007: 70%

See, that's a 19% drop, which is statistically outside of the error margin, thus is it a negative trend. Simple, honest language. All right, maybe not simple, but honest.

My high school history teacher always warned us about South Carolina. This poll is just one more example of why Lincoln was wrong. He should have left the South secede. Then Bush could be president of the CSA and they would have invaded Iraq, not us. I'm all for dumping the Bible Belt states. They can wallow in their ignorance and racism alone, without our tax dollars propping up their pathetic economies. If they invested more in their communities and infrastructure than their mega-churches and prisons, they might get somewhere.

Bush would not have been president of the CSA. He'd be a common drunk living on the streets of New Haven.
