On the April 12 broadcast of his nationally syndicated radio show, Rush Limbaugh criticized Rev. Al Sharpton and Rev. Jesse Jackson for refusing to apologize to three former members of the Duke University men's lacrosse team who were accused of rape in March 2006 -- all charges were dropped on April 11 -- and asserted that "minorities never do anything for which they have to apologize." Presumably referring to the decision by CBS Radio and MSNBC to stop airing Imus in the Morning following controversial comments by host Don Imus, Limbaugh stated: "Everybody's demanding that everybody apologize in this country for simply breathing. It's getting to the point some people are not allowed to breathe or exhale, or make syllables." Limbaugh went on to complain about the protests Sharpton and Jackson led condemning Imus' remarks, saying: "They're members of the minority. Don't ever forget that this is the case. Minorities, victims, members of groups, are allowed to do anything to address their grievances and to get noticed, because ... they're so oppressed."

Limbaugh later read from a January 24, 2001, WorldNetDaily.com article to suggest that, when Jackson admitted to an extramarital affair in 2001 that resulted in the birth of a daughter, he "escaped from the same moral judgment that [he] mete[s] out against everyone else." Limbaugh quoted from comments by Rev. Jesse Peterson, which were featured in the WorldNetDaily article: "The black community will accept and defend Jackson's sexual escapade as they did with Bill Clinton. And this is the reason black Americans are suffering today -- not due to racism, but rather because of the lack of character." As Media Matters for America has noted, Peterson, the founder and chairman of Brotherhood Organization of a New Destiny, has made a career out of attacking Jackson.

From the April 12 broadcast of Premiere Radio Networks' The Rush Limbaugh Show:

LIMBAUGH: Oh, my golly gosh! Listen to that! As though these women are members of a slave troop -- they are in bondage and they are dragged out before the poles at the "Bada Bing." They're dragged out at all these strip clubs and they are forced to dance nekkid -- and it's the first step toward domestic violence.

Dirty little secret here is that some of these women dancing nekkid -- and I'm not talking about this babe. Ah, might be -- a lot of them are single mothers. They're divorced, and they can earn 100 grand a year at a good club doing this sort of stuff. And they're protected. But this is the hypocrisy: The Reverend Jackson will climb all over everybody who violates his boundaries and his rules -- but he has no boundaries. He has no rules. He never has to apologize. Like I told you, minorities never do anything for which they have to apologize.

[...]

LIMBAUGH: Andrea Peyser today in the New York Post: Will The New York Times apologize? Will the Raleigh News & Observer apologize? Everybody's demanding that everybody apologize in this country for simply breathing. It's getting to the point some people are not allowed to breathe or exhale, or make syllables -- and some people who make syllables are being told they'd better apologize in advance and after they make those syllables.

But the media seems to get a free ride here. The Reverend Jackson wants a free ride. The Reverend Jackson and Reverend Sharpton both want a free ride. They never have to apologize, because they can't be racists, folks. They're members of the minority. Don't ever forget that this is the case.

Minorities, victims, members of groups, are allowed to do anything to address their grievances and to get noticed, because they're just -- they're so oppressed. And so they can't -- they have no power. They cannot act on whatever 'ism they have: racism. They can't be bigots. They can't be sexists. They're -- they don't have the power to be. Only racism, bigotry, sexism, homophobia -- those things are reserved for the majority, because they're the only ones that have the power.

Now, here's the Reverend Jackson talking about how nekkid women being forced to dance in front of men is the first step toward domestic violence, and they know it's wrong and nobody should be doing it. Does anybody remember -- have you forgotten this?

The Reverend Jackson himself has fathered a lovechild. This is from World Net Daily in 2001: "According to the Reverend Jesse Peterson, head of the Los Angeles-based civil rights group BOND, or Brotherhood Organization of a New Destiny -- 'it's not a big surprise that the Reverend Jackson has committed adultery,' and that his actions are unfortunately 'all too typical' of 'black ministers and politicians in the black community.' "

"The black community will accept and defend Jackson's sexual escapade as they did with Bill Clinton. And this is the reason black Americans are suffering today -- not due to racism, but rather because of the lack of character."

This was a blistering statement released by the Reverend Jesse Peterson: "Last week, the national media filled with details" -- again, this is January 2001 -- "Last week, the national media filled with details of the Reverend Jackson's long-term extramarital affair with a top aide working for his Monochrome Coalition, which resulted in the birth of a daughter in 1998" -- the aforementioned lovechild. "The Reverend Jackson, at the time 59, has reportedly been paying the mother, who headed the Monochrome Coalition's D.C. office, 10 grand a month after DNA tests determined he was the father of her child."

Now, I know we're supposed to forgive. I mean, this happens to a lot of people, too. A lot of people engage in infidelity, a lot of people have lovechilds -- lovechildren, and -- but it's wrong. It shouldn't happen. But all these people escaped the same moral judgment that they mete out against everyone else. They seem to be immune from it.

You know what's funny about all this, though? I have to tell you, and I think it's ironic as hell. Why do you think -- this is a simple question -- of all the people in this country, why is it that two of us -- or two of them -- the Reverend Jackson and the Reverend Sharpton -- have become the final arbiters of what's OK and not OK to say on the, quote-unquote, "public airwaves"?

By the way, the Imus situation: MSNBC's not public airwaves. It's cable. None of it's on the air. They're not subject to FCC regulations on this kind of thing. The whole argument here that we've got to clean up and detoxify the airwaves -- well, cable's not the public airwaves. It doesn't apply. That's why all the raunch and rotgut in culture is on cable. You get away with it there. The FCC has no purview.

At any rate, why is it those are the two guys who are set up here as final arbiters? Well, who created them? The left; the liberals; the Democrat Party [sic]. Jackson and Sharpton have seats at the Democrat Party table of power 'cause they deliver votes. They're the ones who have legitimized them, and what's ironic and funny about this is, now they've got to deal with them. Guess who it is that Sharpton and Jackson are trying to shake down? NBC and CBS. And those two organizations -- ABC as well and The New York Times -- they've all created this monster.

They've set them up. And now these guys are turning on them. For now. They'll go elsewhere after they get their love donations or whatever they want. But it's hilarious to see this. The left created its own monster, its own Frankenstein, and Frankenstein's attacking the doctor. The monster's attacking the doctor here. It's just -- it's amazing to see.

Perhaps Rush is right? Minority groups don't have to apologize for false legal accusations, for crossing borders illegally, for anything that they do that is wrong. If 'whitey' causes any harm, s/he gets tried and convicted (publicly or legally). Three border agents are in prison for doing their jobs and there has been no apology from the criminal or the Mexican government. Three college students have been falsely accused for over a year and had the threat of long prison terms and public humiliation on their minds for the entire time. No apology.

I guess you are right... Rush is an idiot.

Although Sharpton has no moral authority for calling for anyone's firing for making racial slurs, including Imus......for Sharpton is a racial vulture, in my opinion........I do believe that some on the right, no surprise, Limbaugh, are using both Sharpton and Jackson as scapegoats and excuses to divert attention away from serious racial discussions we should be having in this country.  Limbaugh and his talk show mentality always sink to the lowest common denominator and politicize everything in their favor, they are sadly predictable.

But honest and respectful discussions should be on the table regarding race and racism in this country, and the negative influences that seep into our culture and are often ignored or swept under the rug for one correctness or another.

You should be fired from whatever job you hold for being the racist you are! Where's Al when you need him. Oh, wait, Al doesn't care about blacks causing the failure of the black culture, he only cares about making money off of people complaining about black failures. Everyone knows where Al's, Jesse's and heru's priorities are at...and they aren't in fixing the problem. They are only interested in blaming white man for the failures they endure. Whether they are caused by themselves or not, they will only blame white man.

It pains me to say it, but I have to agree with Tommy that Sharpton and Jackson are "vultures." It's as if they wait for any gaffe that can be construed as racists and then spend a week or so in the media spotlight trying to advance racial equality.

The problem is, this nonsense doesn't help race relations or quell bigotry. If anything, it diverts the public's attention away from real acts of racism, of which there are plenty in this country. Because of people like Sharpton and Jackson, Americans don't even know what real racism looks like anymore. Americans now believe that racism is when a famous person says something stupid about a minority group. There are countless examples of such gaffes:

        • Joe Biden's comment that Barack Obama is "articulate and bright and clean and a nice-looking guy."
        • Limbaugh's Donovan McNabb rant
        • Imus' "Nappy-headed Ho's"
        • Golfer and idiot Fuzzy Zoeller's "collard greens" comment aimed at Tiger Woods

This doesn't mean that these individuals are not racists themselves (one could certainly make that case for Limbaugh). These statements alone don't make someone a racist, but they serve to shine light on some potential character flaws with regard to how they veiw race.

I would even say that there have been many statements made in the media that are racist, but still pale in comparison to real racism like that kind practiced by white supremacy groups, ethnic gangs, and institutional racism spearheaded by our own government:

        • The Michael Richards "meltdown"
        • Al Campanis' classic racist comments about blacks not having the "necessities to be, let's say, a field manager, or, perhaps, a general manager."
        • "Macaca"

I do believe that the people making these insensitive and often idiotic statements hinder the progress of race relations in this country. But these statements do not cause racism. They are the symptoms of a culture that thinks racism is acceptable. Of course they should be held accountable, but at some point, if they are truly serious about improving the American experience for minorities, Rev.'s Sharpton and jackson need to start focusing the public's attention on the real racism that is going on.

I can certainly see your point about the Fairness Doctrine. You guys on the left side of the aisle realize that you have no chance against conservative talk show programs in the free marketplace (Talker's Magazine helped me out, there). They have too many listeners and are way too popular for the "Air America's" to compete against on a level playing feild.  You have to try to gain an edge to somehow try to pull even, so the Doctrine comes up. Just like everything else, you can't do it through popularity, you must do it through the courts. Good luck with that. Maybe you lefty's just aren't that popular?

How do you figure Radio America has the luxury of a level playing field? Do you know how much money was pored into the conservative radio net before it finally turned a profit? Niether do I, but I would be willing to bet it was over six figures.

Popularity is a must to succeed in the free marketplace. Walmart, Rush, SUV's etc are popular. Air America was not popular.  It went belly up. Under the Fairness Doctrine, it would've still been on the air regardless, which was my point of the level playing feild. The lefty's know that they cannot compete with conservative radio without the Doctrine. Your statement about popularity being overrated was completely expected. The "just because nobody listens to it doesn't mean it's not important" defense. Nice.

Nah, we don't have to. There's always Option #1: Turn the TV off. I don't watch or listen to any of this garbage. I look for the real news online and root out what's really relevant. I just come here to counter the lie of Democrat liberality and lay into the occasional Repub orc.

The sad thing about this site is that it lets the TV morons set the agenda. It only reports on what they do or say, it follows, it does not lead, it does not take the initiative. Without Limbaugh and Savage and all the rest of those sociopaths, this place loses it's reason to exist. It actually helps them, it asks people to pay attention to them. Those orcs thrive on negative attention so it's not the correct strategy.

The only way to end this kind of puerile media is to change the social consciousness and move it away from the shallow end of the gene pool. A rejection of tabloidism, of sensationalism. More issues, less illusion. All revolutions start in the mind.

Thank you for saying that. That's what I've been saying all along. It's good to know that there's still a few traditional liberals out there who support free speech rights. All of the traditional liberals out there need to stand up and fight against Brock's new and dangerous form of neo-fascist liberalism that seeks to end free speech rights.

How many times do we have to EXPLAIN that there is NO free speech issue here. NONE. No one has a RIGHT to a nationally syndicated audience. Where is MY nationally syndicated radio show? The airwaves BELONG TO US. WE get to give our opinion on how OUR RESOURCE IS USED. The ONLY free speech argument here is OURS to complain about how these screechmonkeys use OUR resource.

      Everything he said is true.

The Crimes of Al Sharpton –Part 1ï‚· In the Tawana Brawley case, a 15-year-old black girl was found smeared withfeces, lying in a garbage bag, her clothing torn and burned and with variousslurs and epithets written on her body in charcoal. Brawley claimed that shehad been assaulted and raped by six white men, some of them police officers,in the town of Wappingers Falls, New York. Alton H. Maddox, C. Vernon Masonjoined Sharpton in support of Brawley. A grand jury was convened; after sevenmonths of examining police and medical records, the jury determined thatBrawley lied about being assaulted by the police. Sharpton, Maddox andMason were later successfully sued for statements made in connection withthe case, and ordered to pay $345,000 in damages.ï‚· In 1989 and 1990 Sharpton again beat the odds. First, Sharpton beat a tax evasionrap, which he called a government vendetta. Then, in 1990, he was acquitted oncharges that he pocketed more than half of the $250,000 he raised through theNational Youth Movement.ï‚· The Crown Heights Riot occurred after a car accident involving the motorcadefor the Lubavitcher Rebbe killing a young boy Gavin Cato. A riot was sparkedafter a private Hasidic ambulance came to the scene and, on the orders of a policeofficer, removed the Hasidic driver from the scene. Gavin Cato and his cousinAngela were picked up soon after by a city ambulance. Caribbean-American andAfrican-American residents of the neighborhood then rioted for fourconsecutive days fueled by rumors (in part driven by Sharpton), that theprivate ambulance had refused to treat Cato. Al Sharpton became the de-factorepresentative for the Cato family. During the funeral he referred to "diamondmerchants" considered a code word for Hasidic Jews, for shedding "the bloodof innocent babies" leading marchers shouting "No Justice No Peace". Sharpton didnot start the riots but his rhetoric was seen as inflammatory and unhelpful in easingthe tension between the black and Jewish communities. A visiting rabbinicalstudent from Australia by the name of Yankel Rosenbaum, 29 years old, waskilled during the rioting by a mob shouting "Kill the Jew".ï‚· In 2001, Sharpton served a three-month prison term for an act of civil disobedienceconsisting in illegally trespassing on U.S. property located on a bombing range inVieques, Puerto Rico. Sharpton was imprisoned for protesting the United StatesNavy's ongoing bombing and target practices on the island.ï‚· In November 2005, Sharpton appeared in advertisements for LoanMax, anautomobile title loan company. Sharpton was criticized for appearing in the ads, asLoanMax has been accused of predatory lending charging fees, and for marketingthem to primarily poor, urban and African American audiences. The ads featuringSharpton were run in predominantly African American markets.Sources: Wikipedia/Answers.com

The Crimes of Al Sharpton –Part 2ï‚· The Rev. Al Sharpton and two other men were convicted and jailed for their roles inthe December 1987 ''day of outrage'' protest, which stalled subways in Brooklyn forhours.ï‚· Sharpton appeared in a 1983 FBI videotape discussing the laundering of drugmoney with mobster-turned-informant Michael Franzese, one-time captain forthe Colombo crime family. Sharpton appears on the tape to offer to broker ameeting between Don King and a South American drug lord. No indictmentswere filed.ï‚· In 1995, he led his National Action Network in an ugly boycott againstFreddy's Fashion Mart, a Jewish-owned business that had its rent raised by itsblack landlord. Freddy's in turn raised the rent on one of its subtenants, a blackownedmusic store. The street leader of the boycott, Morris Powell, was the headof Sharpton's "Buy Black" Committee. Repeatedly referring to the Jewishproprietors of Freddy's as "crackers," Powell and his fellow protestersmenacingly told passersby, "Keep [going] right on past Freddy's, he's one ofthe greedy Jew bastards killing our [black] people. Don't give the Jew a dime."Some picketers openly threatened violence against whites and Jews -- allunder the watchful, approving eye of Sharpton. The subsequent picketingbecame increasingly violent in tone until one of the protesters eventually shotfour whites in the store, and then set the building on fire -- killing sevenemployees, most of whom were Hispanics.ï‚· Sharpton embraced Yasser Arafat in 2001, again for political reasons as he hopedto unseat Jesse Jackson as the most influential black leftist in the United States.Sources: NY Times and discoverthenetworks.org

The reason is because their children don't have a 50% drop out rate, and they have a greater percentage of parents who are married than American-born blacks.

I am not sure this running interference is intentional (or if the posters are just morons), but it would be nice if they would at least have the decency to provide links so I could see the reasoning (or more often -- the lack there of) of their points a little more quickly.

Since when do we let a Drug Dealer and an Adulterer act as moral authorities?

Hypocrisy all the way around in this escapade.

Sharpton / Jackson claim to be the heirs of Martin Luther King, but act like PT Barnums sidekicks.

They criticize Imus but make no comments on Rap "artists" who make a living off negative comments on black women specifically. .

Imus was a entertaining but stupid old man with evidently a good heart.   Lot's of charity work.  He was an equal opportunty insulter.  He held back on no one.

Sharpton / Jackson are just evil.  And they call themselves ministers.  Of course even Satan keeps transforming himself into an angel of light, per the bible, so it's no surprise these guys do the same thing.  The only charity they are concerned with is themselves.  Never apologize for any of their errors, always on the lookout for others.

Don't get me wrong - White Racists are no better than these 2.  BUT THEY ARE RACISTS.

The one leader in the black community who has been fair in their critique of this situation has been Obama.  Google it and see what I mean. Maybe there is hope for a someone of integrity to continue the tradition of Frederick Douglas and Martin Luter King.  At least he has my respect. Maybe that's why they aren't supporting him.  He has a chance to make them irrelevant.

Speaking of Douglas - I like this quote:

A gentleman will not insult me, and no man not a gentleman can insult me.

What Imus said was stupid, but we would have never heard about it unless someone was looking for an issue to ride.  I wonder if the women's basketball team would have even heard the comment had Sharpton / Jackson made it an issue.

I have to thank Imus for his comments, not his comments exactly but the hopeful dialogue that I REALLY REALLY hope will result.

I thank Imus because hopefully it will put the spotlight on Rush, Bill, Hannity and Melanie. Hopefully it will lead for some real change. Hopefully it will,  if not stop,  then spotlight the continued hate crap that's goes on daily on our airwaves.

I am so tired of the media bring out Sharpton and Jackson as the "leaders" for the African American race.

WE ARE NOT A TRIBE!! WE DON"T NEED ONE OR TWO SO CALLED MINISTERS TO SPEAK ON OUR BEHALF!! IF YOU TAKE THE TIME TO SPEAK TO INTELLIGENT AFRICAN AMERICAN PEOPLE YOU CAN FIND ALL KIND OF VIEWS, VERY DIFFERENT FROM JACKSON AND SHARPTON!!!

I as an African American woman want Rev. Jackson to go down to Duke University and apologize to the three white students for their injustice. No I don't believe that this will make all ok but we have to start somewhere. I listen to the Rev. who mediated the meeting with Imus and the Rutgers basketball players and he said of both Sharpton and Jackson that you have to forgive in order to be a Christen. If you claim the title of Rev. then the FIRST thing you must do is forgive!!! No one is asking to forget.

For Joe Scarborough & Company who continue to harp on the rappers, as if that makes it ok, remember who makes, sell and profits on the rap music. Rappers are not making millions off of black people buying their music, it's the new thing for white kids. I don't mind taking to task tackey rap music but again, don't blame only black rappers someone has to record print and sell this trash. And someone has to buy it.

G Roger the information on what happenned to the media over the last 30 years or so is availible. Its not a simple or pleasant story. Mr. Brock's "The Republican Noise Machine" is the only comprehensive examination that I've read. Lots of detail and lots of people doing ughly things. 3 billion bucks well spent over 30 years to spread things that make Imus look like a piker.

Ignoring it and turning it off are what a lot of us did. This was a war as far as the conservative faction, by whatever name you might care to call them, was concerned against an enemy that in fact did not exsist as an organised entity. I know I didn't get any notice in the mail saying,"Greetings, this is to let you know that we hereby declare war on the people who are currently giving you your daily news. They are not making you fearful and then hateful enough. We will correct this situation no matter how long it takes we've got plenty of money and the people we help get elected will help us get more."

There's been a lack of access to the audio/vedio media of people who might have an intelligent arguement against this. We didn't know  there was a war on. There is better access, exclusive of TV, and sites like this, various Blogs, which give us a chance to give veiws and argue about them. It would be nice if people would just stop watching/listening, but its like an addictive drug to some. This addiction helped put shrub into the White House twice now. If the Repulican's can find another candidate of the "proper mindset" or if you will the proper insanity to have any possible chance. Racists like Jackson and Sharpton can say anything they want and not be called racists, simply because they're in the minority. Then they can turn around and try to end free speech rights for anybody who makes a halfway controversial comment about blacks. Limbaugh is right as usual.

Rino Hunter, you are one rockin' dude!  So, your concern is double standards?  Cool.  That's my concern too.  Therefore, you and I can join and oppose double standards.  As I already wrote, there is the monstrous double standard of Limbaugh's life and Limbaugh's words, but an even greater double standard is having one standard of civil privilege for straight citizens and another for queer citizens.  Your concern with double standards is a chance to eject Limbaugh from national discourse.  After all, he's a junkie who's lectured about jailing junkies.  He's a serial adulterer who's lectured about decency.

This is also a chance for the left and right to join to right the wrongness of making America a place where all citizens are equal, but some are more equal than others.

I'm so glad you're so concerned with one standard and equality.  Call me.  We'll do lunch and begin our fight for a single standard.

With the eccuse being he went after people who couldnt defend themselves .They showed the world different. And who di nothing wrongThis is true. But IMO it is just as wrong to go after a non specific group (women and or a race of people). Ecusing Limbaugh and even Imus before because they didn't go after a specific target is what created the enviroment that made imus comforatable enough to say what he said without thinking.

Limbaugh is an evil man and his followers know this, but give him a pass.  To be a follower is this man is to want the good ole days back, before we could vote or had to accept the advances of these white men whom thought we loved their advances.  Limbaugh can't keep anyone - his bigotry is sickening.

To Bush, Limbaugh, Cheney and the others - its a new day.  I am not a victim as you think and I will be glad when you fade into the past or future or to your god.

It's funny how ol' Rush Limpnoodle can even find the nerve to pass judgement on someone else. Remember  a few years back when Robert Downey Jr. was having his troubles with his drug addiction Mr. Limpnoodle said all drug users were filth and needed to be locked away. Only to be found doctor shopping for drugs, forcing his maids to get him drugs, and going to other countries to buy drugs. Simply amazing the hipocracy ALL these people have and we(some of us) believe them blindly like rats follwing the pied piper!

Oh, and Mr. Limpnoodle, don't hate on Jesse Jackson cause he can still get it on without the use of a little blue rocket booster you so desperately crave!

Listen, Imus didn't get fired from MSMBC because Sharpton and Jackson demanded it. He got fired from MSNBC because those, nice, clean, moderate black MSNBC employees demanded it. He got fired from CBS because a black CBS board member weighed in on the matter. If Jackson and Sharpton had been the only prominent people calling for his canning, Imus would still be sitting in that studio, sneering and laughing at them.

One more thing- I'm really intrigued by this concept of avoiding being a "victim" by not taking action when someone offends you. How does that work? If someone punches me, and I blow their head off, that makes me a weak victim? Gotta ponder that one:).

And one more thing, lol. It didn't work in the end, but it was a PR masterstroke to have Imus to go on Sharpton's radio show, rather than speak to someone like say, Tavis Smiley. Hell, I didn't even know Sharpton had a radio show, and I'll bet most of you didn't either.

"[M]inorities never do anything for which they have to apologize"

      As opposed to say,"Republicans"?

I think Republicans do much for which they should apologize, they just are somehow largely physically incapable of doing something like apologizing when it is appropriate.  Apologizing makes you look weak.  Republicans must appear confident and strong at all times.

No it doesnt it sums the situation up delusionally. Blaming the victim. There is NO obligation for anyone to ignore abuse from a jerk because someone ELSE thinks there is a larger problem elsewhere.

All these Republican’ts have some goodness in there character. I’m not happy for any of them to be fired unless the benefits to our country outweighs the harmful effects of their lies, hateful rhetoric and ugly comments against women, minorities and others.

O’Really, Limpbrain, Beck, Coulter, Savage, Hannity and others are more hateful than Imas. I hope the same public pressure on media advertisers that ended the Imas abuse will evolve into a marketplace correction. A correction that will get the hateful, abusive, liars off of the public media outlets.

I am very hopeful. For a really good discussion of this historic event please point your browser to the NBC WebSite to view the "Meet The Press" Show that was broadcast on Sunday.

      Thanks, Sam I Am
