Wash. Post headline claimed "Clinton Changes Tone on Iraq"

A May 4 Washington Post article on Sen. Hillary Rodham Clinton's (D-NY) May 3 announcement that she and Sen. Robert Byrd (D-WV) will introduce a bill to "sunset the 2002 authorization of military operations in Iraq," was headlined, "Clinton Changes Tone on Iraq; Senator Favors Ending War Authority" -- despite the article's own reporting that Clinton "has expressed support for a similar de-authorization, although not as a stand-alone bill."

Indeed, Clinton's own Iraq Troop Protection and Reduction Act of 2007, which was introduced in the Senate on February 16, includes a provision that would "require a new authorization for use of United States military forces in Iraq unless both the President and the Government of Iraq meet certain conditions within 90 days, including the phased redeployment of United States forces from Iraq."

From the May 4 Washington Post report headlined "Clinton Changes Tone on Iraq; Senator Favors Ending War Authority":

Clinton's endorsement of the sunset legislation represents a significant escalation in her opposition to the White House on war policy and signals an effort by Democratic presidential candidates -- including four sitting senators -- to assume higher profiles in the war debate. For Clinton, it is also an opportunity to address what has emerged as perhaps her greatest liability in the Democratic contest: her vote to authorize the war. "If the president will not bring himself to accept reality, it is time for Congress to bring reality to him," said Clinton, who has expressed support for a similar de-authorization, although not as a stand-alone bill.

Also on May 4, the Republican National Committee issued a press release that cited the Washington Post headline, claiming, "Pressured From Left, Hillary Clinton 'Changes Tone' And Backs Legislation To De-Authorize Iraq War."

      Changing tones...?

Maybe Hillary's singing a different verse or in a different key but it's still the same song she's singing, "Let's End The War". In case The Washington Post missed it, Bush did veto the funding bill with timelines that Congress passed and he has given little indication he is willing to compromise. This proposed "de-authorization" measure appears to me to be just the next logical step in a natural progression of steps that Congress must employ to get Bush's attention. Bush still doesn't get it... people are sick of this war and they aren't buying into his scare tactics either. If Bush was a real leader he would have long ago enlisted a bi-partisan Congressional team and actually allowed Congress to participate in deciding how to handle the present grave situation in Iraq, and post-occupation Iraq. Bush's leadership has been an abject failure and he's hurting the country by not accepting help and sound advice. I'm sure many on the right will scream about this proposed de-authorization measure, but what do you expect the Democrats to do? They have an obligation to protect the country too and the bozo in the White House has repeatedly demonstrated he has no clue what he's doing.

Awesome rebuttal (or whatever it was intended).

Make a headline that repeats the "claim": "Clinton Changes Tone on Iraq"

...and attribute the source, the Washington Post... and end up with...

Wash. Post headline claimed "Clinton Changes Tone on Iraq"

The leading edge, in putting the liars in their place!

I've always admired that tactic, used by those who dispute liars: Repeat the lie, and...

      Awesome rebuttal!

Definitely, this is Hillary's week to be lied about in the Corporate Media! I hope the Dems can push through to Bungle's veto, MORA, and start the debate about forced divestiture of how much of the excess concentration of Media the Repugnants have embraced since Ray-gun started this process.

Same disclaimer as always - if concentration is sufficiently reduced, the Fairness Doctrine becomes unnecessary: with 20 times as many owners, 20 times as many voices - think 1960 - there is virtual certainty that no single view dominates any form of the media.  Since Fairness is a pain to police anyway, I have no attachment to that Doctrine. However, I do maintain that Rep. Hinchley does not go far enough in reducing concentration into a few Corporate hands, and would rather see much smaller % per market, as well as nationally.

"Redeployment" again! Democrat code for "we'll keep several tens of thousands of troops in Iraq forever, but will con our supporters into thinking we will end the war". Nah, Hillary doesn't back the war crime, she just backs the continuation of the war crime. And she does a little side-step....

      Don't get fooled again.
