Chicago Tribune columnist fueled right-wing bloggers on false accusation against Obama

May 11, 2007 5:30 pm ET

SUMMARY: Columnist Jim Mateja wrote that Sen. Barack Obama (D-IL) "has more homework to do" and "should [hire] a fact-checker" because Obama stated that "Japanese cars [are] now getting an average of 45 miles to the gallon." In fact, a report from the Pew Center on Global Climate Change stated that the 2002 average fleet fuel economy value in Japan was 46.3 miles per gallon.

In his May 10 Chicago Tribune column, Jim Mateja wrote that Sen. Barack Obama (D-IL) "has more homework to do" and "should [hire] a fact-checker" because Obama stated that "Japanese cars [are] now getting an average of 45 miles to the gallon." Mateja asserted that Japan does not "mandate fuel-economy standards" and quoted a Toyota representative in the United States saying, "No carmaker gets 45 m.p.g." However, as Hotline associate editor Marc Ambinder wrote in a May 11 weblog post, "Obama was right." Ambinder cited the Pew Center on Global Climate Change's December 2004 "Comparison of Passenger Vehicle Fuel Economy and GHG Emission Standards Around the World," which stated that "[t]he European Union (EU) and Japan have the most stringent standards" on fuel economy and greenhouse gas emissions. The report also stated that, according to the Japanese Automobile Manufacturers Association, the 2002 average fleet fuel economy value in Japan was 46.3 miles per gallon. More recently, on March 21, Rep. Joe Barton (R-TX) asked former Vice President Al Gore at a House hearing if he supported an "increase [in fuel-economy standards] like they have in Japan, that's over 45 miles per gallon?" Mateja's falsehood about Obama's claim was picked up, uncorrected, in the conservative blogosphere:

  • In a May 10 blog post, National Review Online contributor Jim Geraghty wrote that Obama "Botched the Facts" and that the column was a "good catch."
  • In a May 10 post, Power Line blogger Paul Mirengoff uncritically wrote that "Jim Geraghty reports that Obama botched his facts." Fellow Power Line blogger John Hinderaker added that "Obama is showing a disconcerting tendency to make things up, as well as a lack of common sense" because "it should be obvious that no company's entire fleet of automobiles -- let alone a country's -- averages 45 mpg."
  • In a May 11 post, Jim Addison of Wizbang Politics uncritically cited Mirengoff's post, writing that Obama "misstated fuel economy statistics, according to Paul Mirengoff of Power Line." Addison added that "Obama's youth and inexperience is [sic] beginning to show."
  • A May 11 post on Human Events Online's Rightometer blog linked to the Tribune column under the headline "Obama Must be Tired Again." The post also quoted "The Whistler" of the blog Say Anything, who wrote in a May 11 post about the Tribune column that Obama is "a fool" who is "willing to make up anything he has to" and suggested that Obama has no "grip on reality."
  • In a May 11 post, NewsBusters executive editor Matthew Sheffield, citing Mirengoff and Mateja's column, said that Obama made an "unforced error" and a "significant mistake," adding: "By the standard the liberal press set for President Bush on Iraq WMD, Barack Obama is a 'liar' then."

In a May 10 blog post, Politico senior political writer Ben Smith linked to the Tribune column saying that it "hit[] [Obama] on an emissions error" but at an unspecified time added an update saying "[t]he error appears to be the Trib's, not Obama's." Similarly, as Ambinder's May 11 blog post noted, the Hotline's blog uncritically linked to the Tribune column on May 10, saying, "Toyota fact checks Barack Obama on emissions."

From Obama's May 7 speech:

For years, while foreign competitors were investing in more fuel-efficient technology for their vehicles, American automakers were spending their time investing in bigger, faster cars. And whenever an attempt was made to raise our fuel efficiency standards, the auto companies would lobby furiously against it, spending millions to prevent the very reform that could've saved their industry. Even as they've shed thousands of jobs and billions in profits over the last few years, they've continued to reward failure with lucrative bonuses for CEOs.

The consequences of these choices are now clear. While our fuel standards haven't moved from 27.5 miles per gallon in two decades, both China and Japan have surpassed us, with Japanese cars now getting an average of 45 miles to the gallon. And as the global demand for fuel-efficient and hybrid cars have skyrocketed, it's foreign competitors who are filling the orders. Just the other week, we learned that for the first time since 1931, Toyota has surpassed General Motors as the world's best-selling automaker.

From Mateja's May 10 Chicago Tribune column:

Obama this week flew to Detroit to deliver his message that the U.S. auto industry is the villain for "investing in bigger and faster cars while foreign competitors invested in more fuel-efficient technology."

The domestics certainly haven't flooded showrooms with gas/electric hybrids like the Japanese. But in fairness, the newest Japanese assembly plant in the U.S. produces 14-m.p.g. Toyota Tundra pickups, not Prius hybrids rated at 60 m.p.g.

"While our fuel standards haven't moved from 27.5 miles per gallon in two decades, both China and Japan have surpassed us, with Japanese cars now getting an average of 45 miles to the gallon," Obama said.

"I'm not sure where he got that figure," Toyota spokesman Mike Michels said. "No carmaker gets 45 m.p.g. Ours is closer to 30 m.p.g."

If elected president, perhaps Obama's first appointment should be a fact-checker.

Not just for number crunching but also because neither China nor Japan mandate fuel-economy standards. And the 27.5 m.p.g. standard was set by the government, not the automakers.

Obama did offer Detroit an olive branch, a choice of federal dollars to pay for up to $7 billion of the domestics' annual health-care costs for retirees through 2017 or $3 billion through 2017 to help retool plants to build more fuel-efficient vehicles.

No he doesn't have the experience of a season politician (not that that has helped) but he seems to have and has the belief in humanity and for that I'm willing to listen to him. As far as experience, we can't go to far wrong, look at the last 6 years and inexperience along with plan old stupidity has gotten us. I for one am willing to listen to a lack of  experience but with a healthy does of intelligence.

              Pearlene,

Even though I'm a registered Republican, and a Conservative [a fairly moderate one], I am more than willing to listen to what the Democratic candidates have to say this time around. While I voted along strict party lines in the past [and regret my vote for Bush--I should have just sat both elections out], I'm feeling a lot more Independent these days.

Obama, Clinton & Biden are candidates I'm willing to hear more from and would consider voting for.

We need a new direction in this country. And we need hope. But mostly we need someone that can undo the Bush years of arrogance, mismanagement, and incompetence.

Your presumption about the media 'darling-izing' Obama is kinda humorous.....

Besides several websites (hardly MSM) and a decent sized group of 'liberal' reporters (sprinkled about) name even one known MSM entity that has done this that also has brought out the many lies and distortions of the new breed of conservatives that have destroyed the conservative value system (you know, those that actually report the good and bad of all issues from either side)

So Barack is a strong candidate with little if any negatives. Compare that to any of the Republican candidates and/or several of the Democratic ones?

What are conservatives so afraid of?

This is sort of a sideline to the item.

I have been reading Mateja in the Tribune since the 80s. As I, and I don't  doubt other regular readers, have observed, Mateja has always thrown very subtle digs at foreign cars-particularly those from Japan. Nothing overt, naturally, but nevertheless his just-under-the-surface disdain for them is evident.

(He also has shown contempt for Consumer Reports-whose testing often places Toyota and Honda at or near the top of their ratings).

Mateja also has a habit of referring to people as "tree-huggers" when he discusses fuel-efficient vehicles. Such as (paraphrasing) "the tree-huggers will appreciate this car that gets 30mpg in the city..." etc.

So I am not really surprised that this little tidbit has been uncovered.

Note: this is not to say that Mateja never writes positive reviews of Japanese cars. He does. But-and this is just an observation obviously, and not some kind of a scientific study-over the course of time one notices the undertone of the preference for "American" nameplates.

I hadn't even thought about all this lately, but this item dredged it up. Sorry if it's off-topic.

Right, every senator and representative who voted for an "authorization to use military force", knew Bush, Cheney & Co. would invade without obtaining the support of a true coalition of nations, without enough troops, without adequate equipment, without security for infrastructure, and, basically, without any plan for maintaing a peaceful situtation. They knew, as Bush did, that the war would cost only "50 billion dollars". Not to mention that they knew Bush would staff the Green Zone with inexperienced political cronies. Not to mention that those who voted for the AUMF knew exactly what kinds of "interrogation methods" were being devised.

Never ceases to amazes how geniuses like you just gleefully and unashamedly parade their stupidity around in public.

Things are disaster.  What is the solution is the problem?  People say pull out - maybe that's the best thing to do .. may result in civil war and bin laden  setting up big time shop there.  I don't know what the solution is but I think we all can agree there is no easy solution.

That's bull and you know it. Al Qaeda is about 8% of the fighting force in Iraq. As soon as the "Coalition of the Billing" pulls out, the Sunnis and the Shia will wipe out Al Qaeda, because neither of them wants the terrorists there to screw up their country and their Civil War. The way to kill Al Qaeda is to get out of Iraq.

Who do you think the Sunnies are gonna turn to to protect them from the Shiites ?  Anybody is the answer.  If Bin Laden is there they will turn to him.

"Anybody that smokes in this day and age IS a complete and utter idiot, and lacks the judgment and self discipline to be president. "

Attention, mastermind: A complete and utter idiot who lacks judgment and self discipline is currently president.

            He is a non-smoker.

I suppose you may well be one of the geniuses who voted for the man who's know regarded as one of the worst presidents ever. 'Cuz he doesn't smoke.

And my intuition tells me that you'd be the Obama-Hater you currently are in any case, even if Obama was John Adams, James Madison, and FDR rolled into one (all of whom were smokers).

Get a clue - when did we figure out smoking caused cancer !  Also just found out Obama's wife works for a company selling big time to Wal mart.. Another smart move on hist part.  Man this guy looks worse than even Edwards each day.

It is pitifully obvious you are a hater, pure and simple--with the emphasis on 'simple', since your standard rebuttal always seems to be the 8-year-old-level 'get a clue'. Hate is what gets you off; your kind is best ignored.

How would you know? You dont offer facts and I dont believe you would recognize one if it hit you with a waterbaloon. Here is a clue, invective and baseless assertions are NOT facts. Yours are mostly delusions.

More petty BS to divert us from the real serious threats facing this country. Oil is a war and conflict magnet. Its pull grows every day workers in China and India etc. look at a new car ad. I’m just glad Obama said anything related to easing our foreign oil addiction. It's a start.  We need to wake up in this country and quit deluding ourselves into thinking the good times will never end. They ain’t making dinosaurs anymore. At least not in the last six thousand years.  Can I get an Amen?

It's like Mateja is quibbling about the caliber of bullet headed for our collective brains.  "It's not a 38 it's a 45 caliber dummy".  Now I feel better.  Incredible and weak.  I wonder how many people think this factual difference is a substancial point and miss the big forbidding picture we may face.  I was around in the early 70's and remember lines of cars waiting to fill up.  It wasn't a movie or third world news clip for us.  Don't fool yourself into thinking it can't happen again.

      Hey, potmeetSkettle2000:

Obama WAS a smoker . . . he has since made the effort to quit . . . that, to me, shows judgement and self discipline . . .

The Chimp, on the other hand, is a recovering alcoholic/cocaine abuser . . . anybody who uses alcohol/drugs in this day and age IS a complete and utter idiot, and lacks the judgement and self discipline to be president.

I can't decide if skettle is racist, sexist, or just a plain stupid neocon -- maybe a little off all three.  Nevertheless, repeating the same type of obnoxious, pointless 2 line comments against Democrats and then peppering in that one line about 'all politicians being crooks' to appear balanced is the same kind of tripe you hear in the MSM and on right-wing radio.
