Dobbs falsely claimed Sun-Times report said Obama received "at least $168,000" from indicted businessman
On the June 18 edition of CNN's Lou Dobbs Tonight, host Lou Dobbs falsely claimed that the Chicago Sun-Times reported that Democratic presidential hopeful Sen. Barack Obama (IL) "received at least $168,000 from" indicted businessman Antoin "Tony" Rezko. But the Sun-Times did not report that Obama received $168,000 from Rezko, nor could he have; it reported in a June 18 article that "Obama has collected at least $168,308 from Rezko and his circle" -- an assertion that, the article reported, is itself disputed by the Obama campaign.
According to the Center for Responsible Politics, Rezko donated $11,500 to Obama's 2004 Senate campaign, as well as $1,000 to Obama's unsuccessful 2000 campaign for an Illinois House seat, not the $168,000 Dobbs claimed the Sun-Times reported. Rezko's wife, Rita, donated $1,500 to Obama's 2004 Senate campaign and $1,000 to Obama's 2000 House campaign. As The New York Times explained in an April 3 article: "Mr. Obama was able to accept up to $12,000 from each donor, or six times the limit at that time," because he was running against "a self-financed opponent in the Democratic primary."
The Sun-Times reported that "Obama has collected at least $168,308 from Rezko and his circle. Obama also has taken in an unknown amount of money from people who attended fund-raising events hosted by Rezko since the mid-1990s." The Sun-Times further reported that "the campaign was sticking by its original estimate that Rezko raised no more than $60,000."
From the June 18 edition of CNN's Lou Dobbs Tonight:
DOBBS: New revelations about campaign contributions to Democratic presidential candidate Barack Obama: those contributions from an indicted businessman.
The Chicago Sun-Times, reporting that Senator Obama received at least $168,000 from that businessman. Obama says he, however, accepted only $50,000 to $60,000 of that money. The Illinois Democrat still reeling from criticism over a memorandum attacking Democratic rival Senator Hillary Clinton's ties to India.
From the June 18 Chicago Sun-Times article:
During his 12 years in politics, Sen. Barack Obama has received nearly three times more campaign cash from indicted businessman Tony Rezko and his associates than he has publicly acknowledged, the Chicago Sun-Times has found.
Obama has collected at least $168,308 from Rezko and his circle. Obama also has taken in an unknown amount of money from people who attended fund-raising events hosted by Rezko since the mid-1990s.
But seven months ago, Obama told the Sun-Times his "best estimate" was that Rezko raised "between $50,000 and $60,000" during Obama's political career."
[...]
The donor list includes six people involved in the two federal indictments of Rezko. Obama earlier this month said he is donating to charity contributions totaling $22,000 from three of those people. Last year, he donated $11,500 in contributions from Rezko.

Here it is again. Dobbs is bad, Dobbs falsely did this, blah blah blah.
So he did or did not say these things? I am not sure what the point of your comments are?
Doris,
Neither is he.
She....whatever.
Point is Dobbs is an unfair target of the MMFA machine. We get it , he is hated , I say move on.
No facts again.
Fireside chat snoopy squats and schooches across your post....
Bad doggy.
I'm not to sure Sue's field is details. Angst, irrelivincy, muted emotions, possibly. She spells blah nicely.
Is Lou Dobbs "bad"? I don't know. Did he tell an inaccuracy? Seems so. Did he ever really clear up his false leprosy numbers? Not as far as I know. Did you think before posting? I don't know. Do you ever think? Again, don't know. Am I channeling Donald Rumsfeld? Maybe. Is there a high degree of possibility? Yep.
Have you been watching David Letterman? Very possibly.
LOL sounds more like channeling Don the Rummy
CD, I don't watch Dave. But I can see why he might have a riff or two on old Rummy.
Ah...just recently Letterman had a segment called "Donald Rumsfeld Answering His Own Questions." Funny stuff.
WELL!
This proves it.
MMFA is clearly in the pocket of the Obama campaign.
It could not be more obvious.
Right?
...Right?!
Hey! Where's everybody goin'?
Deez,
Bbbbbutttt I thought MMFA was in HRC's back pocket? Ya know, staunch supporter etc
I'm confuzzled.......
I think it depends on the day.If a Hillary item comes up today, it will be a full time HRC site, to those whose sense of time and space is limited to what's in front of their eyes at that moment.
You're all wrong on this one. I'm convinced that this site's only purpose is to see Christopher Dodd elected president.
No silly, the agenda here is that Democrats are states men and women who fight a conservative corrupt corporate media every minute of their lives......they are faultless, honest, misrepresented, poked fun at, lied about, called names, misquoted and all around victims of this horrible rightwing media machine.
No favorites here.
you finally got it AA/AP/letherjockstrap/rogain7/tommy-boy
congrats!
Haha. This is great, it gets dug up by the sun-times that obama has received a great amount of money from a shady character. Of course obama and MMFA will try to deny this. I'm from chicago and am somewhat close to the politics here. It's cut throat. $160,000 doesnt even make my head turn.
Heres another fun fact about obama/rezko: A little over a year ago, obama bought a home on chicago's south side valued at over $1.5 million. Now, the home has an empty lot next door that used to be a yard/garden for the house iteself, but before obama purchased the house, the property was split. Within one week of obama purchasing the house, rezko purchased the empty lot next door. What has rezko done with this empty lot? Nothing. Despite the legitimate purchase of these two properties, it is obvious that obama paid less for his house (being on a smaller lot now) and rezko purchased the empty lot, doing nothing with it, and gave it to obama for use as a yard. So tack on a few extra hundred thousand between these two, and you get the picture that the sun-times probably isn't wrong.
lol....Yardgate.
Your fact may be a little off but you are basically correct. It was Rezko's wife who bought the divided parcel. She then sold it to Rezko's partner's law firm, (and if memory serves,) pocketing somewhere around $50,000 profit herself.
This thread by MMFA is another in a long line of disingenuous threads where MMFA goes out of its way to mislead by stating opinion as fact and omitting relevant facts.
Dobbs said the Sun-Times report said Obama got the money from the businessman when the S-T said he got it from the businessman and his associates.
Of course Obama will dispute it, saying he only got so much going back to 2002 trying to make it sound like he's refuted the S-T. Did any of the posters above notice the report goes back further, to the mid 90's. Do any of the posters realize that Obama's defense leaves out those critical time frames? MMFA mislead by not clarifying the distinction in time frames from the report and Obama's rebuttal.
I'd love to have seen MMFA's take if Obama happened to be a Republican. Anybody think they'd have left out the time frames?
There you go again.
Trying to disparage the free market.
Why do you hate profit?
(I'd have typed a little smiley face at the end but I don't believe in them.)
No problemo. I realized it was funny without the emoticon.
Glad to see you a person of principle! ___
ah typical con, why use facts when lies are so much easier. FYI moonbat it was the SELLER who split the property and insisted they sell at the same time.
Nice to smear people , take lessons from the Nazis?
so being a 'conservative' is a smear now? well, yes I can agree with that. Now when will you start working on your inability to not lie?
Where is the lie? The seller wanted to sell both parcels, the Obama's and Rezko's as I understand it, agreed with the plan to divide the property in order to lower the price for the Obamas so they could buy the house.
Correct me if I am wrong, but I don't believe anybody claimed otherwise.
