According to an advertisement during the June 24 edition of NBC's Meet the Press, right-wing pundit Ann Coulter will be returning to MSNBC's Hardball with Chris Matthews on June 26 -- her first appearance on the program since July 27, 2006, when she referred to former Vice President Al Gore as a "total fag." Since that appearance, she has also referred to former Sen. John Edwards (D-NC) as a "faggot." The ad on Meet the Press said: "She's ignited controversy across America. But can Ann Coulter stand the heat in the Hardball hot seat, going head-to-head with Chris Matthews?" During Coulter's last appearance on Hardball, however, Matthews repeatedly complimented Coulter -- referring to her as writing "beautifully" and having a "brilliant brain." During the interview, Matthews asked Coulter, "How do you know that Bill Clinton is gay?" -- referring to her statement the night before on CNBC's The Big Idea with Donny Deutsch that Clinton "show[s] some level of latent homosexuality." Coulter responded, "I don't know if he's gay. But Al Gore -- total fag."

She went on to defend her theory about Clinton's sexuality by stating that "everyone has always known, widely promiscuous heterosexual men have, as I say, a whiff of the bathhouse about them." Coulter said she was "just kidding" about Gore, but stated of her theory about Clinton, "It's not only not a joke, it's not even surprising." Coulter explained her assertion that Clinton is gay by stating, "For any feminist with the benefit of something beyond a community-college education, this is standard feminist doctrine that wild promiscuity shows a fear-hostility of women." Matthews responded: "Well, thanks, Ann. You're great."

At the beginning of the interview, Matthews told Coulter: "You write beautifully. You have a brilliant brain." He continued: "I stayed up last night reading your chapter on Willie Horton, which was absolutely stunning in its satire, it reminded me of the young [conservative columnist] George Will." He also described her as "the picture of heaven." Coulter remarked during the interview that when "most Americans" heard that an Israeli airstrike had hit a United Nations observer post in south Lebanon on July 25, killing four U.N. observers, they hoped to hear similar news about "the installation on 42nd Street" -- presumably a reference to the U.N. headquarters in New York City. In response to this suggestion, Matthews said: "Thank you, Ann." In concluding the interview, Matthews said of Coulter, "We'd love to have her back."

Following her July 27, 2006, appearance on Hardball, Coulter has continued in her tradition of making "controver[sial]" remarks, as Media Matters for America has documented:

  • In her August 9, 2006, column, Coulter wrote that, without affirmative action, African-American Rep. Maxine Waters (D-CA) couldn't get a job "that didn't involve wearing a paper hat."
  • In a November 30, 2006, syndicated column about the removal of six imams from an airplane in Minnesota after other passengers saw them praying prior to boarding, Coulter claimed that "profiling Muslims is more like profiling the Klan" than it is like profiling African-Americans, "because of the history of discrimination against blacks in this country." Coulter added: "What did we do to the Arabs? I believe Americans are the victims in that relationship."
  • In a March 2 speech to the Conservative Political Action Conference (CPAC), Coulter said she "can't really talk about" Edwards because "you have to go into rehab if you use the word 'faggot.' " The CPAC audience applauded her comment. As Media Matters further documented, a number of newspapers dropped Coulter following her remarks at CPAC.
  • On the March 6 broadcast of his nationally syndicated radio show, Sean Hannity said to Coulter, "Most of the speech was about humor. You were telling jokes the whole time here," and went on to discuss Grey's Anatomy actor Isaiah Washington, who sought counseling after using the slur. Coulter responded by saying, "[T]hat's, of course, what I was referring to, and I don't think there's anything offensive about any variation of faggy, faggotry, faggot, fag. It's a schoolyard taunt. It means -- it means wussy. It means, you know, Hillary giving a speech in a fake Southern drawl -- that's faggy. A trial lawyer who weeps before juries is faggy. Lifetime-type TV, faggy." Coulter then referred to the word "faggot" as "a totally excellent word."
  • In a May 16 column titled "Jerry Falwell -- Say Hello to Ronald Reagan!" Coulter, who proclaimed, "Let me be the first to say: I ALWAYS agreed with the Rev. Falwell," admitted that she disagreed with Falwell on "one small item": He should have assigned blame for the September 11, 2001, terrorist attacks to "[Sen.] Teddy Kennedy [D-MA] and 'the Reverend' Barry Lynn," in addition to "the pagans, and the abortionists, and the feminists, and the gays and the lesbians -- who are actively trying to make that an alternative lifestyle." Coulter went on to compare Falwell to Jesus Christ ("If you still think it isn't Christ whom liberals hate, remember: They hate Falwell even more than they hate me.") and assert that Falwell did not blame all "the gays" for "ejecting God from public life," but rather "gays and lesbians who are actively trying to make that an alternative lifestyle."

From a commercial that aired during the June 24 edition of NBC's Meet the Press:

ANNOUNCER: She's ignited controversy across America. But can Ann Coulter stand the heat in the Hardball hot seat, going head-to-head with Chris Matthews? Hardball, MSNBC, Tuesday.

From the July 27, 2006, edition of MSNBC's Hardball with Chris Matthews:

MATTHEWS: You are a controversial lady. You write beautifully. You have a brilliant brain. I stayed up last night reading your chapter on Willie Horton, which was absolutely stunning in its satire, it reminded me of the young George Will.

COULTER: Thank you.

[...]

MATTHEWS: OK, Iran. How about Iran? It's a closer danger --

COULTER: It's a much bigger problem when they have nukes.

MATTHEWS: It's a closer danger in the Middle East because you've got Israel, you got Saudi Arabia. Very fat targets.

COULTER: That's when you have someone crazy --

MATTHEWS: What do you do there? What do you do in Iran?

COULTER: -- who's claiming he's building nukes. You want to go in and take them out.

MATTHEWS: What do you do in Iran, if you're president?

COULTER: I don't know what they know, but I would not be averse to military action, and I know people keep saying --

MATTHEWS: You mean a strike against their nuclear facilities?

COULTER: People keep saying, you know, the material itself -- it can be hidden in caves -- we can't find it. Oh, we can take care of Iran so that they couldn't build a transistor radio. Who cares if they have nuclear material.

MATTHEWS: So you'd bomb them into the Stone Age?

COULTER: Maybe.

MATTHEWS: You would? Really, as president?

COULTER: It's either that or have a lunatic sitting on top of nukes. If that's what my choice is, yes.

MATTHEWS: Take 'em down.

[...]

MATTHEWS: I'm back in heaven. I think I'm on college tour again. This is the University of Hardball, here we are. We have Ann Coulter. Look at her, look at her, the picture of heaven. All brain, no heart. Just kidding! OK, let's go now to the first question.

AUDIENCE MEMBER: Hi. If we're fighting Islamofascism in the war on terror, I'm wondering if we can use American Muslims to fight the war on culture in the United States.

[...]

MATTHEWS: Let me ask you about your private life. How do you know that Bill Clinton's gay?

COULTER: He may not be gay, but Al Gore, total fag. No, I'm just kidding. As someone, no --

MATTHEWS: That's based on your private life?

COULTER: No, that's a joke.

MATTHEWS: OK.

COULTER: That's what we call in the writing business, a joke. No, I mean, I state a manifestly obvious fact. Someone pointed out on Free Republic, I think a little disgruntled yesterday, Ann's amazing capacity is to state the obvious and make it news. I mean, everyone has always known, widely promiscuous heterosexual men have, as I say, a whiff of the bathhouse about them.

MATTHEWS: But, you know, you were on -- I was watching you on Deutsch last night. I watched it because it was all over the blog sites, you can't miss it.

COULTER: Yes!

MATTHEWS: You were immortal in that interview by the way. And you said it because you were sort of pushed to say it. I just wonder if you believe it.

COULTER This is standard --

MATTHEWS: It's a joke. It's a joke.

COULTER I -- I --

MATTHEWS: It's not a joke.

COULTER It's not only not a joke, it's not even surprising. If feminists were not so in love with Bill Clinton, this is like standard --

MATTHEWS: OK.

COULTER For any feminist with the benefit of something beyond a community-college education, this is standard --

MATTHEWS: OK.

COULTER -- feminist doctrine that wild promiscuity shows a fear-hostility of women.

MATTHEWS: Well, thanks, Ann. You're great.

COULTER: Thank you.

[...]

AUDIENCE MEMBER: Ann, I want to get your thoughts on [U.N. Secretary General] Kofi Annan this week basically coming out and demanding that Israel abide by a cease-fire funded by the U.N. But meanwhile, Kofi Annan, after three years of Muslims beating down -- black Muslims in the Darfur area, all Kofi Annan has done is stood there and claimed that there'll be meeting after meeting -- they take out the word "ethnic cleansing," and then we're being lectured to from liberals about hatred, when I remember in 1994, when we had a liberal Congress and a liberal president, they did nothing in Rwanda.

COULTER: Right. Well, Kofi Annan and the U.N. peacekeepers have done a terrific job keeping the peace. And as you know, Israel mistakenly bombed some of them a few days ago. I think most Americans are looking at that, hoping they can hear about the installation on 42nd Street.

MATTHEWS: Thank you, Ann.

COULTER: Thank you.

MATTHEWS: Thanks for coming on. And a smart lady. Her book's called Godless. Sometimes being smart isn't enough for a civil discourse. We'd love to have her back.

This lowly hater was also on GMA this morning laughing with Chris Cuomo. It made me sick that the former NY Governors son was acting like she was the funny girl down the street. She did call Bush something like a moron so maybe Annie is changing? Doubtful but she is no on the anti Bush bandwagon also. Still no excuse for her homophobic remarks or how she keeps bringing up that Rudy can not be President because he dressed in Drag on SNL. Never mind I think Rudy can not be President because he is not qualified but Annie feels that being nice to Gays means you are not capable of being President.

Coulter isn't really the issue here. Her 'credentials' are well established. The point MM is making is that Mathews is a hack and often a tool of the far-right. His network is another one that the righties label as 'liberal biased' and Mathews tries to portray himself as even-handed. This portrayal is important because he chooses to give air-time to the likes of Coulter, even slathering praise on her. Why would a 'liberal biased' network give air time to not just a conservative but essentially a fascist provocateur? Why would an even-handed pundit consistently try to help legitimize a hate-monger who happens to rally votes for GOP candidates?

Thin? this poor could look thru a keyhole with both eyes. Perhaps she is a vegitarian in which case she will dramatically shorten her life as a result of the lack of the 8 essential amino acids necessary to rebuild cells. I think her mouth is going to be her demise. Hate speach and character assasination has a tendancy to catch up to those that practice them. I don't believe she has an umbrella. She can dodge rain drops.

Well, I tried to repeat the f-word in this post, but the forum dinged me. Apparently not everyone thinks Ann Coulter meant "bundle of sticks" when she called Al that.

But seriously folks, it's just plain bad PR to have her on your show, even if it's somebody like Hannity and his audience.

Apparently the love fest with Annie continues.  I almost spit out my coffee this morning when I heard Chris mention her and and there she was laughing off her "f" comment as a nothing joke and stating Bill Maher seriously wanted the VP dead.  Why engage her at all?  She is just bad.

I still believe there is strange stuff in the water.  I mean BOR keeps insisting I drink  K-A so it must be true.

Its truly sad when the minds starts to justify mudslinging.  People who post here are just as bad as some right wing posts.  You get angry and emmotional and want to sling it right back huh? Kinda like Kindergarten all over again... have we not learned anything by now?  Much of the thinking done on this and many other posts really isn't thinking at all.  Its regurgitating garbage that needs to be filtered out by the mind.  Any malicious comments or political hackery just confuses the truth behind important issues with other wise perceived rhetorical opinion.  Focusing on truth with research and diligence should be the way of the transformational thinker, not debasing an otherwise good argument with heated rhetorical opinion and political hackery...This idea transcends our conditioned Rep vs Dem thinking and should start by realizing we are all pawns in a game that corp and govt elites have created to divide us and keep us boxed in.  A country divided will not continue to stand.  We need to turn away from the slanted issues and talking points that politicians and news anchors feed us (by the way the media is controlled by so few outlets that this garbage is coming from only a few people and is fed to us by the empty suits and skirts that give us our news) and start focusing on facts with the bottom line being whats best not for certain individuals or interest groups but for our society and people as a whole.  We need to start thinking for ourselves and not fall into the trap of eating up the garbage the media, politicians, and party hacks spews back and forth.  News via Radio or TV shouldn't even be an issue because the last time I checked they are both more entertainment than anything else and are framed in ways to keep us people locked into opposing factions to fight each other while the few elites that control mostly everything are made even more powerful.  If you don't believe me, put away your manufactured political agenda and look into this yourself!  Democracy is dying and we are too busy fighting each other and focusing on garbage.  We are all better than that? Right?

However, to some extent I see you veering off into the Unity'08 weeds with this idea that partisanship is something negative or artificial. We have two parties for a reason. The original idea of democracy - that the nation work out its issues through an extended, metaphoric conversation - is still the best means we have of slowing the slide into tyranny. I see nothing wrong with partisanship qua partisanship, but the political sideshow often (OK, usually) obscures real issues. That's just life.

I mean, I'd be more than interested to see any suggestions of how to elevate the national discourse. However, to suggest that anything good can come from one side unilaterally disarming is to ignore the lessons of modern political history in this country.

See I am not saying flat out you are wrong. However I have to ask how did ignoring Limbaughs partisan hatefilled attacks work out for us? How did answering him by showing he lies a lot and just makes things up like FAIR did, and got completely ignored work out? Hey if that is what YOU want to do more power to you. I just watched liberals try that for a decade and saw us get characterized as weak for doing so. At this point if they want to take the argument into the mud I will follow them there. If you see it differently thats fine but I dont really need your pious attempts at scolding me. I know very well what I am doing and dont really care if you agree or not.

dear god, maybe Tweety will let Annie peg him while he simultaneously services Mitt and Rudy.  Of course (m)Ann won't tag Tweety with the same epithet as Edwards, since all of his simpering man-crushes are for the same candidates that she's likely to support

        "writes beautifully?" WTF?!?!?

I had heard several AC defenders speak about her great writing, explaining that her wit and intelligence don't always come through in person.

Since I've known people who were good writers and not such great speakers (and vice-versa) I decided to give her a chance when I was recently bombarded ,by an old friend, with emails from  Human Events, where Annie is a featured contributor.

Yikes! If it's possible, her writing is even less thought out and more incoherent than her talking.

Actually, to give Matthews a small bit of credit, he was the one who semi-famously dressed Coulter down on one of her fact-free tirades about leftists in the movie biz by saying: "Facts mean nothing to you, Ann."

I remember first reading about this exchange in James Wolcott's enjoyable "Attack Poodles and other Media Mutants," a trifle dated but still useful study of many of the right-wing pundits we see featured on MMFA.

It just goes to show how increasingly ineffective GLAAD has become.  Coulter has repeatedly used the "f" slur. Can you imagine if any pundit had recently used a racial or religious slur not just once, but several times?  If the networks continued to bring that pundit onto their talkshows,  it's very likely religious and ethnic advocacy groups would cause such an uproar they'd practically shut down those networks.

The gay advocacy groups should be storming the castle of any network who continues to give Coulter a public forum until the administration (and the advertisers) are so sick of hearing about it they decide she's not worth the constant bad publicity.  But I just dropped by the website for GLAAD-- essentially the main media watchdog group specifically for gay and lesbian issues in the media-- and is there anything there?  Nope.  GLAAD's probably too busy planning their eight-hundreth award ceremony or party this year to hand some little-watched nighttime soap opera on one of the lesser networks hype, praise, and an award for having a minor gay character who gets about one line of dialogue every six weeks.  Thank god for Media Matters, but where is everyone else on this?

Jackson made his Hymietown comment almost a quarter of a century ago and apologized for it very several times, including quite publicly during the 1984 Democratic Convention. Yet as often as not, when his name comes up in the press, the Hymietown comment is attached (frequently in right-wing venues it's accompanied with the false assertion that he never apologized or that he has somehow gotten a "free pass").

What do you know!  As of right now, there hasn't been a single comment on this thread about what a big "librul" Tweety is.  As I read this, I have been trying to think of a single leftist extremist with any media access who could be fairly compared to Coulter.

I'm sure that our favorite trolls will be happy to provide us with their nominees, but in order to claim this prize, the nominee would have to be as totally factually challenged as a Savage, Coulter, O'lielly or Limbaugh and as willing to outright lie and engage in ad hominum attacks.

The closest I could come is Michael Moore - and he doesn't come close to meeting the awful standard I have set.  He is a propagandist, but he specializes in advocacy and truth - not deception and demagogy.

I want to encourage anybody that is remotely inclined to write an email to Hardball.  Emailing seems quaint and a little silly, and I suspect those emails just get blown away, but Ann Coulter is a horrible influence on the state of American politics and the mainstream media cannot be allowed to pretend she speaks for anybody but a very small group of nutjobs.  I don't mean this  just as a slam of Coulter (though I have no reservations about doing so) but more as a gesture against her brand of hate speech disguised as legitimate political discussion.  She's going to get rich selling awful books, and there's no accounting for the taste of some people, but there's no reason why she should be tolerated or taken seriously.  She's poisonous to thoughtful, engaged political discourse and I'm absolutely sick of the squabbling and pettiness that follows her everywhere she goes.

Specious media lout for the don't-think distortion...Rush Limbaugh's "feminazi" finally realized, Coulter displays a child's conception of issues, not any 'brilliant brain'; then she slides into her preferred arena for sexual typecasting and domination where she can flee from issues she's clearly too poorly versed to address intelligently after she has put up nothing more than an average schmuck's two-bits worth of hot air. But she's allowed to fake with that because of her glangly, blonde sensual interest value before the media's camera. She's just another Plame Game. To this kind of menially vulgar mentality Ann Coulter displays, bereft of the concept of standard international laws, human rights, or the unspoken tracking of technological drifts she wouldn't have a clue about beyond the 'transistor-age' (mired in dated expression for the new and improved that hasn't been made aware of the microchip or exotic wmd or how industrial operations like nuclear plants are conducted, funded and secured through the IAEC, jointly), there are few important points to locate in her mediocre digression a heavily overfunded exposure forces on fringe media apertures. Basically, with her 15 minutes up, and her star already fallen...mainly because of what is called 'a big fat mouth'...some backing promotion has tried to stage a resurgence of interest and self congratulation reading (through the lips of Chris Matthews) for her. Stunt media, over-complimenting a pig is about all the public is likely to register, a reinforcing adverse conditioner to not buy their first Coulter book. Coulter regresses to childish power plays positioned on the groin area, gay labeling like a vicious little school girl to leverage for masculenity or it's preeminence--not that she really needs any enhancement in that department, being a looming, big boned pronounced expression of she-he masculenity it takes a special breed to find femininely attractive anymore. But that is her only selling point and exploitation value, on which she has been counted for several fouls, thus the just desserts to her are obligatory in return. Rank arrogance's low brow bombasts..or hypothetical bomb-blasts..on any country she deems fit for her brat hate speech, that's one mechanical flaw. A propensity to compensate for her extremely limited capacity for oral/interview discourse, reflecting on how poorly educated and intelligent the ugly truth about her reveals, by going below the belt for a 'whiff' or two, 'bathhouse' or other location she might frequent by comparison for harping on the bias, is inconsequential...is the other mechanical flaw to her alleged powers of argument, among few that can even be sifted from whatever stunt-media flooding that happens to still keep carrying around her editorial 'dead weight', as in 'braindead'.
