On the June 26 edition of MSNBC's Countdown, host Keith Olbermann named right-wing pundit Ann Coulter the "winner" of his nightly "Worst Person in the World" segment for stating on the June 25 edition of Fox News' Hannity & Colmes: "I do think anyone named B. Hussein Obama should avoid using 'hijack' and 'religion' in the same sentence." As Media Matters for America noted, Coulter was apparently referring to Sen. Barack Obama's (D-IL) remark in a June 23 speech that "somehow, somewhere along the way, faith stopped being used to bring us together and started being used to drive us apart. It got hijacked." After quoting Coulter, Olbermann noted that she had appeared on MSNBC's Hardball earlier that evening and added: "We put her on a seven-second delay, which is just a drop in the bucket, actually, because politically she is already on this seven-century delay."

Additionally, Olbermann gave Pat Robertson the "Silver" in his "Worst Person" segment for his remarks regarding Venezuelan President Hugo Chavez on the June 25 edition of the Christian Broadcasting Network's 700 Club. As Media Matters noted, Robertson said, "[N]ow we've begun to see the kind of person he is, and more and more people are saying to me, 'I think you were right' " -- an apparent reference to comments he made in 2005 calling for Chavez's assassination. On August 22, 2005, Robertson stated, "You know, I don't know about this doctrine of assassination, but if [Chavez] thinks we're trying to assassinate him, I think that we really ought to go ahead and do it. It's a whole lot cheaper than starting a war." Robertson subsequently issued a press release in which he stated, "Is it right to call for assassination? No, and I apologize for that statement." Robertson reiterated his call for Chavez's assassination on the February 2, 2006, edition of Fox News' Hannity & Colmes, as Media Matters has also documented. During his June 26 show, Olbermann said: "Remember when [Robertson] said it might not be a bad idea to assassinate Venezuela's Hugo Chavez? Then he apologized and said it wasn't right to call for an assassination of a political figure? Well yeah, that lasted."

As Media Matters has documented (here, here, here, here, here, here, and here), Coulter is a frequent finalist on Olbermann's "Worst Person" segment.

From the June 26 edition of MSNBC's Countdown with Keith Olbermann:

OLBERMANN: Our silver tonight, Pat Robertson. Remember when he said it might not be a bad idea to assassinate Venezuela's Hugo Chavez? Then he apologized and he said it wasn't right to call for an assassination of a political figure? Well yeah, that lasted. "We have begun to see the kind of person he is," Robertson said on air yesterday: "And more and more people are saying to me, 'I think you were right.' "

But our winner, Coultergeist. Did it again. Tried to link Senator Barack Obama to terrorism or Iraq or something. "I do think anyone named B. Hussein Obama should avoid using 'hijack' and 'religion' in the same sentence." You know, she was on Hardball tonight. We put her on a seven-second delay, which is just a drop in the bucket, actually, because politically she is already on this seven-century delay. Coultergeist, today's "Worst Person in the World."

How about worst "person" is MSNBC and Fox News and whoever else will let her on tv.  She is destroying intelligent debate in this country and should be ignored.

pearlene, I was at Townhall.com one day for laughs, reading a review of one of those Sean hannity Freedumb concerts.

The reviewer referred to Ann Coulter as "eye candy" in the first paragraph. I wasn't man enough to go any further.

HBL, I just don't get it. I mean that Michelle Malkin is at least an attractive woman, until she opens her mouth to speak but Annie. And what's with the "little black dress". Women wear black to appear smaller but this woman looks like a scarecrow in black. As my uncle used to say ‘even Spike don’t want no bones” and Spike was his dog.

I strongly disagree. ann is what is in the diaper of Rosemary's baby and that baby has been on a diet of milk of magnesia. I am writting a book about ann coulter. It all starts at the waste treatment plant. What a way to make money. If it were not for right wing lunatics what would we post about?

Coulter was kidding around, liberals have no sense of humor.

It's for this reason that I think Coulter should get all the air time she can inhale.  It's clear that a good portion of conservatives think this woman speaks worthy words.  So while some have found ways of tempering their speech to make their ugly ideas palatable and hide their hate, Ann draws that segment out into the open.

It's not that Ann thinks this crap, or that she gets airtime.  It's that there's a small-minded segment of the population that actually agrees with her.

I saw this hag's appearance on Hardball, and just wanted to throw up. How much did she have to pay those mindless sycophants?

The drivel oozing from this creature's mouth borders on abject stupidity. In essence, she was advocating total war against the Arab world.

Yeah, I know, Taz... she was just "kidding".

Attn: Chris Matthews, Meredith Vieira and the producers of Hardball and the Today Show.Greetings,I am a loyal viewer of NBC Nightly News, the Today Show and MSNBC throughout the rest of the day.  I have to write today to convey my disappointment with the producers and Chris Matthews who continue to give Ann Coulter a platform from which to spew her hate filled venom. For three days leading up to her appearance on Hardball on June 26, 2007, MSNBC promoted Ms. Coulter's interview.  You got what you wanted-fireworks.  I was frankly very uncomfortable seeing Ms. Coulter cave when confronted by Elizabeth Edwards. Clearly, when the pressure is on, Ann Coulter fails to actually make an argument, but rather goes off on some tangent having to do with fundraising and the timing of her own attacks.  What is that?  Why would you not challenge her?  Ann Coulter has leveled personal attack after personal attack towards the Edward's family.  I don't hate Ann Coulter.  I see her for what she is: a vile, unconscionable liar; and I expect nothing less from her.  That's why I don't buy her books or watch Fox News.  Adding insult to injury, I was shocked to turn on the Today Show and see a segment reporting your "fireworks" - surprisingly, as if it were news.  Is that not the same as striking a match, tossing it into a tub of gasoline, and then innocently reporting that "there was a fire"?  I am further confounded by Chris Matthews dark sad face this morning, looking as if he had just had to tell someone they had cancer. A bit disingenuous after touting her appearance for days leading up to her interview, and heaping admiration and praise on her as a guest, I think.  He went on to say that she was a "brilliant provocateur" and had a "great mind".  I take issue with both of these assertions.  Hurling personal insults may be over the top and enhance your ratings, but it sure does not constitute brilliance-or anything like it. I actually had classmates that were very good at personal destruction-in the 8th grade!  If Ms Coulter has a "great mind", she has opted to waste it concocting ugly innuendo and inflaming political discourse for her own personal enrichment.  Selling books, even many of them, does not make anyone great or brilliant. Larry Flynn and Adolf Hitler have moved similar amounts of paper.  Having an FCC license does make you accountable for the type of content you offer the American people. Further, if it means anything at all, NBC has a reputation to consider.  They do in my mind, anyway.Having Ann Coulter on NBC, MSNBC or any other venue over which you have programming control is completely beneath you and while temporarily boosting your ratings, will serve only to weaken our country and put a stain on your image.P.S.  Chris, I don't know if you wife has asked you, but she should: stop flirting like a horny teenager on national television.

I didn't watch the exchange but heard it through a coworker. I believe Mrs.Edwards(wife of John Edwards duh...) called in or something and asked for Ann to stop smearing her husband. She responded the same way she always does to critisism with sarcasm and arrogance. Honestly I don't see any reason why we should shut her up. She does more to help the progressive cause, as every stupid thing she says reflects badly upon the people she supposedly represents. She is a horrible person, but has every right to say whatever she wants, and if the media find what she says important so be it. I get my news from the web anyways.
